There is a performance problem for students who need to combine different skills. Students spend so much time mastering the details that they often miss the point as to why there is a need for scientific computing. Using projects drawn from practical situations, and a good high-level package such as MATLAB, can overcome much of this. The difficulty associated with learning scientific programming is greatly alleviated. This in turn frees more time for studying more advanced methods. The need to combine ideas from different areas makes this an idealcandidate for both team-teaching and student teamwork on the projects. In this paper, we discuss the use of this approach in a variety of scientific computing courses at different levels. Koltnow With your understanding, I'd like to dredge up a personal recollection of Frank and make a few observations about how I see his contribution to America's mobility. In my volunteer work at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, I have gathered well over a hundred oral histories which were largely personal reminiscences, and often essential to an historical record. So I elect to start with a personal recollection about Frank. Frank had something on his mind besides coffee and beignets. I was there as a representative of the truckers and he was trying to resolve the never-ending battle between truckers who wanted higher axle loads, and highway authorities who were trying to preserve pavements. Frank pulled out a piece of paper showing how one might slip an extra axle under truck trailers, thus reducing axle loads and perhaps even permitting heavier overall weights. Well, nothing is that simple, and we spent a pleasant half hour tossing his idea around. We agreed that the subject needed more research, field testing somewhere in the world, and an analysis of the financial and political impacts.

Changing families, challenging futures 6th Australian Institute of Family Studies Conference Melbourne 25-27 November 1998 WORKING WITH MALE SOLE PARENTS Sharon Turner, Peter Monk and Bala Mudaly Springvale Community Health Service ABSTRACT As the incidence of male sole parents increase it is not uncommon for professionals to be faced with requests for counselling and parenting support for men who are sole parents. Issues and challenges that face single fathers are many and varied, including cultural aspects, gender issues, age, and personal factors such as the capacity as a father to be there for the child. Children may also present with special needs. Many issues which need to be addressed when working with male sole parents are not dissimilar to those experienced by single mothers. However, there are salient issues which appear far more unique to the sole father population. These are the lack of support for male sole parents and the father's self concept. This also has relevance to the current interest generated in men's health, and changes in gender roles. Using case examples, these and other pertinent issues and outcomes for supporting men who are sole parents will be illustrated. INTRODUCTION Today I would like to discuss some of the clinical work with male sole parents that has been done within a community health setting.
