JCR Home Brief History A Brief History of the Castle VII ... The Tunstall Chapel a) History: Built by bishop Cuthbert Tunstall (1530-1559) in the 1540's (c.1542), at the same time as the Tunstall Gallery. When begun, this would have extended little more than two-thirds the length of today's chapel. The original level of the sanctuary can be gauged by the position of the piscina in the south wall, now acessible via a small door in the panelling. Bishop John Cosin (1660-72) began an extension to the chapel to the east; this was completed by Nathaniel, Lord Crewe (1674-1722). The quality of stone work on the extension is remarkably poorer than the original work of Tunstall, and the stone framework of the eastern window is thought to date back to the time of Tunstall, so Crewe may have simply re-used it! b) Contents: On the North Wall, there are two portraits, those of Crewe and Tunstall. Tunstall's portrait (on the Right) is notable as the earliest in the castle's collection. When first painted, he may have been holding a rosary (note the position of his hands), which may have been painted out at a later date. We know that Tunstall's episcopate was a stormy one; as a Catholic (but one who was prepared to accept the Royal supremacy of Henry VIII), he held notable office under Henry VIII, serving for a time as Lord President of the Council of the North. Deprived of his See under Edward VI, he was restored by Mary Tudor, and again removed from his post after the accesion of Elizabeth.

For sake of space these are omitted. Entering the gallery from the Great Hall end one finds To the left: Two chests. The one closer to the door is older c.700 years; the other c.400 years. Both were originally money chests, but were reused later for storing documents (especially since the older chest was severely damaged by fire). The padlock on the elder is only about three hundred years old. There is a legend that the older chest was used as a temporary coffin for St. Cuthbert's body at the time of the Reformation; but this is apocryphal, and probably due to its similarity to a coffin. A large wooden chair, of lightish wood. This is the chair used by the Chancellor at congregation (graduation) ceremonies of the University.

Links The Chichester Family Each page of the account book details how the 'remains' of the money from the rents, that is, minus the money paid out in bills owing for work of various kinds around the estate, was distributed. Each of the following received a quarter share during their life-time. J.C.Nagle Lady Chichester Lady Constable Miss Chichester 1. J.C.Nagle This was Joseph Chichester Nagle, or rather Joseph Chichester, 1792-1880. He had taken his grandmother's name of Nagle on inheriting her estates in Ireland, but unlike the Constable family (below) the name was not passed on to his descendants who remained as Chichester. Joseph was the eldest son of Charles Chichester who was himself second son of John Chichester of Arlington by his second wife, Mary MacDonald. Charles (1770-1837) married Honoria ffrench of Rahasane in Ireland. He was the only remaining member of the Chichester family who remained a Catholic, the rest of them having conformed to the Established Church. Honoria's aunt (or great-aunt?) also called Honoria, and known as 'Nano Nagle', founded the order of Presentation nuns and a group of them are known to have visited Calverleigh. Honoria Nagle's uncles or great-uncles, Joseph Nagle (c1724-1813) and David Nagle (c1719-1800) lived at Calverleigh, though, like the rest of the family this did not mean they remained there all the time as they had other estates especially in Ireland and many of both families had a house in London. David Nagle is commemorated by a large plaque in Calverleigh church. (The exact genealogy of the Nagle family remains to be clarified)

While there, he remained under the patronage of the Christian Brethren, who, with a powerful mixture of religious radicalism and risk-taking entrepreneurship, were profiting handsomely from their book-smuggling trade. Concealed in bales of cloth, sacks of grain, and barrels of wine, the books they smuggled through the English ports were soon being transmitted all along the cloth-trade networks where they were eagerly purchased. Interestingly, this term “Christian Brethren,” the self-designation of these London merchants engaged in importing books by English Protestants on the continent, was also applied to the Lollards and their book-exchanging networks. “So,” notes Dickens, “in men like Monmouth we see the linkage between the international world of Lutheranism and the older English networks of Lollards.” Tyndale and his amanuensis William Roye, an Augustinian friar of Jewish background from Calais, worked together on translating the New Testament using Erasmus’ Greek New Testament, the Vulgate, and Luther’s German Bible as sources. In the spring of 1525, they moved on to Cologne, a center of printing, and by autumn of that year they handed a finished copy to a Cologne printer who managed to print out 3,000 copies of the first eighty

Terms of Use Jehovah's Witnesses United William Tyndale’s Bible for the People IT WAS a day in May in the year 1530. St. Paul’s churchyard in London was crowded with people. Instead of milling around the booksellers’ stalls and exchanging the latest news and gossip as usual, the crowd was visibly agitated. A fire was roaring at the center of the square. But it was no ordinary bonfire. Into the fire, some men were emptying basketfuls of books. It was a book burning! Those were not ordinary books either. They were Bibles—William Tyndale’s "New Testament" and Pentateuch—the first ever to be printed in English. Strangely, those Bibles were being burned at the order of the Bishop of London, Cuthbert Tunstall. In fact, he had spent a considerable sum buying all the copies he could find. What could possibly have been wrong with the Bibles? Why did Tyndale produce them? And why did the authorities go to such lengths to get rid of them? The Bible—A Closed Book In most parts of the world today, it is a relatively simple thing to purchase a Bible. But this has not always been the case. Even in 15th- and early 16th-century England, the Bible was viewed as the property of the church, a book to be read only at public services and explained solely by the priests. What was read, however, was usually from the Latin Bible, which the common people could neither understand nor afford. Thus, what they knew of the Bible was no more than the stories and moral lessons drawn by the clergy.
