Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz German physician and physicist Helmholtz was the son of a gymnasium headmaster, Ferdinand Helmholtz, who had studied classical philology and philosophy , and who was a close friend of the publisher and philosoper Immanuel Hermann Fichte . Helmholtz's work is influenced by the philosophy of Fichte and Kant . He tried to trace their theories in empirical matters like physiology As a young man, Helmholtz was interested in natural science, but his father wanted him to study medicine because there was financial support for medical students. His first important scientific achievement, an physics treatise on the conservation of energy was written in the context of his medical studies and philosophical background. He had discovered the principle of conservation of energy while studying muscle metabolism. He tried to prove that no energy is lost in muscle movement, because this also meant that there were no vital forces necessary to move a muscle. That was a rejection of the speculative tradition of Naturphilosophie which was at that time a dominant philosophical paradigm in German physiology. In he invented the ophthalmoscope , an instrument which can be used to look into the human eye. Helmholtz's interests at that time were increasingly focused on the physiology of the senses. His main publication was the

Born: 31 Aug 1821 in Potsdam, Germany Died: 8 Sept 1894 in Berlin, Germany Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz
Hermann von Helmholtz's father was August Ferdinand Julius Helmholtz while his mother was Caroline Penn. Hermann was the eldest of his parents four children. His childhood had a strong influence on both his character and his later career. In particular the views on philosophy held by his father restricted Helmholtz's own views.
Ferdinand Helmholtz had served in the Prussian army in the fight against Napoleon. Despite having a good university education in philology and philosophy, he became a teacher at Potsdam Gymnasium. It was a poorly paid job and Hermann was brought up in financially difficult circumstances. Ferdinand was an artistic man and his influence meant that Hermann grew up to have a strong love of music and painting. Caroline Helmholtz was the daughter of an artillery officer. From her Hermann inherited [1]:-
... the placidity and reserve which marked his character in later life.
Hermann attended Potsdam Gymnasium where his father taught philology and classical literature. His interests at school were mainly in physics and he would have liked to have studied that subject at university. The financial position of the family, however, meant that he could only study at university if he received a scholarship. Such financial support was only available for particular topics and Hermann's father persuaded him that he should study medicine which was supported by the government.

Aug. 31, 1821-Sept. 8, 1894 Helmholtz's medical education, combined with his passion for physics led him to vitally important discoveries in physiology and optics. He was one of several researchers to independently derive the law of conservation of energy. He followed significant early investigations into human sensory systems with elemental work in sound and hearing. In the 1850s and 1860s he published major works dealing with human optics and color vision. Though he never worked with Thomas Young , their names were attached to the classical theory of human color vision. Later in his career, he did important work in electrodynamics and electromagnetism. One of the great physicists and physiologists of the nineteenth century, he investigated human vision and hearing, as well as electromagnetism, mathematics, and even meteorology.
