JOHN TUKEY
John Wilder Tukey was born on 16 June 1915 in Massachusetts, U.S.A. He attended Brown University until 1937 and then obtained a PhD in mathematics at Princeton University. During World War II he worked on statistical problems associated with weapons development (such as the accuracy of range finders on bombers). After the was he researched at Princeton and with Bell Labs, concentrating on the study of complex data. He is largely responsible for the development of Exploratory Data Analysis, although his contributions are found in many areas of statistics. Examples of his collected papers include: The Collected Works of John W. Tukey : Multiple Comparisons 1948-1983 by John W. Tukey, Henry I. Braun (Editor). Configural Polysampling : A Route to Practical Robustness (Wiley Series in Probability and Mathematical Statistics. Probability in Mathematical Stati) by Stephan Morgenthaler, John W. Tukey (Editor). (1991) The Collected Works of John W. Tukey : Time Series, 1949-1964 (Wadsworth Statistics/Probability Series) by John Wilder Tukey, et al. (1984) The Collected Works of John W. Tukey : Philosophy and Principles of Data Analysis : 1965-1986

Born New Bedford, Massachusetts , Tukey obtained a Master's Degree in chemistry from Brown University before moving to Princeton University in to study for his doctorate in mathematics During World War II , Tukey worked at the Fire Control Research Office and collaborated with Samuel Wilks and William Cochran. After the war , he returned to Princeton , dividing his time with Among many contributions to civil society , Tukey served on a committee of the American Statistical Association that produced a report challenging the conclusions of the Kinsey Report Statistical Problems of the Kinsey Report on Sexual Behavior in the Human Male Retiring in , Tukey died in New Brunswick, New Jersey His statistical interests were many and varied. He is particularly remembered for his development, with James Cooley of the Fast Fourier transform algorithm He also contributed to statistical practice and articulated the important distinction between exploratory data analysis and confirmatory data analysis, believing that much statistical methodology placed too great an emphasis on the latter. Though he believed in the utility of separating the two types of analysis, he pointed out that sometimes, especially in

Statistician John W. Tukey dies
PRINCETON, N.J. John Wilder Tukey, an emeritus Princeton professor considered to be one of the most important contributors to modern statistics, died Wednesday. He was 85. Tukey developed many important tools of modern statistics and introduced concepts that were central to the creation of today's telecommunications technologies. In addition to his formidable research achievements, Tukey was known for his penchant for coining terms that reflected new ideas and techniques in the sciences and is credited with introducing the computer science terms "bit" (short for binary digit) and "software." "He probably made more original contributions to statistics than anyone else since World War II," said Frederick Mosteller, retired professor of mathematical statistics at Harvard University. "I believe that the whole country scientifically, industrially, financially is better off because of him and bears evidence of his influence," said retired Princeton Professor John A. Wheeler, who is a major figure in the history of physics and the development of the atomic bomb.

John Tukey 's parents recognised that he had great potential while he was still only a child so the arranged for him to be educated at home rather than in school. This was possible since his parents were themselves teachers. His formal education began only when he entered Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island to study mathematics and chemistry. After being awarded his Master's Degree in chemistry from Brown University, Tukey went to Princeton University in 1937 to study for his doctorate in mathematics. He received his doctorate in 1939 for a dissertation Denumerability in topology which was published in 1940 as Convergence and uniformity in topology . He had already had three papers published before his doctorate was awarded and, in after graduating he was appointed as an instructor at Princeton. External events were to play a major role in the direction of Tukey's career since he joined the Fire Control Research office to contribute towards the war effort. The work here involved statistics and Tukey quickly found the work very much to his liking. There were other statisticians in Princeton, also contributing towards the war effort, in particular

John Tukey died on July 26, 2000 but his influence and contributions will continue. He had more ideas, and greater originality, than seemed possible for a single mind, and he gave those ideas with unique generosity to the people he worked with. In addition, he was equally unique as a personalityan encounter with John Tukey was very likely to be memorable. So many people and so many ideas have been shaped by him, that his complete role is hard to summarize.
