70. Falkirk
Another description of the battle, and the betrayal of william wallace.
http://www.nwlink.com/~scotlass/falkirk.htm
The assemblage presented a formidable force for Wallace to deal with. Some say that Edward had as many as 80-90,000 men. By July of the year the English were advancing up the coast with a fleet of ships for support. Supplies were hard to come by, especially with the size of the army, they were near starvation, and Wallace and his force seemed to have disappeared. Because of the size of the English force, Wallace continued to fall back, destroying behind him what could be of use to the English. The logistics of feeding an army of that size was becoming a real problem for Edward and he was thinking of abandoning the march when he received vital intelligence that Wallace and his men were but 15 miles distant in Callander Wood. Since Wallace had his intelligence also, he must also have known of the English forces assembled. Both sides waited out the night, knowing that the morning would bring another battle for subjugation or freedom. Edward was assisted by an act of treachery. Many of the Scots nobles held lands in both England and in Scotland and their loyalties lay not with their country as much as with the protection of their possessions and lands. Two of the Scots barons, the Earl of Angus and the Earl of Dunbar rode over to the English side and informed Edward that Wallace was preparing to strike at night, thus having an advantage in surprise. Wallace realized that with his two barons missing, he had been betrayed and since the element of surprise of a night battle was gone, decided to wait until morning to begin the battle.

An early ambrotype of Willie (Chicago Historical Society Photograph)
William Wallace Lincoln ("Willie") was born on December 21, 1850. He was the third son of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln. Willie was named after Dr. William Wallace who had married Frances, one of Mary Todd's sisters. Willie was more like his dad than older brother Robert; he had the same magnetic personality of Abraham Lincoln. A 16 year old girl, Julia Taft, described Willie as "the most lovable boy I ever knew, bright, sensible, sweet-tempered and gentle-mannered."
In Springfield Willie attended a private school operated by Miss Corcoran. Like his folks, Willie loved learning. Willie developed lots of interests including writing poetry and drawing up railroad timetables. He had excellent natural ability in math. Additionally, Mary Todd said Willie was "a most peculiarly religious child." He was more studious than his younger brother, Tad.
In June of 1859 Willie went to Chicago with his father who had legal business in that city. Father and son stayed in the Tremont House. Willie wrote a letter to his friend, Henry Remann, about his wonderful experience. (The photographs of Willie are from the Chicago Historical Society).

73. Scotland's Hero William Wallace
Scottish hero william wallace was a man born to be a leader. Scotland s Hero, william wallace. A man of whom the facts are truthfully few.
http://scotlandvacations.com/wallace.htm
Scotland's Hero,William Wallace A man of whom the facts are truthfully few. A man of low status or minor status and called by some an outlaw or bandit, it may have been that Wallace was being used by more powerful Scots aristocrats as a cover for their rebellion so they could be seen not to break their feudal vows of homage to Edward. A contemporary chronicler writing in the monastery of Lanercost in Cumberland, has this to say:
"Robert Wishart, bishop of Glasgow, ever foremost in treason conspired with the Steward of the Kingdom, named James, for a new piece of insolence, yea, for a new chapter of ruin. Not daring openly to break their pledge to the king, they caused a certain bloody man, William Wallace, who had formerly been a chief of brigands in Scotland, to revolt against the king and assemble the people in his support." William Wallace was a man born to be a leader. Of the little known facts we have of Wallace, the one that comes across the clearest is that he inspired and led his men with efficiency, sometimes barbarously, in a guerrilla war against the English fueled by his passion for vengeance and his love for Scotland. When we read the story of William Wallace, imagination wanders back to the times of heroic antiquity, and enthusiasm can scarcely keep pace with reason in forming an estimate of his services to his country.
Unfortunately there is little information that has come down to us from the period when he was alive. There is no doubt that he struck fear into the hearts of the English.
