Francis Robbins Upton was a collaborator of Edison. One of the most educated of the staff at Menlo, mathematician and physicist Upton played a major role in the development of the electrical systems.

Francis Robbins Upton was born in Peabody, Massachusetts on July 26, 1852. He studied at Bowdoin College, Brunswick and then he went to Berlin where he studied under under Hermann von Helmholtz . Then Francis Upton returned to the USA and studied at Princeton University. He became the very first student to officially earn, by examination, a graduate degree from Princeton. He received the degree of Master of Science from Priceton in 1877 after being instructed by Cyrus Fogg Brackett. It was Brackett who, in 1889, founded at Princeton the first school of electrical engineering in the United States. In December 1878 Francis Upton joined Edison at his laboratory in Menlo Park, N.J. He was recruited by investors who felt it couldn't hurt to supplement Edison's wizardry with some advanced scientific training. They were right, and Upton's understanding of mathematics and physics was of critical assistance in the development Edison's electrical systems. At Menlo Park he worked as Edison's chief scientific assistant, preparing blueprints, performing calculations, and solving mathematical problems associated with Edison's incandescent electric lighting system. He also helped design incandescent lamps, dynamos, and the electric railway. Nicknamed "Culture" by his colleagues, he was placed in charge of the Edison Lamp Works in 1881.

Obituary Francis Marion Upton From: McLeansboro Times, January 15, 1925 FRANCIS MARION UPTON BORN AND RESIDED IN
HAMILTON COUNTY FOR 85 YEARS
Death has again visited our community and claimed another one of our much beloved and respected neighbors, Francis Marion Upton. His death occurred January 9, 1925, after a long illness of eight weeks which he bore with great fortitude. He was the son of David and Hannah Upton and was born in Hamilton county Nov. 16, 1839, aged 85 years, one month and 23 days. He was united in marriage to Malasie Daily in 1861 and to this union four children were born, three of them with his companion having preceded him in death. His companion died thirty years ago. He has made his home with his son, Elvis, for about eighteen years. He spent all of his life near where he was born and raised. He leaves besides his only son, one sister, Nancy Tolly of Mt. Vernon, Ill., ten grand children and nineteen great, grand children with many other relatives and friends to mourn his death. During his illness he was watched over by his family who administered to his wants and gave him all aid that was possible to be given but the Death Angel had called and he answered the call as every living one will have to do. France as he was known will be greatly missed by all.

It was Brackett who, in 1889, founded at Princeton the first school of electrical engineering in the United States. After obtaining his Master's degree Upton worked with Thomas Edison on mathematical problems associated with devices such as the incandescent lamp, the watt-hour meter and large dynamos. Although Edison was a genius as an inventor he had no formal education so was unable to translate his intuition into mathematics. For this he relied on Upton who produced mathematical formulations of Edison's ideas. Upton went to live in Menlo Park, New Jersey, since he worked there in the laboratory that Edison had set up in that village in 1876. The laboratory was a remarkable research environment for Upton to undertake his reseach in. Better equiped than most of the leading university laboratories, it possessed the finest equipment available. Galvanometers, storage batteries, induction coils, wire chemicals, photographic equipment and a forge were available. It also had a research library where scientific publications were held. About twenty skilled machinists, in addition to the mathematical physicist Upton, staffed what was the first ever industrial research laboratory.

The Francis Upton Graduate Fellowships The Upton Fellowships are made possible by a gift from The Lucy and Eleanor S. Upton Charitable Foundation and matched by alumnus Gordon Y.S. Wu (Class of 1958). Upton Fellows are awarded four years of financial support, including full tuition and a premium stipend. In addition, the award provides funds that can be used by the student for research expenditures and for travel to international professional conferences. The Upton Fellowships are named in memory of Francis Robbins Upton, the very first student to officially earn, by examination, a graduate degree from Princeton. He received a Masters of Science in 1877. Mr. Upton was a longtime associate of Thomas Edison. Since Edison was an intuitive genius with no formal education, he relied heavily upon Upton to interpret his revolutionary insights and translate them into mathematical equations. "Appointment as an Upton Fellow is one of the highest honors that our School can bestow on an incoming graduate student," said James Wei, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton. "They are chosen based on their outstanding achievements as undergraduates and their potential for success at Princeton and beyond."

My Java HTTP client has been tested by one of my customers against the Apache XML-RPC. So if anyone's interested in NTLM authentication using XML-RPC, I think the nogoop stuff is the only game in town. It also handles basic and digest with a uniform mechanism.

Ok. I just released my Java HTTP Client on the public. A bunch of new stuff on the nogoop site. And also a plea for feedback about what I should do with the inspectors. This is using a new discussion forum on the nogoop site. Now, onto the next thing. In the absence of something happening in inspector land, I have been thinking about compensating transactions. Yum.

Just saw the play Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Victoria Theatre and it was amazing. Check it out. I previously watched the movie and it only enhanced my experience of the play, and the theatre is very intimate.
