Lewis Caroll's Logic Game
Lewis Carroll's fame is universal. I can easily cite a couple dozen books that mention him or quote from his books. Temptation to quote from Alice's experiences with which so many people can identify, is indeed great. But the trend may be reversing. In the introduction to a book I have recently come across, the author found it necessary to mention that in the whole of the book there is not a single reference to either Alice in Wonderland or Through the Looking Glass - the two books that made the name of Lewis Carroll a household item the world over. However, his other works are either forgotten or known far less. In real life he was a mathematician C.L.Dodgson with deep interest in symbolic logic and logical reasoning. On these pages, I have described one of his probability and the doublets puzzles. The next few pages will be devoted to his Logic Game , an invention that competes with a device for solving logical problems known by the name of Venn Diagrams - bequested to us by another otherwise very little known mathematician J.Venn. Naming of the diagrams after Venn is as universal as it is

Following is an excerpt from
The Mathematical Universe
by William Dunham In the mid-nineteenth century, John Venn (1834-1923), a Fellow of Cambridge University, devised a scheme for visualizing logical relationships. Venn was a cleric in the Anglican Church, an authority on what was then called "moral science," and the compiler of a massive index of all Cambridge alumni. He was not terribly outstanding in mathematics. But, for better or worse, a single contribution has made him immortal. That contribution is the Venn diagram. It is as much a fixture of' today's textbooks as the title page or table of contents. A Venn diagram is simply a field within which circular areas represent groups of items sharing common properties. For instance, within the universe of all animals (the large rectangle in Figure V. 1), region C represents the camels, region B the birds, and region A the albatrosses. A glance at the diagram reveals that
  • All albatrosses are birds (region A lies entirely within region B
  • No camels are birds (regions C and B are nonintersecting).

Comparison with a Contemporary
Ross Chambers: A little light Googling finds a contemporary and near colleague of CLD who is led to a doubt of the 39 Articles possibly as a result of his work in Logic. Please pardon the truncation of the text. Could Colenso's (see the Snark) arithmetical problems with the Pentateuch have similar roots? John Venn was born August 4, 1834, in Hull, Humberside, England, to a prominent evangelical family. In 1853, after graduation from high school, Venn enrolled in Gonville and Caius College, in Cambridge. He was elected a mathematical scholar in 1854 and by 1857 he had gained his Bachelor of the Arts degree. Also in 1857, Venn was elected a Fellow of the College and remained so for the rest of his life. Venn's family background led him to be ordained as a deacon at Ely in 1858, and as a priest in 1859. After that, he held offices at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and Mortlake, Surrey until 1862, when he returned to Cambridge as a college lecturer in moral sciences. For the next thirty years, Venn became interested in logic. He published three standard texts based upon this topic. He wrote The Logic of Chance in 1866, Symbolic Logic in 1881, and The Principles of Empirical Logic in 1889. While he pursued his research in logic, Venn found he could no longer follow the Thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England. At this point in time, many controversies were brewing about the Articles, and people of high Victorian, post-Darwinian England lost their faith in the Church. Venn himself, never actually lost his faith but he abjured his clerical orders in 1883, just the same. This same year, Venn was elected to the Royal Society, and the University of Cambridge awarded him a ScD.

Math A Venn Diagrams (Sets)
A Venn diagram is a drawing, in which circular areas represent groups of items sharing common properties. The drawing consists of two or more circles, each representing a specific group. This process of visualizing logical relationships was devised by John Venn (1834-1923). Each Venn diagram begins with a rectangle representing the universal set. Then each set in the problem is represented by a circle. Any values that belong to more than one set will be placed in the sections where the circles overlap. The Venn diagram at the left shows two sets A and B . Values that belong to both set A and set B are located in the center region labeled A ^ B where the circles overlap. The notation A v B represents the entire region covered by both sets A and B
If we cut out sets A and B , the remaining region in U
would be labeled ~(A v B) ** The most interesting features of Venn diagrams are the areas or sections where the circles overlap one another implying that a sharing is occurring.

Contents of this Page Egyptian Arithmetic The Venn Diagram Arithmetic Around the World: Multiplication Rules for Divisibility Egyptian Arithmetic The Egyptians were one of the first civilizations to use mathematics in an extensive setting. Their system was derived from base ten and this was probably so because of the number of fingers and toes. In later years the Greeks would use the abstract qualities of math, however, it appears the Egyptians were only concerned with the practical aspects of numbers. For example while the Greeks might actually use see and think the number six, the Egyptians would need concrete items such as such as six sphinxes. Egyptian numbers were represented by symbols in the following way: a rod for the number one, a heal bone for ten, a snare for 100, a lotus flower for 1,000, a bent finger for 10,000, a burbot fish for 100,000, and a kneeling figure for 1,000,000. Symbol a rod a heel bone a snare a lotus flower a pointing finger a burbot fish a kneeling figure Their number system worked very well when doing addition or subtraction. The numbers were grouped together in no particular order and the operation was performed. In one example, from the Rhind Papyrus, addition and subtraction signs were represented through figures which resemble the legs of a person advancing for addition, and departing for subtraction.
