BOOK REVIEWS Paul - A Novel by Walter Wangerin
This is a passionate and scholarly evocation of a great holy man.
St. Paul is not a saint who immediately endears himself to women but the more his work is studied the more interesting he becomes as a person. I bought the book to see how the writer had managed to conjure up a three-dimensional man from the available material. Walter Wangerin has succeeded brilliantly, interweaving the stories from The Acts and the content of the Epistles with the historical background of the period. Paul leaps from the pages as a passionate, infuriating but loveable advocate of Christianity and as I progressed through the pages my heart sank when I realised I was more than half-way through the book. Having reached the end all I want to do now is to go back to the New Testament and re-read Paul's writings and the Acts of the Apostles. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Only a few chapters of this book, which capture the reader's attention from the first page, are not enough to produce a complete review of the book. Enough to say that the incomparable talents of J. K. Rowling are as brilliant as ever. Apart from the three-dimensional characters she has created, her talent as a wordsmith to evoke mental pictures in the reader is outstanding, and he or she enters the colourful and credible world of Harry Potter with an immediacy which satisfies absolutely. This has to be the main reason why 5,000,000 advance copies were ordered, and that there is serious competition between members of a family, adults as well as children, about who gets to read it first! The reviewer will now rush back to her copy.......

Churches open 24 hours a day thanks to the Internet
"Being online lets you move forward in an era of increasing speed. But it also lets you go back a generation to a time when the church doors were never locked, and you could just walk in 24 hours a day." Rev. Daniel Schumm St. Michael Lutheran Church Hebron, Indiana

HEBRON - Albert Einstein said in 1941, "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." It was yet another volley in the gunfire between the "world of fact" and the "world of faith," intended not to cripple one faction, but bring the both together in an alliance. Were Einstein alive today, he would applaud the latest pact between the pairreligion on the Internet.

    Essays
    A Good Name
    Joey Earl Horstman
What's in a name? In this essay, Joey Earl Horstman offers theological insights into the creative act of naming in the world, as well as providing a personal history of the Horstman clan. Naming is serious business, indeed. Artists in the Way
    Finding Truth in Dangerous Places
    David B. Hutchens
Where art is concerned, is there any such thing as objective truth apart from the individual outworking of that truth? This essay examines the roles of self-consciousness and Christ-consciousness in the inventive process, revealing that perhaps the artist should never "get out of the way." The Trouble with Church Art
    Jeanne Schinto
The tendency toward ritual is strong in many children. Stone altars, vestments, and other trappings of faith are made, all to the end of instilling and maintaining a certain childlike awe. In this reminiscence, Jeanne Schinto recounts some of her own steps in the replacement of "kiddy faith" with something more substantial.
    Studies
Friends Have All Things in Common
Erasmus' Utopian Dreams of a Better World
    Liam Atchison
Plato, Augustine, Thomas More, and Erasmus were among many in the history of philosophy who dreamed of a perfect world. In this penetrating study of the thoughts of Erasmus, Utopia would consist of a place where a pure New Testament religion would reign supreme, and human beings would spend their days in friendship, community, and sharing.

    Berwald
Ludwig Berwald (1883-1942). Born in Prague. Studied mathematics in Munich and became a full professor at the German Charles University in Prague. His scientific work is mainly in differential geometry, notably on Finsler geometry and on spray geometry, i.e. , path spaces. He died in Poland after having been deported by the German authorities just because he was Jewish.
    Bortolotti
Enea Bortolotti (1896-1934). Born in Rome. After a break during the First World War, he received his Ph.D. in 1920 at Pisa; he was particularly influenced by L. Bianchi. After teaching at the medical school, he became professor of geometry at the Univerity of Cagliari in 1928. From there he moved on to the same position at the University of Florence in 1934. Despite his premature death, Bortolotti published about a hundred papers, notably in differential geometry.
    Cartan
Elie Joseph Cartan (1869-1951). Born in Dolomien near Chamb©ry, France. Student at l‘‰cole Normale since 1888, he received his Ph.D. in 1894 with a thesis in which he completed Killing’s classification of semisimple algebras. He lectured at Montpellier (1894-1903), Lyon (1896-1903), Nancy (1903-1909), and Paris (1909-1940). His following work on the representation of semisimple Lie groups combines group theory, classical geometry, differential geometry, and topology. From 1904 he worked on differential equations and differential geometry, and developed a theory of moving frames (calculus of differential forms). He also contributed to the geometry of symmetric spaces and published on general relativity and its geometric extensions as well as on the theory of spinors. For his Collected Works, cf.
