John Louis Von Neumann (1903-1957) Este científico matemático ocupa un lugar privilegiado en la historia de la computación debido a sus múltiples e importantísimos aportes a las computadoras de la primera generación. Nació el 28 de Diciembre de 1903 en Budapest (Hungría), llegando a ser uno de los más brillantes matemáticos de la era de la computación. Von Neumann fue un niño prodigio que a la edad de 6 años podía dividir mentalmente cifras de 8 dígitos. Recibió una temprana educación en su ciudad natal, bajo el tutelaje del matemático M. Fekete conjuntamente con el cual publicó su primer trabajo a la edad de 18 años. En 1921 ingresó a la facultad de Química de la Universidad de Budapest, pero decidió continuar sus estudios en Berlin y Zurich, graduándose de Ingeniero Químico en 1925. Inmediatamente después de graduado volvió a sus investigaciones y estudios de las matemáticas de las cuales fue un apasionado, logrando un doctorado en 1928. Over time, as he moved through different disciplines, his work "moved in the general direction of the post-war scientific disciplines, which had a decreased emphasis on motion, force, energy, and power and an increased emphasis on communication, organization, programming and control." The theme of self-reference in systems runs through much of von Neumann's work; early on, von Neumann and other mathematicians tried to eliminate self-reference and the contradictions it seemed to cause in set theory. Self-reference was a key element in many of von Neumann's later contributions as well, from his treatment of the apparent regresses of game theory to the self-reproduction of organisms. Born in Budapest in 1903, von Neumann was the oldest son of a successful Jewish banker. He received an exceptional formal and informal education; family connections exposed him to many of Hungary's intellectual luminaries of the period, and the Lutheran Gymnasium (one of Hungary's best secondary schools) provided him with a university tutor to nurture his mathematical gifts. He enrolled at both the University of Budapest and the University of Berlin in 1921. From 1923 to 1925 von Neumann studied chemical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, earning a degree in 1925, and the following year he earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Budapest. About John von Neumann John von Neumann was born in Budapest Hungary on December 28th, 1903. Von Neumann's genius showed through early on in his childhood. At the age of six he was already showing an interest in math and was able to exchange jokes with his father in classical Greek. By the age of eight he became fascinated with history and read all forty-four volumes of the universal history, which resided in the family’s library. John von Neumann received his early education at the Lutheran Gymnasium under the tutelage of Michael Fekete with whom he published his first paper at the age of eighteen. Von Neumann studied chemistry at the University of Berlin, until 1923 when he went to Technische Hochschule in Zurich where he received his diploma in Chemical Engineering in 1925. Von Neumann subsequently received his doctoral degree in Mathematics in 1928 from the University of Budapest at the age of twenty-two. His dissertation topic was set theory. Near the end of 1929, von Neumann was offered a visiting lectureship on quantum theory at Princeton University and by 1931 he was appointed full-time professor. In 1933 he was asked to be one of the original six Professors of Mathematics at the newly founded Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton. He retained this position for the rest of his life.
