Edward Waring 's father, John Waring, was a farmer. Several generations of his family lived at Mytton in Shropshire. John Waring married Elizabeth and their son Edward was educated at Shrewsbury school. Waring entered Magdalene College, Cambridge on 24 March 1753. He won a Milbridge scholarship and he was admitted as a sizar, meaning that he paid a reduced fee but essentially worked as a servant to make good the fee reduction. He immediately impressed his teachers with his mathematical ability and he graduated B.A. in 1757 as senior wrangler. On 24 April 1754 Waring was elected a fellow of Magdalene College. Waring's most famous work was Meditationes Algebraicae which he worked on during the next few years. He submitted the first chapter of this work to the Royal Society but following this nothing happened for two years. When Waring was nominated for the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge in 1759, the work was distributed as

Waring practised medicine in various London hospitals, then Cambridge hospital and Huntington hospital. From 1760 he was Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge although he did not give up practising medicine until 1770. The Cauchy ratio test was first discovered by Waring. His Miscellane analytica... in 1762 looks at analysis as does a work in 1776. In the 1762 work he proves that all rational symmetric functions of the roots of an equation can be expressed as rational functions of the coefficients. In 1770 he published a work on algebra Meditationes algebraicae . In this he derives another method for expressing symmetric polynomials and he investigates the cyclotomic equation x - 1 = 0. Distinguished American man of letters; a leading authority on the history of the Negro in this country and in Africa; most influential exponent in our generation of Negro rights. . . . A man of independence, large intellectual ability, great moral courage, and public spirit, he has mellowed with the years, and now, after the battles of a lifetime in behalf of justice for his race, he deserves well of the Republic and the world. -Anson Phelps Stokes W.E.B. Du Bois was a respected sociologist and historian, but he exerted his greatest influence as a strategist in the early civil rights movement. In 1905, rejecting those who claimed that full equality for African Americans must come gradually, Du Bois became a founder of the Niagara Movement, which called for an end to racial discrimination immediately. Four years later, he was helping to found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and for many years served as editor of its magazine, The Crisis. Increasingly skeptical of his country's ability to crush racism, and accused of disloyalty during the McCarthy era as a result of his Communist sympathies, Du Bois was thoroughly alienated from America by the mid-1950s. In 1962 he expatriated himself to Ghana in the hope of reviving there þan ancient African Communismþ based on black spiritual unity.

WARING, EDWARD (1734 - 1798). Meditationes Algebraicae . Cambridge: 1782. Waring did not give up his day job as a physician until 1770; in fact, he practiced medicine at several locations including Addenbrooke hospital, which may be familiar to some visitors to Cambridge, England. He discovered Cauchy's ratio test. It is stated in Waring's Meditationes Algebraicae that every integer is a sum of not more than 9 cubes, a sum of not more than 19 biquadrates and so forth. Hilbert proved the general assertion in 1909. NOTE: This book is famous because it asked a problem that wasn't solved for more than 199 years. Hilbert's 1909 paper refers to pages 349-350 (3d ed.) Cambridge 1782 of Waring's work. The Rate Book and Special Collections Library has both the 1782 edition (on exhibit) and an earlier edition.

First edition of Waring's second major publication on number theory, and containing the announcement of 'Waring's problem', the theorem, without proof, that 'every integer is either a cube or the sum of at most nine cubes; also every integer is either a fourth power or the sum of at most 19 fourth powers. He conjectured also that every positive integer can be expressed as the sum of at most r kth powers, the r depending on the k' (Kline, Mathematical thought, p. 609). This famous problem was tackled by Hilbert and others, but it was not until 1919 and 1928 that Hardy and Littlewood came up with a nearly complete solution, which was further developed by Weyl and Vinogradov (resulting in the Vinogradov Theorem). However, a comprehensive proof has still eluded mathematicians.
For a detailed history of the Waring theorem see Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mathematics (second edition), vol. I, 4E pp. 14-15.
