criminals being extracts from the Gloucester Gaol Calendars and Register of Habitual Criminals relating to inhabitants of the parish of Winchcombe Please note that the Gaol Calendar and Register of Habitual Criminals extracts have not been verified by Gloucestershire Record Office , however their reference has been provided after the name of each individual prisoner, to enable you to check against the original material The newspaper reports have been taken mainly from the Gloucester Journal, Gloucestershire Chronicle, Gloucestershire Echo and Cheltenham Journal and Gloucestershire Gazette . Winchcombe Petty Sessions were heard on the last Friday of each month and generally reported in the Echo or the Cheltenham Journal on the following day. The Assizes and Quarter Sessions reports can be found in the Gloucester Journal and Chronicle , which were weekly papers The Gloucester Journal and Gloucestershire Chronicle may be viewed on microfilm at Gloucester City Library and the Gloucestershire Echo and Cheltenham Journal and Gloucestershire Gazette at Cheltenham Reference Library and my thanks go to the staff at both libraries for their continued help Most 'crimes' committed in Winchcombe were fairly minor, such as poaching, drunkeness etc, or consisted of offences which nowadays would not be classed as criminal such as attempting to commit suicide or refusing to have one's children vaccinated. However, I am endeavouring to include them all here even if it is just to reflect on the comparatively harsh system of justice that prevailed in the late 18th and 19th centuries
