William Wallace 'This is the truth I tell you: Never submit to live, my son, Scotichronicon For the English chroniclers he was an outlaw, a murderer, the perpetrator of atrocities and a traitor. How did an obscure Scot obtain such notoriety? Who was William Wallace? Wallace was the younger son of a Scottish knight and minor landowner. His name, Wallace or le Waleis, means the Welshman, and he was probably descended from Richard Wallace who had followed the Stewart family to Scotland in the 12th century. William Wallace
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Sir William Wallace (c. ) was a Scottish patriot who led his country against the English Norman ) occupation of Scotland and King Edward I of England as part of the Wars of Scottish Independence Wallace is often seen as being 'one of the common people' in comparison to his fellow countryman, Robert de Bruce ( Robert I of Scotland ), who was of noble stock. Wallace's family was descended from Richard Wallace (Richard the Welshman), a landowner under an early member of the Stewart family, which was later to become a royal line in its own right. Wallace was born at Ellerslie near Kilmarnock Ayrshire around 1270, meaning he was still a young man in his most famous years between and There are few contemporary sources for information about Wallace's early life, and much reliance is placed on the account of Blind Harry , written around , roughly two centuries after Wallace's birth. We are told that he was born in Ayrshire , his father was Sir Malcolm Wallace of Riccarton, and that he had two brothers, Malcolm and John. He was educated by two uncles who were priests, and was therefore well educated by the standards of the time, knowing both

INTRODUCTION TO THE WILLIAM LUXON WALLACE COLLECTION In May 1978 Mrs. Velma Wallace, wife of William Luxon Wallace, donated the Wallace family collection of records to Eastern Kentucky University. The records were scattered throughout the Wallace family house in Lexington. A small portion of the papers found in the basement and attic along with some World War I correspondence and reports Wallace kept in an old steamer trunk required fumigation and extensive cleaning. Since the bulk of the Wallace collection had no organization, the Archives staff imposed its own pattern of arrangement. The inventory to the collection describes material at the folder title level. In addition, a correspondent name index lists letters of content Wallace received from prominent persons. According to provisions of the Donor Gift Agreement the entire collection is open to research. Through correspondence, diaries, speeches, photographs, newsclippings, and other primary source materials the public career and personal life of Wallace and his family is documented. Glimpses of late nineteenth century Richmond social and political life can be found in the correspondence of Wallace's father, Coleman Covington. In addition, due to Wallace's significance as an organizer in the Kentucky Republican Party, the collection sheds some light on the party's history during the first half of the twentieth century. The collection also contains political memorabilia which Wallace assembled along with' a. quantity of materials that documents his World War I experience.

THE BATTLE had been waging for some months before it caught our attention. Intriguing little questions, such as "What happened to the baby?", had appeared in newsgroups, each setting off another skirmish between the fantasists and the historians, between those who believed its director could do no wrong, and those who judged "Braveheart" a farrago of nonsense. The "baby" was the child supposedly fathered by William Wallace on the wife of the heir to the English throne, the child that would become King Edward III, and for many this risible invention became the symbol of Mel Gibson's masquerade. A few tried to take a balanced view. One wrote: "Okay, so it's not true to history, but it was fantastic." He was then immediately challenged by: "Actually it is part true history, actually most of it IS true!" ... which in turn provoked the following fairly comprehensive reply. A PA news report last year included this sentence:- "Gibson said the film would be authentic but he had to make compromises for story telling purposes."

    William A. A.
    "Bigfoot" Wallace (1817-1899)
In a land and at a time known for its tough and colorful characters, William A. "Bigfoot" Wallace felt right at home. During his sixty years in Texas, he set the standards as a ranger, backwoodsman and folk hero. Born in Lexington, VA on April 3, 1817, Wallace grew up and worked on his father's fruit orchard. But after his older brother and a cousin died in the Goliad Massacre in the spring of 1836, William decided to join the Texas Revolution to avenge the deaths. He would have to wait, however, for by the time he arrived, the Texan's war for independence had already been won. Wallace first settled near LaGrange. In 1840, after Wallace had been in Texas for over two years, he decided to help in the layout and construction of the new capital at Austin. While there, it is said, he was once misidentified as an Indian, named Bigfoot, that had ransacked a neighboring settler's home. After finding that Wallace's foot was actually smaller than the 14-inch imprint of the Indian, he was found innocent of the misdeed. As a result of the episode, however, Wallace acquired the nickname of Bigfoot, and the name stuck. Bigfoot participated in a number of the early Texas conflicts. He fought in the Battle of Plum Creek in 1840, and against Mexican General Adrian Woll's invasion of Texas in 1842. Later that year, he volunteered for the retailatory Somervell Raid across the Rio Grande River, and subsequently joined the Mier Expedition organized to penetrate further into Mexico. Wallace survived the Black Bean executions that followed the capture of the Mier participants, and was imprisoned at Perote Prison east of Mexico City. After his release, he joined other Texans in the Mexican-American War. In the 1850s, he commanded a company of Texas Rangers fighting border bandits and Indians on the frontier.
