A.Walker’s Guide: Land’s End to John o’Groats.
The impersonators have had their say. Now it's time for the real A.Walker to speak: So, you ant to walk the length of the country do you? Well if you think you can just do it next week, think again. The more time you have to plan your adventure of a lifetime, the better, and it will only add to the excitement. It's about 874 miles as the crow flies, and that would involve swimming (I walked 1086 miles). There are lots of things to bear in mind, so in no particular order, here goes. First Questions

First Questions
There are a few major questions that you need to answer before going too far:
  • Are you going South to North, or North to South? John o'Groats is probably a better place to finish, but things to bear in mind are: the prevailing wind (Southwesterly); the tourist season; the midge season; the grouse shooting season; Long Distance Trail books going South-North; leaving larger mountains in Scotland until your fitter, etc.
  • Will you go alone, or with someone else? Do you know anyone you could put up with for 24 hours a day, for 10 weeks, through thick and thin, or would you get lonely? What happens if one of you sprains an ankle after 200 miles?

66. Catalyst - Horse Ulcer
Story from the Australian ABC TV program Catalyst on the high incidence of gastric ulcers in racehorses and pinpoints lack of roughage as the main cause of this serious welfare problem. Veterinarians Dr Leanne Beggs and Dr john walker are interviewed.

Horse Ulcer
Thursday, 9 August 2001
Horse On the outside, Australia¹s racehorses are a picture of glowing health. On the inside, they're hiding deep, ugly pain. In 1999, researchers came to the shocking realisation that 90% of Australian racehorses are suffering from stomach ulcers. What's more, the ulcers are caused by the way horses are traditionally managed. Yet two years on, who knows about it? And are trainers doing anything to fix it? Dr Jonica Newby investigates this disturbing animal welfare issue. (full transcript...) Reporter: Jonica Newby
Producer: Paul Schneller
Researcher: Rob Hodgson

Full Program Transcript Narration: These are the elites of Australian racing. Yet despite the best care, the majority of racehorses are suffering a painful disease that would hospitalise a human. And until very recently, we didn’t have the faintest idea anything was wrong.
Jonica Newby: Four years ago, the 3-metre endoscope arrived in Australia. It was the first time, veterinarians had an endoscope long enough to pass all the way past the pharynx, down through the oesophagus, and let them peer deep into the horse’s stomach. And what they saw were holes.

http://www.lib.duke.edu/lilly/artlibry/dah/walkerj.htm
HName: Walker, John, III "Johnnie Walker" DateBorn: 1906 Placeborn: Pittsburgh, PA Datedied: 1995 Placedied: Amberley, West Sussex, United Kingdom summa cum laude Self-Portrait with Donors . Walker's many spectacular acquisitions included Rembrandt's Aristotle with the Bust of Homer , Fragonard's La Liseuse , El Greco's Laocoon , and the Ginevra de' Benci by Leonardo da Vinci bought in 1967 from the Prince of Liechtenstein. He made the selections from the Samuel Kress collection of Renaissance art bequest. Walker was also responsible for the planning of the gallery's east building expansion, designed by architect I M Pei and completed in 1978. In 1961, Walker took as his personal assistant the 25-year-old J. Carter Brown (q.v.), whose father, John Nicholas Brown, had been a fellow student with Walker's in Sachs' classes. Brown succeeded Walker in 1969 as Director and Walker assumed the title Director Emeritus. Walker and his wife settled in Sussex, in Amberley (near Arundel), England, and Fishers Island, New York, spending winters in Florida. In his retirement he authored monographs on James McNeill Whistler and John Constable. Walker was one of the few major museum directors with a strong career in art history (as opposed to politics, as his predecessor had, or development, as modern directors are drawn from). His writings on art drew the praise from Berenson, who was his principal mentor. Walker displayed Berenson's attitude that museums' successes lay in the quality of it collections as much as crowd pleasing. He took a conservative stance on cleaning of pictures, regarding aggressive cleaning as an act of vandalism. He was also forthright about his duty to curry favor for donations. ''In the United States,'' he wrote in his autobiography, ''it is axiomatic that the undertaker and the museum director arrive almost simultaneously.''

Getting Even with Dad (1994)
reviewed by
John Walker
My form of "rating": On the first viewing, I alternated between laughter and being pleasantly wired. (Nothing hyper, mind you, just a pleasant "What's gonna happen next!?" [Let it be noted that I get wired easily.]) On the second viewing, the humor predominated. (I almost became the most dreaded theater companionstarting to laugh *before* the joke!) The primary dilemma: This is one flick where reviewers don't have to give any opinions of their own. For many of you, I can simply list some data, and I'll convince you that this is a flick you'll probably like a lot or probably hate intensely. Datum: It co-stars *Macaulay Culkin*. Datum: It has echoes (not very strong) of the HOME ALONE sagas. There are other similar datums, too, but these two should be enough for now. You might already have heard the story, but here it is. Ray (Ted Danson) has planned the perfect heist: gold coins to be lifted with the aid of two partnersBobby (Saul Rubinek) and Carl (Gailard Sartain). True, their last escapade got them four years in Folsom, but at least Ray used the time wellto learn cake decorating, which he now does for a living in San Francisco. Unfortunately, the flaw in the ointment is that Ray's son Timmy (Culkin) has been dropped on him for a week. Ray's estranged wife died a few years ago, and Timmy has been living with Ray's sister Kitty. Well, she's getting married, and dumps Timmy for a week. Ray and company pull off the heist, and merely have to sit on the coins for a week while their fence gets cash. Regrettably, Timmy is on to them, purloins the coins, and holds them for blackmail: a week with Ray actually acting like a fathertaking him to a ball game, the aquarium, roller coasters, the works.

John Walker was captured after a bloody prison revolt
The story of 20-year-old John Walker Lindh, known as the "American Taleban", has shocked America. Captured by US forces in Afghanistan with a group of Taleban and al-Qaeda fighters who survived the bloody Mazar-e-Sharif revolt, Mr Walker now faces charges of conspiring to kill US nationals and aiding Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda network. The question being asked is: What led a "bright and quiet" middle-class child from California to fight against his fellow Americans in a far-off country? His parents believe he was brainwashed, and his friends say there were no signs that he planned to become a jihadi, or holy warrior, as he described himself to a Newsweek reporter. "This is a kid who would freeze from fear... totally not streetwise," his mother Marilyn Walker said. Changing Named after the former Beatle John Lennon, John Walker Lindh was born in Washington DC in February 1981.
