May 6 August 6 ) was one of the great mathematicians of the 20th century , a founding member of the influential Bourbaki group . He was a brother of the philosopher Simone Weil Born in Paris , he studied in Paris, Rome and Göttingen and received his doctorate in . A conscientious objector and Jew, Weil fled France for Finland when World War II broke out. A famous anecdote was confirmed in his autobiography : after having been arrested under suspicion of espionage in Finland, he was saved from being shot only by the intervention of Rolf Nevanlinna After the war, Weil went to the United States where he taught at the University of Chicago before settling at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University He made substantial contributions in many areas, the most important being profound connections between algebraic geometry and number theory . Among his accomplishments were the so-called Weil conjectures (later proved by Bernard Dwork, Alexander Grothendieck and Pierre Deligne), the

Andre Weil, the famous mathematician who died in 1998 at age 92, thought of taking up philosophy. Doing well on an exam without having done the required reading changed his mind. He decided that a field in which "one could do so well while barely knowing what one was talking about was hardly worthy of respect." (Martin Weil, Washington Post, Aug. 12, 1998). Harold Orlans has conducted many studies of higher education and research policy for private and government bodies in Washington, DC.

Andre Weil, mathematician, died on August 6 aged 92. He was born on May 6, 1906. One of the most respected mathematicians of the second half of this century, Andre Weil is best known for two things: his fundamental discoveries in number theory, and his membership of the secretive group known as Bourbaki, which redefined the foundations of modern pure mathematics. He held a professorship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, where his colleagues included Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, John von Neumann and Kurt Godel. His sister Simone, the renowned mystic and philosopher, active in the French Resistance, died in 1943. Andre Weil was born in Paris. His father Bernard was a physician; his mother Selma came from a community of Austrian Jews in the Russian port of Rostov-on-Don. By the age of ten he was "passionately addicted" to mathematics, as he says in his autobiography The Apprenticeship of a Mathematician. His other passions were languages in 1922, aged 16, he read the Bhagavad Gita in the original Sanskrit and travel. After graduating from the Ecole Normale in Paris he went walking in the French Alps, always taking with him a notebook of mathematical calculations. He was especially fascinated by "Diophantine equations" named after the Greek Diophantus, who flourished around AD 250 where the name of the game is to find whole numbers that satisfy some stated algebraic relation. (For example: find three whole numbers whose sum is a square and whose sums in pairs are also squares. Diophantus's answer: 41, 80, and 320.)

Dear David,

Has anyone translated into English any of the letters Andre Weil sent
from Rouen to his sister Simone in 1940, describing his mathematics?
Two such letters (one quoted in its entirety and one excerpted) appear
in the original French in Weil's Collected Papers (volume I, pages 244-255).
My French is not so fluent, so before I dive in with dictionary in hand
I thought I'd ask whether anyone knows of an existing English translation.
I tried using Altavista to see if perchance the text exists on-line in
either French or English; amusingly, the search for "Weil Rouen 1940"
turned up the home-page of an artist named Mandeville who was born in
Rouen, had his first shows during the period 1939-1941, and whose first post-World War II exhibition was held in 1958 at the "Galerie Andre Weil" in Paris.

Saddam Hussein blieb in US-Gnaden.

    Summary:
Dr Jacques Cabaud is Simone Weil's first biographer. His book, "Simone Weil: A Fellowship in Love," is published by Harvill Press London, 1964. This is a transcript of the full interview with Jacques Cabaud speaking to Lyn Gallacher from his home in Germany.
    Presenter: Lyn Gallacher
    Details or Transcript:
How did you first come across Simone Weil?
In 1950, I was in Paris on a scholarship to work on a thesis, the title of which was "Pascal the Mystic". That's when I fell upon a newspaper review of Simone Weil's second posthumous book: "Waiting on God". The quotations in this article were so striking, and of such exceptional literary quality, and the authenticity of the mystical experience so obvious, I fell under the spell immediately. "Pascal can wait", I thought," this is genuine, this is great furthermore, this is new, untouched territory. Forget secondary literature. I'll be the first! I'll write her biography." This was seven years after her death.. Somebody had to interview the witnesses of her life, very few of whom had died, as she had, during the war years. Luckily, her parents had carefully stored her manuscript writings which were plentiful.
You mean her parents were aware their daughter was a genius?
