Weierstrass, Karl (18151897) Weierstrass attend the University of Bonn to learn public administration, but he found that his passion was for mathematics. He read Laplace Legendre Jacobi , and Abel. He taught for 14 years at the secondary school level before he published 2 brilliant papers and received an offer to teach at the university level. He became a professor of mathematics at the University of Berlin. In his work to put mathematical analysis on a sound logical foundation, Weierstrass developed the modern definitions of limit (delta-epsilon) and continuity. In his Berlin lectures in the 1860s, he also proved several theorems for continuous and complex functions. In the first half of the nineteenth century, most mathematicians believed and many texts “proved” that continuous functions were differentiable Their idea of function was limited to functions defined by algebraic formulas. Weierstrass found counter-examples and opened a whole new thinking about properties of functions. The standards of rigor that he set greatly affected the future of mathematics. Because of severe illness, Weierstrass had an advanced student write on the chalkboard while he lectured.

When traveling, he kept his unfinished papers and working notes in a large white wooden box. The box was lost while Weierstraß was on a trip in 1880 and never rediscovered. He is quoted as saying, "It is true that a mathematician who is not also something of a poet will never be a perfect mathematician."

Karl Weierstrass 's father, Wilhelm Weierstrass, was secretary to the mayor of Ostenfelde at the time of Karl's birth. Wilhelm Weierstrass was a well educated man who had a broad knowledge of the arts and of the sciences. He certainly was well capable of attaining higher positions than he did, and this attitude may have been one of the reasons that Karl Weierstrass's early career was in posts well below his outstanding ability. Weierstrass's mother was Theodora Vonderforst and Karl was the eldest of Theodora and Wilhelm's four children, none of whom married. Wilhelm Weierstrass became a tax inspector when Karl was eight years old. This job involved him in only spending short periods in any one place so Karl frequently moved from school to school as the family moved around Prussia. In 1827 Karl's mother Theodora died and one year later his father Wilhelm remarried. By 1829 Wilhelm Weierstrass had become an assistant at the main tax office in Paderborn, and Karl entered the Catholic Gymnasium there. Weierstrass excelled at the Gymnasium despite having to take on a part-time job as a bookkeeper to help out the family finances.

Weierstrass, Karl Theodor Wilhelm German mathematician who deepened and broadened the understanding of functions. He demonstrated in 1871 that there exist continuous functions in an interval which have derivatives nowhere in the interval.
Weierstrass was born in Ostenfelde, Westphalia, and trained as a teacher. From 1856 he was professor at the Royal Polytechnic School in Berlin as well as the university.
Weierstrasse's breakthrough came with a paper 1854 that solved the inversion of hyperelliptic integrals. He did much to clarify basic concepts such as 'function', 'derivative', and 'maximum'. His development of the modern theory of functions was described in his Abhandlungen aus der Funktionlehre 1886, a text derived chiefly from his students' lecture notes. In the 1890s Weierstrass planned the publication of his life's work, again to be compiled from lecture notes. Two volumes were published before his death and five more appeared during the next three decades.

Weierstrass, Karl (Theodor Wilhelm)
(b. Oct. 31, 1815, Ostenfelde, Bavaria [Germany]d. Feb. 19, 1897, Berlin), German mathematician, one of the founders of the modern theory of functions. In 1841 Weierstrass obtained his teacher's certificate and began a 14-year career as a teacher of mathematics at the Pro-Gymnasium in Deutsche Krone (1842-48) and at the Collegium Hoseanum in Braunsberg (1848-56). During this time of isolation from other mathematicianshis salary was so small that he could not even correspond with his fellowsWeierstrass worked unceasingly on analysis. He conceived and in large part carried out a program known as the arithmetization of analysis, under which analysis is based on a rigorous development of the real number system. His preoccupation with rigour in mathematics is illustrated by his later development (1861) of a function that, though continuous, had no derivatives at any point. This idiosyncrasy of an apparently differentiable function caused consternation among the school of analysts who depended heavily upon intuition. Weierstrass' work on the theory of functions was guided by his desire to complete the work begun by Niels Abel of Norway and Karl Jacobi of Germany, primarily Abel's theorem that the number of independent integrals of algebraic functions is finite and Jacobi's discovery of multiple periodic functions of many variables.
