Rheinische Post (Mönchengladbacher Stadtpost) vom 02.02.02 BILD FOLGT Ein etwas anderer Tag in Katalonien Formel-Eins-Pilot Nick Heidfeld (Bildmitte) Reise zu den Sauber-Testfahrten des 1.Offziellen eingerahmt von seinen Fans. Nick-Heidfeld.

Bhagavad Gita in the original Sanskrit. Hadamard Hadamard wanted his brilliant student to aim higher and try to prove the Mordell Conjecture. Weil chose not to follow his supervisor's advice. He wrote later:- My decision was a wise one: it was to take more than half a century to prove Mordell 's Conjecture. He received his D.Sc. from Paris in 1928. He then taught at different universities, for example the Aligarh Muslim University in India from 1930 to 1932. He had first discussed with Syed Masood, the Minister of Education for Hyderabad, obtaining an appointment to a chair in French Civilization at Aligarh University but, despite the promise, he received a telegram from Syed Masood:- Impossible to create chair of French civilisation. Mathematics chair open. He also worked at the University of Strasbourg, France, from 1933 until the outbreak of World War II. It was here that he became involved with the famous group of mathematicians writing under the name Nicolas Bourbaki. We give more details of this collaboration below.

Andre Weil by Steven E. Landsburg
But the glories of the Institute were not only in its past. Then as now, the permanent members of the Institute included a substantial fraction of the finest mathematical minds on earth. In that atmosphere suffused with intellectual ferment, it was intoxicating just to breathe.
The constant proximity to greatness left many young visitors-myself included-perpetually in a state that combined awe, exhilaration, and terror. In the rare moments when we weren't talking about mathematics, we used to talk about these feelings quite freely. I remember one of my colleagues saying the great men were father figures, and he felt tremendous anxiety about making a mistake in front of his father. He was, I thought, close to the mark but not right on target. We didn't think of the permanent members as fathers; we thought of them as gods.
Of all my heady moments in that enchanted time and place, one is most vivid in my memory. I had arrived early for a lecture, and found the room empty except for a gaunt, wizened old man hunched quietly in the front row. I took a seat a few rows behind him; he briefly turned around; we nodded greetings as strangers do. Then we both returned to silence, waiting for the speaker and the rest of the audience to arrive. To pass the time, my companion reached into the inside pocket of his rumpled sports jacket and extracted the morning's mail. I snuck a peek over his shoulder. The envelopes were addressed to "Dr. Andre Weil''.

37. Andre Weil's Law Of Academic Hiring
André weil s Law of Academic Hiring. Hetold a fellow mathematician, Paul Halmos, about it and Halmos included weil slaw in his autobiography.
http://www.ualr.edu/~epmoore/weilslaw.html
"But what do you do when a department [in a university] goes bad? André Weil suggested that there is a logarithmic law at work: first-rate people attract other first-rate people, but second-rate people tend to hire third-raters, and third-rate people hire fifth-raters. If a dean or a president is genuinely interested in building and maintaining a high-quality university (and some of them are), then he must not grant complete self-determination to a second-rate department; he must, instead, use his administrative powers to intervene and set things right. That's one of the proper functions of deans and presidents, and pity the poor university in which a large proportion of both the faculty and the administration are second-raters; it is doomed to diverge to minus infinity." (p. 123)

Bourbaki , N. Nicolas Bourbaki , Faits et legendes. Paris (1997). 172p. Orig. wrs. *Nicolas Bourbaki is the collective pseudonym of an influential group of mathematicians, almost all French, who since the late 1930's have been engaged in writing what is intended to be a definitive survey of all of mathematics, or at least of all those parts of the subject which Bourbaki considers worthy of the name. The work appears in installment that are usually from 100 to 300 pages long. The first appeared in 1939 and the thirty-third in 1967; many intervening installments have been extensively revised and reissued. The selection of topics is very diffrent from that in a traditional introduction to mathematics. In Bourbaki 's arrangement, mathematic begins with set theory, which is followed, in order, by (abstract) algebra, general topology, functions of a real variable (including ordinary calculus), topological vector spaces, and the general theory of integration. To some extent the order is forced by the logical dependence of each topic on its predecessors.

This award-winning globe could help children become A+ geography students. The Explorer Globe II is jam-packed with hundreds of facts, trivia, and useful scholastic information about every aspect of the geographical world. It electronically verbalizes everything from area population, capitol city/country, state/province, large bodies of water, currencies, high points, distance, and more. Other remarkable features make the Explorer an even more useful reference tool. It has a world clock that, once set from your home area, will tell the time in every other part of the world. And any country can be selected to hear a sample its national music (yes, Tahiti does have a national anthem). The globe sits on a sturdy base, which features a dashboard full of interactive functions and an attached soft-tipped stylus. This stylus is the key instrument: use it to touch virtually any point on the surface of the globe to retrieve information. Diane Beall
