Aerojet's Beginnings - Late 1930's It was an unusual group of men who assembled in Theodore von Karman's Pasadena living room in 1936 to discuss the possibilities of sending rockets into outer space: von Karman, an internationally acclaimed professor from the California Institute of Technology; Frank Malina, a talented artist and an outstanding graduate student at CalTech; Martin Summerfield, PhD candidate at CalTech; John W. Parsons, a self-taught chemist with a gift for poetry; and Ed Forman, a highly skilled mechanic who had been sharing ideas with Parsons and whose backyard in Pasadena was pock-marked from earlier experiments. Even at an institution like CalTech, rocketry in the 1930s was little more than a curiosity. Everyone sang about the "rocket's red glare," but very few knew - or cared - about how rockets really worked. But the small, impassioned group of scientists in von Karman's living room shared a common dream that stretched the limits of imagination, and they set off to change the future. In 1938 only two government grants were available for aeronautic research, one for rockets and the other for windshield icing. Dr. Jerome Hunsaker of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said, "We'll take the problem of visibility; von Karman can have the Buck Rogers job." Another noted researcher said to von Karman, "I don't understand how a serious scientist or engineer can play around with rockets." Play or work, it was a spectacular bonus for the world that von Karman and his cohorts had the vision to stick with "Buck Rogers."

The Three Synergistic Approaches to Science
Ideas, the advancement of human knowledge, and the follow-through from discovery to completion are the three synergistic approaches to science.
Mr. James Engle, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Science, Technology, and Engineering, Washington, DC (based on comments at the AFRL Fellows Banquet)
OOne important way to view science is through three of its contributions to human culture: the idea, the advancement of human knowledge, and the follow-through from discovery to completion. This may seem a strange way to characterize science, but it is essential that performers of science in the Air Force (AF) understand these contributions. For nearly 60 years, the AF has been blessed with focus, leadership, and vision. A significant part of its lore and history can be found in a pair of letters exchanged by General of the Air Force Henry "Hap" Arnold and Dr. Theodore Von Karman. The first of these letters, from Gen Arnold to Dr. Von Karman on 7 Nov 1944, was a tasking memorandum concerning the Army/AF Long Range Development program. It forms the foundation of the excellence of science in the AF today. It begins "I believe the security the United States of America will continue to rest, in part, in the developments instituted by our educational and professional scientists." Gen Arnold instructed Dr. Von Karman to begin a study called Toward New Horizons. Gen Arnold goes on to talk about reviewing the principles of warfare, and many of those are incredibly interesting today. One example of his principles found in that letter is that "we are a nation now as one of the predominant powers on earth."

The January, 1917, Catalogue of the Throop College of Technology (which later became the California Institute of Technology) contains the following: Just as this catalogue goes to press, generous and wise friends of the college have undertaken to provide facilities for research in the science of Aeronautics, with every prospect of the cooperation of the United States Government. A wind tunnel will immediately be built and equipped in the best fashion, and a graduate course will probably be provided for students desiring to specialize in this branch of physics and engineering. Architects of Air Supremacy: General Hap Arnold and Dr. Theodore Von Karman
Authors: Daso, Dik A.; AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH Abstract: When the Wright Brothers accomplished America's first powered airplane flight on 17 December 1903, they would have been hard pressed to believe that in less than one century, manned aircraft would refuel in midair, travel at hyper-sonic speeds, carry tons of cargo in warehouse size holds, or serve as the primary means of international world travel. Their airplane was a device which had only one purpose, to lift a man into the sky. Today, aircraft perform too many functions to count, using so many different designs that even knowing them all is a monumental undertaking. But how is it that we have come so far, so fast? Important answers lie in the complex relationship between the American military and the society in which it exists. Individuals, both military and civilian, make decisions based upon perceptions and experience as much as upon the presumed capability of a particular technology. In the case of the Army and the air weapon, this was particularly true.
