Invaluable to the historian or genealogist, it is often the only source of information available on many lesser-known writers and thinkers (theologians, lawyers, politicians, doctors, scientists, civil servants, and so on), figures whose lifetime achievements it would otherwise be almost impossible to discover. Containing details of thousands of major and 'minor' British figures covering a 400-year period, the work is divided into two periods (up to 1751 and 17521900), with each part arranged alphabetically by surname. Considering the large majority of the educated population of Britain pre-1800 attended either Oxford or Cambridge

Biographies of Mathematicians - Venn
John Venn
John Venn was a British logician made famous by his logical diagrams. Namely, the Venn Diagram, which is used often in teaching elementary mathematics. Venn's Life John Venn was born August 4, 1834, in Hull, Humberside, England, to a prominent evangelical family. When he was young, his father, Henry Venn, moved to London in order to take up the occupation of honorary secretary to the Church Missionary Society. Venn began his education in London, at Sir Roger Cholmley's School, which is now known as Highgate School. In 1853, after graduation from high school, Venn enrolled in Gonville and Caius College, in Cambridge. He was elected a mathematical scholar in 1854 and by 1857 he had gained his Bachelor of the Arts degree. Also in 1857, Venn was elected a Fellow of the College and remained so for the rest of his life. Venn's family background led him to be ordained as a deacon at Ely in 1858, and as a priest in 1859. After that, he held offices at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and Mortlake, Surrey until 1862, when he returned to Cambridge as a college lecturer in moral sciences. For the next thirty years, Venn became interested in logic. He published three standard texts based upon this topic. He wrote

John Venn: English Mathematician

Venn's original diagram pictured three circles (sets) called R, S , and T as overlapping subsets of a larger set U. The diagram clearly divided the sets into eight distinct regions.
A simple Venn diagram pictures two circles (sets) with an overlapping subset (things that the sets have in common). The diagram divides the sets into four distinct regions, elements (things) that are only in the set A, elements that are only in the set B, the intersection (things that are in both set A and set B), and elements that are in neither set A nor Set B. John Venn (August 4, 1834 - April 4, 1923) was an English mathematician/logician who invented the Venn diagram. His diagram clearly shows the similarities and differences for two different sets; it is a visual way to represent sets, and their unions and intersections. Venn's diagrams were first published in 1880, in "Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science" - Venn's article was called, "On the Diagrammatic and Mechanical Representation of Propositions and Reasonings."

Scrivener Notaries London, England. , which is one of the oldest City livery companies, traces its origins as far back as 1373. The Company sets the examinations for prospective scrivener notaries and prescribes the other qualifications for entry to the profession. It is one of the few livery companies which still governs a "living" profession. The profession is a highly specialised one and has grown out of the unique position of the City of London as an international trading centre. Nearly all the work of scrivener notaries is of an international nature, although they are competent to advise on certain domestic matters as well. Scrivener notaries are trained not only in English law, but also in relevant aspects of the law of a foreign country. They are also examined in two foreign languages. This places them in a unique position to provide a bridge between the common law system prevalent in the English speaking world, and the civil law system found in many other parts of the world, including most countries in continental Europe and the whole of Latin America. Scrivener notaries are therefore able to certify documents in many languages and also to prepare legal documents -for example powers of attorney - in the form and language of the country in which they are to be used.
Notarisation and Legalisation
Within its specialised areas of the law firm provides a full range of notarial services with a foreign element or cross-border context. In this context, the main areas of activity are:
