Andrei Nikolaevich Kolmogorov V. M. Tihomirov Department of Mathematics, Moscow State University, 117234 Moscow, Russia On the 20th of October 1987 one of the greatest scholars of our time, Andrei Nikolaevich Kolmogorov, passed away. A. N. Kolmogorov was born in 1903. His mother died in childbirth, his father did not take part in his upbringing, but in his childhood Kolmogorov was surrounded by love, care and attention. His mother's sister saw to his education and his early childhood was passed at her father's estate, his grandfather, a former big landowner. Those surrounding the boy tried to instill in him a love of knowledge, books and nature. 'I discovered the pleasure of mathematical discoveries early, at the age of five or six. I noticed the relations etc.' At home, where the boy grew up, his relatives organized a small school in the spirit of the new pedagogical ideas of that time. They 'published' a journal, 'Spring Swallows', in which the five year old boy 'oversaw' the mathematical section. He published his discovery in this journal. When the boy turned six years old, he moved to Moscow with his aunt. He was accepted into a Moscow gymnasium considered one of the most progressive of that time. The gymnasium was organized by a group of intelligentsia with a radical bent. The fact that along with normal studies many interesting pedagogical experiments were conducted differentiated it from most of the gymnasia of the time.

Alfred Tarski narozen: 14. ledna 1902 ve Varšavì, Ruské impérium (nyní Polsko) zemøel: 26. øíjna 1983 v Berkeley, California, USA Alfred Tarski významnì pøispìl k rozvoji øady oblastí moderní matematiky, vèetnì metamatematiky (oblasti matematické logiky), teorie množin, teorie míry a Lebesgueova integrálu, teorie modelování a obecné algebry. Tarski pøednášel na Univerzitì ve Varšavì, na Harvardské univerzitì a v roce 1942 se stal èlenem Kalifornské univerzity v Berkeley. V roce 1949 byl jmenován profesorem matematiky a v letech 1958 až 1960 byl výzkumným profesorem na Millerovì institutu základního výzkumu ve vìdì (the Miller Institute of Basic Research in Science) Pomocí sémantické metody, kterou Tarski vyvinul, byly formální vìdecké jazyky podrobeny hlubšímu studiu. Tarski se zabýval teorií modelování, matematickými problémy rozhodování a obecnou algebrou. Vypracoval axiomy pro "logické dùsledky", zabýval se deduktivními systémy, algebrou logiky a teorií definovatelnosti. Thomas Jan Stieltjes narozen: 29. prosince 1856 ve Zwolle, Holandsko zemøel: 31. prosince 1894 v Toulouse, Francie Thomas Stieltjes zaèal studovat v roce 1873 na Polytechnické škole v Delftu, ale svá studentská léta strávil samostudiem prací Gausse a Jacobiho, místo aby navštìvoval pøedepsané pøednášky. Proto u zkoušek neuspìl. Když se mu nepodaøilo složit zkoušky ani v roce 1875, ani v roce 1876, zasáhl jeho otec a pøimluvil se u øeditele Leidenské hvìzdárny, který byl jeho pøítelem. Díky tomu se Thomas stal v roce 1877 asistentem Leidenské observatoøe a zaèal si v roce 1882 dopisovat s Hermitem. Celý svùj život Stieltjes vìnoval matematice. V roce 1883, nìkolik mìsícù poté, co se oženil, odešel z místa v observatoøi a zaèal se vìnovat matematickému výzkumu. V lednu 1884 Stieltjes dostal nabídku na místo profesora matematické analýzy na Univerzitì v Groningenu, kterou pøijal. Bohužel, nakonec však jmenován nebyl, protože nemìl dostateènou kvalifikaci. Díky Hermiteovì pomoci ale Univerzita v Leidenu v èervnu 1884 nabídla Stieltjesovi èestný diplom z matematiky a astronomie. V roce 1885 Stieltjes odešel se svojí rodinou do Paøíže a v roce 1889 byl jmenován na místo profesora diferenciálního a integrálního poètu na Univerzitì v Toulouse.
