Scotland, Late 1200s
"In the month of May (1297) the perfidious race of Scots began to rebel." So says a contemporary English monastic chronicler, Walter of Hemingborough. And so begins our story of William Wallace, brilliantly played by Mel Gibson in the Academy Award-winning movie, " Braveheart ." It was a difficult time for the people of Scotland. Edward I (commonly called "Longshanks") was, at 35 years, crowned king of England at Westminster Abbey . This tall, powerful military genius had subjected Wales after fierce fighting. Edward's castles were everywhere. The Welsh were now in Edward's hands, and those hands were beginning to tighten around Scotland's throat. Always asserting they were a free and independent people, the Scots had been crushed by Edward's military might in 1296. The Scottish "king" (John Balliol) had surrendered to the English. The Scots were outraged. They believed Longshanks (here, from the Wriothesley Manuscript, with Llewelyn of Wales on the right and Alexander of Scotland on the left before Wales and Scotland were conquered) would treat them as he was

Tales of Sir William Wallace
This book by Tom Scott is adapted from The Wallas of Blin Hary. The minstrel, Blind Harry was blind from birth, and in those days (15th Century), the Church taught the blind to memorise and recite poems and tales as the means for earning a living. It is possible, but unlikely, that he composed the poems himself, but the text of the original prose if it ever existed in document form, is lost. Harry said in one of his poems that it was derived from a Latin original which someone translated for him.
We do have written versions of Blind Harry's work. Here is a bit:
"We rede of ane rycht famouss of renowne,
Of worthi blude that ryngis in this regioune,
And hensfurth I will my process hald,
Of Wilyham Wallas yhe haf hard beyne tald"
Published in 1981 by Gordon Wright Publishing, 55 Marchmont Road, Edinburgh EH9 1HT, Scotland.
William Wallace by Andrew Fisher
This biography by Andrew Fisher is excellent for the history buff. It has an exhaustive list of references and investigates all aspects of his life and character. As a result, it provides a more authentic portrait of the great hero than many previous biographies.

Lewis Collins, 1 History of Kentucky [William Ross Wallace] Son of Rev. Matthew G. Wallace, a Presbyterian preacher, was a native of Kentucky, born at Lexington in 1819; well educated; read law, and began its practice with good prospects; but was persuaded, by literary friends, to abandon it, and settle in New York city, in the profession of authorship. He published three volumes of poems in 1848, 1851, 1856, and was preparing a fourth in 1860. Wm. Cullen Bryant , the poet-editor, awarded him high praise when he said "his poems are marked by a splendor of imagination and an affluence of poetic diction which show him the born poet." Mr. Wallace has been a regular contributor to some of the leading New York magazines and literary newspapers. The National Cyclopaedia of American Biography W.H. Venable notes that "one can understand, when reading his vigorous and well-wrought verses, why his contemporaries praised him, and we wonder, as in many other similar cases, why compositions so much above mediocrity should be forgotten so soon."

Sir William Wallace (1270-1305)
William Wallace, born near Pasiley, Renfrewshire, was hanged, disemboweled, beheaded and quartered in 1305. He thus suffered the same fate as Welsh leader Dafydd ap Gruffudd some 22 years before and for the same reasons: both had dared the might of the English crown; both had dared to raise armies against Edward I and both had fought for the independence of their nations. In order to understand Wallace's significance in his country's history, we have to look at the situation in Scotland that led to his arrival as leader of his people in the vacuum that Robert the Bruce was not ready to fill until he was perfectly sure of success.
A new struggle for control of Scotland had begun at the death of Alexander III in 1286, leaving as heir his grandchild Margaret, the infant daughter of the King of Norway. English King Edward, with his eye on the complete subjugation of Scotland suggested that Margaret should marry his son, a desire consummated at a treaty signed and sealed at Birgham. Under the terms, Scotland was to remain a separate and independent kingdom, though Edward was to keep English garrisons in a number of Scottish castles. When the young princess died, all plans changed: the succession was now open to many claimants, the strongest of whom were John Balliol and Robert Bruce.
After the decision had gone in favor of Balliol, he declared himself King of Scotland and declared that he would answer only to his own people; refusing to supply military service to Edward, who had supported his election. Overestimating his strength, he then concluded a treaty with France prior to planning an invasion of England.

WALLACE, WILLIA M ALEXANDER ANDERSON (1817-1899). William Alexander Anderson (Bigfoot) Wallace, soldier and Texas Ranger, the son of Andrew and Jane Ann (Blair) Wallace, was born in Lexington, Virginia, on April 3, 1817. He was descended from Highlanders William Wallace and Robert Bruce, and the clan instinct was strong in him. In 1836, when he learned that a brother and a cousin had been shot down in the Goliad Massacre, qv he set out for Texas to "take pay out of the Mexicans." A good many years later he told John C. Duval qv that he believed the account had been squared. Wallace was a magnificent physical specimen. In his prime he stood six feet two inches "in his moccasins," and weighed 240 pounds without surplus fat. For a while he tried farming in the vicinity of La Grange, but the occupation was not to his taste. In the spring of 1840 he moved to Austin, saw the last buffalo of the region run down Congress Avenue, decided that people were getting too thick, and moved to San Antonio. He was with the Texans who fought Gen. Adrián Woll's qv invading Mexican army near San Antonio in 1842 and then volunteered for the Somervell and Mier expeditions.

WILLIAM WALLACE William Wallace William Wallace was born in January in 1272 in the Scotish city of Elerslie (near Glasgow), very few before his future great enemy, Edward I, of the Plantagenet house, took the thrown. William Wallace with your sword. He lived his first years in a climate of tensions and disputes that ocurred between the numerous Scotish nobels after King Alexander III´s death. Between his 14 and 16 years, he lived in Dunipace, with a clergyman who was his uncle, with who he studied the classics in latin. At this early age, he was already 2 metre tall, and he was considered almost as a giant according to the average of that times, he was also very strong, and he could speak three languages. His father´s death, his mother´s exile and the oppresive system with which his people were living because of English pressure made him to abandon the ecclesiastical career. Then, tired because of the English oppresion and authority, he united with other youths becoming a gang of foragides. He went with them to Loudun Hill, where the English knight Fennwick who had killed his father lived. They were formed just with 50 men, against the 200 English soldiers; but, even though, more than half of the English ones died, including Fennwick.
