Majestic Personnel > Dr. Theodore Von Karman Theodore Von Karman was a mathematical prodigy and his father, fearing that his son would become a freak, steered him towards engineering. He graduated in 1902 from Budapest and from 1903 to 1906 he worked at the Technical University of Budapest. Von Karman left Budapest to study at Göttingen, where he was greatly influenced by Klein; and Paris where he watched some pioneering aviation flights, which turned his interest to apply mathematics to aeronautics. In 1911 Von Karman made an analysis of the alternating double row of vortices behind a flat body in a fluid flow, which is now known as Karman's Vortex Street. In the following year Karman accepted a post as director of the Aeronautical Institute at Aachen in Germany. He was to visit the United States in 1926 and four years later he was offered the post of director of the Aeronautical Laboratory at California Institute of Technology. Despite his love for Aachen, the political events in Germany persuaded him to accept. In 1933 Von Karman founded the U.S. Institute of Aeronautical Sciences where he continued his research on fluid mechanics, turbulence theory and supersonic flight. He studied applications of mathematics to engineering, aircraft structures, and soil erosion. Relevance to Majestic Documents Von Karman’s name appears in a number of Majestic-related documents. He is listed as a Contributing Member on the "White Hot" report of 19 September 1947, and is also referred to in the 16 July 1947 "Air Accident Report" on 'Flying Disc' aircraft near the White Sands Proving Ground, New Mexico.

Theodore von Karman - Scott #2699
Date of Issue - August 31, 1992
Dr. von Karman was one of the world's foremost aerodynamicsts and scientists and is
widely recognized as the father of modern aerospace science. He was born in Budapest,
Hungary, in 1881, and later emigrated to the United States. He was chairman of the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) Advisory Group for Aeronautical
Research and Development (AGARD), a position he held from the time the Group was
formed, on his recommendation, in 1952.
During World War II, he was chairman of the Scientific Advisory Group founded by
Army Air Corps General H. H. "Hap" Arnold. Later, he became Chairman Emeritus of
the Advisory Group's successor, the Scientific Advisory Board. He also served as consultant to a number of industrial concerns and to the Department of Defense, the Army and the Navy, as well as the Air Force.

American Rocket Scientists One of the fathers of modern rocketry is the American, Dr. Robert Goddard (along with Konstantin Tsiolkovsky of Russia and Hermann Oberth of Germany). Dr. Goddard envisioned the exploration of space and had a genius for invention. Dr. Goddard constructed and tested successfully the first rocket using liquid fuel on March 16,1926, at Auburn, Massachusetts. As important in history as the flight of the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk, it was just one of Goddard's "firsts" in rocket propulsion.
Goddard's rockets made little impression upon government officials who saw them. Only through the modest subsidies of the Smithsonian Institution and the Daniel Guggenheim Foundation, as well as the leaves of absence granted him by Worcester Polytechnic Institute of Clark University, was Goddard able to sustain his lifetime of devoted research and testing. Goddard first obtained public notice in 1907 in a cloud of smoke from a powder rocket fired in the basement of the physics building in Worcester Polytechnic Institute. School officials took an immediate interest in the work of the student, Robert Goddard. To their credit, they did not expel him and thus he began his lifetime of dedicated work.
His rocket flight in 1929 carried the first scientific payload on a rocket, a barometer, and a camera. Dr. Goddard developed and demonstrated the basic idea of the "bazooka" two days before the Armistice in 1918 at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. This was later further developed and produced as the World War II bazooka. In World War II, Goddard developed, among other things, the first liquid propellant rocket motors capable of variable thrust. He died on August 10,1945, four days after the first atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. At the time of his death Goddard held 214 patents in rocketry.

His scientific reputation rested on a series of profound insights on the nature of aerodynamics, which he demonstrated through a highly intuitive style of applied mathematics. He published more then two hundred papers, which laid much of the technical basis of flight. He forged scientific cooperation and founded a number of powerful aerospace institutions.

Theodore von Karman Theodore von Karman (1881-1963), born in Budapest, became a member of the Academy in 1938, just two years after he obtained his US citizenship. Von Karman was noted for his work in fluid mechanics, a field he entered in earnest after 1912, when he became Professor of Aerodynamics and Mechanics as well as Director of the Aerodynamics Institute at Aachen, Germany. When World War I broke out in 1914, he returned to his native Hungary, where he eventually became head of research in the Austro-Hungarian Army Aviation Corps. During this time he designed an early version of the helicopter, which was intended to solve the problems plaguing the observation balloons then in use. In 1930 he moved permanently to the US to head the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory, and in 1938 he served on an NAS committee advising the US Army Air Corps on the use of rocket power to assist airplanes in taking off. In 1944, he chaired the Army Air Force's newly-created Scientific Advisory Group, which studied the then-cutting edge technologies in rocketry, guided missiles, and jet propulsion. His important theory of the behavior of boundary layers and his related studies of fluid flow at high subsonic, transsonic, and supersonic speeds were of great importance to post-World War II progress in all areas of flight. Personally, von Karman was known as a colorful, multilingual character who enjoyed entertaining a diverse circle of friends and acquaintances.
