Minister for Defence, Leader of the Government in the Senate
Senator The Hon. Robert Hill
Defence wins international award for aircraft fatigue test
The Von Karman award was accepted in Toronto on behalf of Defence by AIRCDRE Noel Schmidt, Director-General of Technical Airworthiness. This is the first time Australia has won the award which recognises outstanding examples of international cooperation in the field of aeronautics and is named after Dr. Theodore Von Karman, one of the greatest aeronautical scientists of the twentieth century.
Senator Hill said this award demonstrates that Australia's aeronautical research and development capability is among the best in the world.
"This is a great tribute to Australia's scientists and engineers and Air Force personnel who have been working diligently on the Hornet fatigue test program. The recognition will also increase the exposure of the Australian aerospace industry to international audiences, and further highlight Australia's R&D capability."
DSTO's International Follow-On Structural Test Project, undertaken in collaboration with the Canadian Forces which shares the award, is aimed at extending the safe operating life of the Hornet fleet by up to 25 percent, an achievement that could save the ADF millions of dollars.

DSTO wins international award for aeronautical work
The International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) has awarded the prestigious Von Karman award to the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) for its international programme assessing the fatigue life of the F/A-18 A/B Hornet aircraft. The Royal Australian Air Force is named as the cooperating organisation with DSTO.
This is the first time Australia has won the award, which recognises outstanding examples of international cooperation in the field of aeronautics. DSTO's structural testing programme, undertaken in collaboration with the Canadian Forces which shares the award, is aimed at extending the safe operating life of the Hornet fleet by up to 25 percent, an achievement that could save the Defence force up to $1.3 billion. Dr Bill Schofield, recently retired Director of DSTO's Aeronautical and Maritime Research Laboratory said that substantial cost savings had already been achieved in both Australia and Canada through life extension, with further benefits on the horizon as more detailed results are collected and applied. "This award demonstrates that Australia's aeronautical research and development capability is as good as any in the world," he said.

Dr Theodore von Kármán's lifelong mission of scientific cooperation was inherited from his father, Maurice von Kármán, a distinguished philosopher and educator at the university of Budapest, who at the beginning of the last century predicted that in about fifty years, scientific understanding would transcend national boundaries and lead to international cooperative ventures. The Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development AGARD ) and the Defence Research Group DRG ) where, in a very general sense, creations by the son bearing out the prediction of the father half a century earlier. Theodore von Kármán was a true international engineering scientist and his interests went far beyond aerospace engineering as is evident from his activities, his publications and lectures.

scales). Figure 1 SearsHaack body vs von karman ogive. The wavedrag of the Sears-Haack body scales with (V=volume, L=length).

Bodies of Minimum Wave Drag
Summary

Drag at supersonic speeds include the drag components at subsonic flow conditions (skin friction drag and induced drag) and a wave drag , characteristic of supersonic flows only. This drag component is in fact due to the energy radiated by the aerodynamic system through the shock waves. The wave drag is on turns divided in (wave) drag due to volume and (wave) drag due to lift. It can be proved that the wave drag is proportional to the volume and inversely proportional to the fourth power of the body length.
Sears-Haack Body
The Sears-Haack body is a slender body of revolution pointed at both ends, that corresponds to the minimum wave drag (for given volume and length) of a linear distribution of sources at supersonic speeds.
Figure 1: Sears-Haack body vs von Karman ogive
The wave drag of the Sears-Haack body scales with V =volume, L =length). Therefore, for given volume it is convenient to have very long bodies. Doubling the length L at constant V will reduce the wave drag by a factor 8.

91. John Junkins Awarded Von Karman Medal And Lectureship
the George J. Eppright Chair at Texas A M University, has been awarded the Theodorevon karman Medal by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
http://www.tamu.edu/univrel/aggiedaily/news/stories/archive/012897-4.html
John Junkins Awarded Von Karman Medal And Lectureship
COLLEGE STATION Junkins presented the von Karman Lecture entitled "Adventures on the Interface of Dynamics and Control" at the AIAA Aerospace Sciences meeting in Reno, Nev., Jan. 6-9. He will represent AIAA on a lecture tour during 1997, repeating the presentation at a dozen locations around the world. The annual award is named in honor of pioneering California Institute of Technology Professor Theodore von Karman. His many accomplishments included, in the 1940s, leading the national panel that created the United States Air Force as a separate armed service and set the direction toward the jet age. Junkins was selected to receive this year's von Karman Lectureship based on his accomplishments in aerospace engineering, teaching and research over the past three decades. During the late 1960s at McDonnell Douglas, he developed pioneering guidance and control methods for the Delta rocket. In the 1970s, he developed a method for spacecraft navigation using computer-automated on-board star pattern recognition. In 1980, he developed a method for using the earth's magnetic field to change the pointing direction of a spinning satellite in minimum time. During recent years Junkins has developed control methods for maneuvering large flexible spacecraft and has invented patented laser sensing technology for applications in machine vision and multimedia. His ideas have been implemented successfully in many space missions. Widely recognized for his scholarship, he has authored over 330 publications, including three books.

"Frank J. Malina's Memoirs" (3 volumes)
Frank Malina a douze ans.
