Who was John Venn?
Venn diagrams were introduced in 1880 by John Venn, "M.A. Fellow and Lecturer in Moral Science, Caius College, Cambridge University", in a paper entitled On the Diagrammatic and Mechanical Representation of Propositions and Reasonings which appeared in the Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science S. 5. Vol. 9. No. 59. July 1880, [ John Venn was born August 4, 1834 in Hull, Yorkshire, England and died April 4, 1923 in Cambridge, England. He came from a Low Church Evangelical background and in 1853 entered Gonville and Caius College of Cambridge University in 1853. In 1857 he was named a Fellow of the college. He was ordained a priest 1859 and for a year was curate at Mortlake. He published his first book Symbolic Logic in 1881 and The Principles of Empirical Logic in 1889. In 1883 John Venn was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He wrote a history of his college, The Biographical History of Gonville and Caius College 1349-1897 (1897), and then began to compile a history of Cambridge University. He completed three volumes, and others continue the work, with the eighth volume now in preparation.

He graduated in 1857, was elected a Fellow in that year. In 1862 he returned to Cambridge University as a lecturer in Moral Science, studying and teaching logic. He developed mathematical logic and is best known for his diagrammatic way of representing sets and their unions and intersections. Venn published Symbolic Logic in 1881 and The Principles of Empirical Logic in 1889. The second of these is less original but the first was described by as probably his most enduring work on logic In 1883 Venn was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. About this time his career changed direction. He had already left the Church in 1870 but his interest now turned to history. He wrote a history of his college, publishing The Biographical History of Gonville and Caius College 1349-1897 in 1897.

John Venn was a British logician made famous by his logical diagrams.
These are now known as Venn Diagrams, and are often used in teaching elementary mathematics.
Venn's Life
John Venn was born August 4, 1834, in Hull, Humberside, England, to a prominent Anglican family. When he was young, his father, Henry Venn, moved to London in order to take up the occupation of honorary secretary to the Church Missionary Society. Venn began his education in London, at Sir Roger Cholmley's School, which is now known as Highgate School. In 1853, after graduation from high school, Venn enrolled in Gonville and Caius College, in Cambridge. He was elected a mathematical scholar in 1854 and by 1857 he had gained his Bachelor of the Arts degree. Also in 1857, Venn was elected a Fellow of the College and remained a Fellow for the rest of his life. Venn's family background led him to be ordained as a deacon at Ely in 1858, and as a priest in 1859. After that, he held offices at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and Mortlake, Surrey until 1862, when he returned to the Cambridge as a college lecturer in moral sciences. For the next thirty years, Venn became interested in logic. He published three standard texts based upon this topic. He wrote

What are the 3 most important elements of this situation? What characteristics do the elements have in common? What characteristics do the elemtns not have in common? 4. What makes Venns very interesting is the overlap areas. It's fairly easy to put labels on each of the 3 circles. but it's the overlap areas that stimulate the person, at least in the way we use Venn Diagrams at TeleClass.com and Coach University The overlap areas are even more poweful than the circles themselves. Life occurs in the overlap areas. The overlap areas are where the 'truth' is. So, one uses Venn Diagrams to identify or presence truth. 5. William Wilberforce , the son of a wealthy merchant, was born in Hull in 1759. William's father died when he was young and for a time was brought up by an uncle and aunt. William came under the influence of his aunt, who was a strong supporter of John Wesley and the Methodist movement. Disturbed by these developments, Mrs. Wilberforce brought her son back to the family home.
At seventeen Wilberforce was sent to St. John's College, Cambridge . Wilberforce was shocked by the behaviour of his fellow students and later wrote: "I was introduced on the very first night of my arrival to as licentious a set of men as can well be conceived. They drank hard, and their conversation was even worse than their lives." One of Wilberforce's friends at university was William Pitt , who was later to become Britain's youngest ever Prime Minister.

