Karen Uhlenbeck Ph. D., Mathematics,
Brandeis University Dr. Uhlenbeck joined the mathematics faculty in 1987. Her teaching and research interests are primarily the application of non-linear partial differential equations to problems in differential geometry. She has done basic work on the minimal surfaces and Yang-Mills equations, as well as work which has general applicability to elliptic scale-invariant problems. She presently has a grant from the NSF to support current projects of gauge theory and the quantization of harmonic maps. In addition, she is one of the principal organizers of one of the regional geometry institutes sponsored by the NSF.

Sexism
Rob Kirby Last modified: Thu Apr 9 14:39:25 PDT Note (9 April, 98): The following article has been written over several years, and some of the data is now a few years old. It was originally submitted to the Notices of the AMS, which declined to accept it unless I removed the anecdote concerning Jenny Harrison; since anecdotes are an important part of the subject, and are usually unwritten and hard to verify, I did not wish to discard this one. The Newsletter of the AWM did not have the space, (but suggested a short letter referring to this article), so electronic publication in this form seemed to be the best alternative. I encourage replies, and will append them if the authors permit. SEXISM IN MATHEMATICS? by Rob Kirby "The persistence of rampant sexism seems almost unique to mathematics among scientific disciplines today.", [Paul Selvin, Science, 255, 1992, 13 March, page 1383]. This is the most extreme charge of sexism that I have run across. But lesser charges are common; for example, they are sprinkled through the pages of the Notices in September, 1991, and sometimes appear in issues of the Newsletter of the Association for Women in Mathematics. Often, it seems to me, an assumption of sexism in math stands behind calls for various forms of affirmative action. It is the purpose of this essay to discuss the charge of sexism within the math community at the elite, research oriented institutions. The charge of sexism rests on the quality of evidence (or lack thereof) for sexism. I wrote in this Newsletter (vol 25, no 6, page 22) that "there is, in print, nothing remotely close to evidence or argument that women are discriminated against in the math community". Out of context, this statement looks a bit extreme, and it is not surprising that it generated opposition; in particular Mary Beth Ruskai wrote: "I'm not sure what standard Kirby is applying here mathematical proof? guilt beyond reasonable doubt? preponderance of evidence? a videotape of a meeting in which someone says, "we won't hire any women"?" (AWM Newsletter, vol 26, no 2).

Davis, founder of Automobile Magazine and the dean of automotive journalists in the U.S. will receive an honorary degree and be the featured speaker at Spring Commencement on May 1.
ANN ARBOR, Mich.— Automobile Magazine, dubbed the "dean of America's automotive critics" by Time Magazine, will give the main address and receive an honorary degree at the University of Michigan's Spring Commencement May 1 in Michigan Stadium. Honorary degrees for Davis and five additional recipients were approved by the U-M Board of Regents at its March 18 meeting. Commencement begins at 10 a.m. U-M President Mary Sue Coleman said she is delighted that Davis has agreed to deliver the commencement address. "The automobile has been such a defining characteristic of life in America and in the state of Michigan, and we're very pleased to be able to recognize an individual whose work has been so influential in the culture of the automobile. His career is emblematic of how one creative, insightful writer can help shape an entire industry, and more," she said.

GRADUATE STUDIES - AIM HIGH: A Letter to Mathematics Majors
from Dr. C. F. Stephens, Chairman
Department of Mathematics, State University College of Arts and Sciences
February 26, 1981 ACADEMIC ADVISING - MATHEMATICS MAJORS
I. Introduction
In our advising pamphlet "WHY GRADUATE MATHEMATICS?", which was written by Dr. Vasily Cateforis of our mathematics faculty, you are advised to consider graduate studies and urged to aim high. The primary purpose of our mathematics program is not the preparation of students for graduate studies, but it is one of our purposes. We do hope that you will consider as one of the major purposes of an undergraduate liberal arts education the development of your ability to seek out the truth and to recognize the truth when you have found it. In addition, we hope you have been inspired to enjoy that life of the mind in which the pursuit of knowledge and understanding is its own justification and its own reward.
Your chance of becoming all you are capable of being depends on your opportunity to work and to study in a favorable learning environment as well as on your intellectual ability, motivation, high expectations and perseverance. Some information about academic environments which scholars consider favorable for mathematical research should be helpful to you. The recent publication "A Community of Scholars, The Institute for Advanced Study, Faculty and Members, 1930-1980" contains some useful information on this subject. A copy of this publication is in our mathematics reading room, which is opposite our mathematics coffee room.

Math History Homework You have a homework essay due Monday, May 3rd. Here is the description: Hand in ( online , in the student drop box) a full page essay about something you find interesting about a historical mathematician ; this should not be a biography, so be specific about the 'something' you find interesting. In addition, you will be asked to give a short summary of your research IN CLASS. That will not be on the actual due date - most likely over a period of a few weeks at the end of class people will do them. The idea is that you maybe do an hour of research in the library or by looking online, and then it would maybe take another hour to type or write your page. I will be giving class off on Friday, April 30th, to help you with this. Remember, it is to be handed in online, and separately from anything else due that week. If you are using a Mac, be sure to save your document in the .rtf format so that I can read it! Who on earth would you write about? Here is a very short list of some mathematicians and/or mathematically minded people whom you could write about; it is not complete, so don't get a math friend to complain about it: Euclid, Pythagoras, Archimedes, the Bernoullis, Euler, Fibonacci, Pascal, Fermat, Mersenne, Gauss, Abel, Galois, Dirichlet, Weierstrass, Fourier, Condorcet, Borda, Cauchy, Cantor, Hilbert, Ramanujan, Hardy, Laplace, Galileo, Newton, MacLane, Dickson, Jacobson, Einstein, Noether, Grothendieck, Gromov, Wiles... How should you go about this? Remember, no big deal - find something
