LUDWIG VON MISES ON ECONOMICS, IDEOLOGY, WORLD VIEW AND THE AIM
AND METHOD OF ECONOMICS
March 15, 1998
.....The purpose of this short note is to describe Ludwig von Mises's distinction between economics, ideology, and world view, as described in his Human Action "The main objective of praxeology and economics," Mises declares, "is to substitute consistent correct ideologies for the contradictory tenets of popular eclecticism."(Mises 1966: 185) According to Mises, economics is a set of logical deductions about"what is" in the sense that the images it constructs must be relevant to the social facts one aims to describe. Ideology goes beyond the study of things as they are. It is "about the ought, i.e., about the ultimate ends which man should aim at in his earthly concerns."( ibid .: 178) Ideology can also be distinguished from the broader concept of a world view , which is an interpretation of all things, and as a precept for action, an opinion concerning the best means for removing uneasiness as much as possible...Religion, metaphysics, and philosophy aim at providing a world view. They interpret the universe and they advise men how to act."(

Ludwig von Mises Exchanges Views With Georgists "Professor Ludwig von Mises was a guest of the director of the Henry George School of Social Science in New York, Robert Clancy, for an informal evening in November, 1951. A number of faculty members welcomed the opportunity to meet this well-known author and hear his views on Henry George's works. Professor von Mises agreed that he would like to see an increasd levy on land, but he cited historical reasons why he does not facor confiscation of land a term which he holds is concomitant with the taking of the full economic rent. Though his views did not go unchallenged, they wre well taken." [reprinted from the Henry George News , February and March, 1952]
Ludwig von Mises, at the request of director Robert Clancy, kindly consented to condense in writing his critical views on the confiscation of the rent of land used for agriculture. Among a group of New York and Newark Georgists who are students and readers of Professor Von Mises, these views occasioned thoughtful comment at the time of his visit to the Henry George School. Dr. von Mises wrote:
"If the government confiscates the whole rent of land, it does not make any difference for the individual farmer whether the soil he tills is more or less fertile. The same input of capital and labor yields

http://www.cooperativeindividualism.org/johannsen_mises.html
Ludwig von Mises: Praxeologist Supreme Oscar B. Johannsen [reprinted from Fragments , January-March 1981] As the libertarian movement in America gains in strength, the name of Ludwig von Mises crops up increasingly in economic and social literature. Who was he? He was an economist of the Austrian School, born 1n Lemberg, Austria-Hungary (now Lvov in the Russian Ukraine) in 1881, dying 92 years later in New York City in 1973. For most libertarians, the Austrian School is the one on which they base much of their economic rationale.
Mises, a member of the upper class of his country, was fortunate in being the son of cultured and educated parents. His younger brother, Richard, made a name for himself as a positivist and mathematician. (Ironically, Ludwig was violently opposed to positivism.)
Mises was graduated from the University of Vienna with a Dr. Jr. degree, Doctor of both Canon and Roman Laws. Although throughout most of his life he was a steadfast end uncompromising foe of collectivism, in his youth he had adopted the mild socialism prevalent among the younger generation at that time. But almost overnight, by himself, he discovered classical liberalism and spent the rest of his life fighting socialism and communism and upholding capitalism, as he understood it.
Long before I met Mises, I had read most of his major works, including his magnum opus

Resources for Economics for Real People
In my humble, unbiased opinion, the best economic site on the web is Mises.org , the web site of the Ludwig von Mises Institute. The site features daily articles on contemporary economic issues, back issues of several periodicals, a number of online books by Mises, and many other resources for both scholars and students. Best of all, it's all searchable. Editor Jeff Tucker has created an economics web site that is worth going to every day , no small feat. Greg Ransom, apparently accomplishing a Herculean effort on his own, has established a thriving Hayek Center site that is also worth checking into frequently. Greg keeps up-to-date lists of articles that have interested him, both on Hayek and on political economy in general, and runs a very active discussion group for Hayek scholars. The web site of The Foundation for Economic Education , after being stagnant for some time, has recently become an active and interesting place to visit. The Ideas on Liberty archive is a great resource.

The Tenacity of Ludwig von Mises
by Gary North Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973) is not widely regarded as a major figure of twentieth-century economic theory. The main reason for this assessment is the fact that those within the economics profession who make such career-enhancing imputations regarding other economists have adopted economic theories that he had refuted before most of them were born, or in some cases, before their fathers were born. His contemporaries adopted a time-honored technique of dealing with him: the memory hole. "Mises? Who's Mises?" Their successors remained in the dark. He fully understood the game. When his wife once told him that his ideas would be more widely received some day, he replied that an academic man's influence can be estimated by references to him the footnotes of his contemporaries. His name and work were missing. The vast majority of professionals in any field, including academic disciplines, never make a major intellectual contribution. Few of them make even a minor contribution. Few of them are remembered after they retire, if they were known before they retired. They are practitioners of what Thomas Kuhn has called "normal science," and most of them are normal practitioners. Mises was in this sense highly abnormal.

LUDWIG VON MISES ON ECONOMICS, IDEOLOGY, WORLD VIEW AND THE AIM
AND METHOD OF ECONOMICS
March 15, 1998
The purpose of this short note is to describe Ludwig von Mises's distinction between economics, ideology, and world view, as described in his Human Action .(1966) He makes this distinction in order to clarify his view of the goal of economics. This view is exemplified in the following quotes:
It is the task of history to describe the historical conditions which made such a crude doctrine popular. Economics has another task. It must analyze both Marxian polylogism and the other brands of polylogism formed after its pattern, and expose their fallacies and contradictions(Mises 1966, p. 75).
It is the task of scientific technology and therapeutics to explode errors in their respective fields. It is the task of economics to expose erroneous doctrines in the field of social action. But if men do not follow the advice of science, but cling to fallacious prejudices, these errors are reality and must be dealt with as such( ibid ., p. 93).