John Venn 's mother, Martha Sykes, came from Swanland near Hull and died while he was still quite a young boy. His father was the Rev Henry Venn who, at the time of John's birth, was the rector of the parish of Drypool, near Hull. The Rev Henry Venn, himself a fellow of Queen's, was from a family of distinction. His father, John's grandfather, was the Rev John Venn who had been the rector of Clapham in south London. He became the leader of the Clapham Sect, a group of evangelical Christians centred on his church. They successfully campaigned for the abolition of slavery, advocated prison reform and the prevention of cruel sports, and supported missionary work abroad. It was not only Venn's grandfather who played a prominent role in the evangelical Christian movement, for so did his father the Rev Henry Venn. The Society for Missions in Africa and the East was founded by evangelical clergy of the Church of England in 1799 and in 1812 it was renamed the Church Missionary Society for Africa and the East. The Rev Henry Venn became secretary to this Society in 1841 and in order to carry out his duties moved to Highgate near London. He held this position until his death in 1873. As might be expected from his family background, John was very strictly brought up, and there was never any thought other than that he would follow the family tradition into the priesthood. He attended first Sir Roger Cholmley's School in Highgate, then the private Islington Preparatory School.

John Venn played a critical role in the development of modern logic by creating a system for diagramming that can test the validity of categorical syllogisms. Called Venn Diagrams, they are very useful for ensuring that an argument is valid. Venn diagrams use circles to represent sets, with the position and overlap of the circles showing the relationships between the sets. Here is an example of a Venn Diagram of the categorical proposition Some S are P The left circle represents the set of all members of S . The right circle represents the set of all members of P . The two circles overlap to represent the possibility that some members of one set may also be members of the other set. There is an X in the space of this overlap in order to represent the fact there actually is at least one element which is a member of both sets. If there were no

    Following is an excerpt from
    The Mathematical Universe
by William Dunham In the mid-nineteenth century, John Venn (1834-1923), a Fellow of Cambridge University, devised a scheme for visualizing logical relationships. Venn was a cleric in the Anglican Church, an authority on what was then called "moral science," and the compiler of a massive index of all Cambridge alumni. He was not terribly outstanding in mathematics. But, for better or worse, a single contribution has made him immortal. That contribution is the Venn diagram. It is as much a fixture of' today's textbooks as the title page or table of contents. A Venn diagram is simply a field within which circular areas represent groups of items sharing common properties. For instance, within the universe of all animals (the large rectangle in Figure V. 1), region C represents the camels, region B the birds, and region A the albatrosses. A glance at the diagram reveals that
    • All albatrosses are birds (region A lies entirely within region B
    • No camels are birds (regions C and B are nonintersecting).

    Venn, John
English logician whose diagram, known as the Venn diagram, is much used in the teaching of elementary mathematics.
Venn was born in Hull, Yorkshire, and studied at Cambridge. He became a priest, but abjured his clerical orders 1883. From 1862 he was a Cambridge college lecturer in moral sciences.
The use of geometrical representations to illustrate syllogistic logic was not new. Venn adopted the method of illustrating propositions by means of exclusive and inclusive circles, and added the new device of shading the segments of the circles to represent the possibilities that were excluded by the propositions at issue. Later, he extended his method by proposing a series of circles dividing the plane into compartments, so that each successive circle should intersect all the compartments already existing. This idea, taken up and refined by Charles Dodgson (the writer Lewis Carroll ), led to the use of the closed compartment enclosing the whole diagram to define what is now known as the universal set.
Venn published three standard texts: The Logic of Chance 1866, Symbolic Logic 1881, and The Principles of Empirical Logic 1889.

John Venn (1834-1923) British logician, known for the famous "Venn diagram". He was first interested in theology (his father was an evangelical divine), but influenced by such agnostics as Henry Sidgwick in Cambridge, and by reading Boole's or de Morgan's works on logic, he became a logician. As regards the traditional syllogism, he proposed the "existential" view that the four categorical forms of proposition are concerned with the existence or non-existence of a kind; and he propounded the view that universal poropositions do not have the "existential import" (that is, the view that a universal proposition does not imply any existential proposition). Thus, the Aristotelian syllogism on this view can be interpreted in terms of emptiness or nonemptiness of eight compartments marked out by three terms. Venn Diagram with 8 compartments Like many other logicians in the 19th century, he is also known for his work in probability theory. He is usually referred to as one of the founders of the frequency theory of probability, which interprets probability in terms of the long-run relative frequency of an event. He propounded this view in his Logic of Chance (1866, 3rd ed., 1888); but according to Sandy Zabell's recent study, Venn's view changed through the revision of this book, and he came closer to the "degree-of-belief" view, although he did not abandon the frequentist view.
