John Tukey: A Memory from 1968 After completing my first year as an Assistant Professor at Kansas State University, I presented a contributed paper at the Statistical Meetings in Pittsburgh, PA, in August 1968. The paper was the last paper in one of the last sessions in the meetings. The title of the paper was "A Monte Carlo Study of Fisher's LSD, Tukey's Honest Significant Difference, and a Corresponding Bayes Procedure." The paper included results of a simulation study comparing the three multiple comparisons procedures. The simulation results were provided on a handout available on a table as people entered the meeting room. Ray A. Waller

The digital magazine of InfoVis.net John Wilder Tukey: in memoriam Juan C. Dürsteler [message nº 6] Last July, 25 John Wilder Tukey died at the age of 85. Tukey has been one of the great statistical talents of the XXth century, having a noticeable influence on Information Visualisation. Maybe his best known contribution is the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Nevertheless, Tukey has contributed to modern statistics in many other ways. Among them Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) is one of the most outstanding. His book Exploratory Data Analysis (1977) is the classic reference on the topic. EDA is a philosophy of statistical data exploration basically of graphic nature. For this reason sometimes it is confused with graphical statistics , although EDA goes far beyond this. It's worth looking at the excellent web site on EDA in the statistics manual of the to have an idea of the extension and interest of this development. The interest of EDA, for our purposes, relies on the

Born on 16 June 1915 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Tukey received an ScB in chemistry (1936) and an ScM in chemistry (1937) from Brown University and an MA in mathematics (1938) and a PhD in mathematics (1939) from Princeton University. He joined the faculty of Princeton in 1939 and remained there until his retirement in 1985. In his thesis on abstract topology, Tukey introduced terminology to describe some properties of sets. In mathematical foundations, the Axiom of Choice has two standard alternate forms: Zermelo's Theorem and Tukey's Lemma. The latter is often said to be the useful version of the Axiom of Choice. The introduction of new terminology to capture distinctive concepts would become a Tukey trademark. For example, he coined the contraction "bit" for binary digit. Tukey is credited with the first printed use of the word "software" to refer to computer programs; he observed that the software might well prove to become more valuable than the hardware. The saying that "an approximate solution of the exact problem is often more useful than the exact solution of an approximate problem" has often been attributed to Tukey.

In 1939 he began a teaching career at Princeton which has continued to this day. Beginning as an instructor in Mathematics, he became Professor of Mathematics, Chairman of the Department of Statistics, and is now Professor of Statistics and Donner Professor of Science. Throughout World War II, Tukey participated in projects assigned to Princeton's Fire Control Research Office. This was the beginning of an intense career of public service in fields as diverse as disarmament, the environment, education, health, information retrieval, and statistics. He was a member of Brown University's Board of Fellows. He joined the technical staff at Bell Laboratories in 1945 and is now the Associate Executive Director, Information Sciences Division.

Math Makes Points: John Tukey
John W. Tukey John Tukey is a pioneer in exploratory data analysis. Whenever we take samples of a product or of public opinion, we amass a collection of data points. If there are only two numbers that describe each observation, like the height and weight of students in a class, then that information can be plotted on a graph and we can see if the points "cluster" to reveal some relationship between the two quantities. But in the census data for a large city there may be many different numbers that describe each observation, three or four or more. John Tukey and his colleagues studied the "point clouds" that arise in such situations and manipulated them on a computer screen until patterns emerged that indicated relationships among different variables. To this day, one of the most significant uses of scientific visualization is in the analysis of such patterns in statistical data. Software for rotating point clouds has been developed by Data Description Inc. A site on Exploratory Data Analysis covers many aspects of the topic, as does the
