Pioneer of Precision
Captain Henry Kater, FRS
Largely forgotten today Captain Henry Kater (1777-1835) conducted pioneering researches in England in the early 19th century to improve the precision of weights and measures. Associated with this was the development of the reversible pendulum for gravity measurements. Kater was actively involved in the Royal Society of London and closely associated with scientists whose names are still familiar today such as Thomas Young, Humphry Davy and William Hyde Wollaston. Sponsored by the National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia, in its fiftieth year.
Who was Captain Kater?
Portrait of Captain Kater
Early 20th century copy by Thea Proctor of original in the National Portrait Gallery, London
(Private Collection) Kater was born in Bristol in 1777, joined the army at 22 and was sent to India where he assisted William Lambton in surveying for the Madras government. After some years he returned to England due to ill health, and was placed on half pay in 1814. Later that year he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. Kater was active as an officer of the Society as well as engaging in its scientific programs. He was especially engaged in precision measurements relating to the standardisation of weights and measures. In connection with this work Kater devised the reversible pendulum. He also made a number contributions to astronomy, including devising a method for graduating circles and the inventing the floating collimator. Kater corresponded widely on technical subjects with numerous British and European scientists. He died in London in 1835.

Instruments of Place
This display has been sponsored by The Institution of Surveyors (NSW Branch) How do we know where we are? This is no simple matter. With the modern satellite-based Global Positioning System, we can define a position on the globe with great accuracy. It has taken centuries of patience and ingenuity to achieve this result. As one hour is equivalent to 15 degrees difference in longitude, it became possible for the first time in the late 18th century for accurate maps to be produced. The quality and precision of the instruments required for determining local time by solar and stellar observations, and for charting reefs and coastlines, mountains and rivers, also improved dramatically in the late 18th century. The settlement of Australia was in part the legacy of these technological improvements.
The Institution of Surveyors
Pillar Mounted Sextant
A large pillar-mounted sextant such as this was used for making accurate equal-altitude observations of the sun or a star for determining local time. By comparing local time with the time of another place such as Greenwich in England, maintained on a marine chronometer, it was possible to determine longitude. Thjis was particularly important in hydrographic surveying. Signed, "

Richard III Review

from The Times, 9/8/95  Steven's Pimlott's production begins as it means to continue: pretty unusually. Out from the rough timbering at the back of the stage limps, lopes, struts and clatters David Troughton's bulky, twisted Richard, and proceeds to slice the famous opening monologue into two distinct halves. The stuff about the winter of discontent becoming glorious summer is for public consumption, fake-cheerfully delivered to the lords and ladies prancing in their finery above him. The bit about determining to be a villian is a baleful confidence put across with a menancing wink and a big, scornful grin. It sounds tricksy, especially as Troughton is dressed in a bizarre, brick-red costume: a sort of embroidered Elizabethan bomber-jacket with Agassi-type shorts and stockings to match, the whole topped off with a jester's cap and bells. But it serves to emphasise how thorough-going a play-actor Crookback is. It also introduces Troughton with a bang, a sign of the manic explosions and psychotic mood-swings to come.  His is a terrific performance and, for those who chronicle the RSC's evolution, a particularly rewarding one. Private Troughton has risen, via Bottom and Caliban and a score of supporting parts, to become King Troughton. His acting has a sort of fierce starkness that distinguishes it from the merely forceful and direct. Add that vast slab-face of his and white-ball eyes he seems to be juggling from somewhere below, and we have a monster to relish.

([from the 1950's British television nostalgia Maigret page
Maigret was first introduced to BBC TV as a part of their Sunday-Night Theatre presentations with ' Maigret and the Lost Life ' (6/12/59), written by Giles Cooper from a 1954 novel by Georges Simenon and produced/directed by Campbell Logan. Basil Sydney played Commissioner Maigret in the 75-minute production, supported by Henry Oscar, Patrick Troughton, Mary Merrall, and Andre Van Gyseghem.
The actual series began in October 1960, the first of what would eventually become four series totalling 51 episodes of 45/55 mins. The BBC had acquired the rights, with Simenon's blessing, against worldwide competition, making it their most ambitious series production to that date. The casting of Rupert Davies as Maigret greatly pleased Simenon at the time; supporting players included Ewen Solon (as his assistant Lucas) and Helen Shingler (as Madame Maigret).).

WHY I LIKE
EDWARD AND MRS SIMPSON ...

Edward Vlll was King of England, not yet crowned, and Wallis Warfield Simpson was a twice divorced American whom he fell in love with. Although he was told he could never have both his Crown and the woman he loved, he believed that his enormous popularity with the people would allow him to do it. This seven part, £1 million drama series from Thames Television faithfully reconstructed the events of the affair between Edward and Mrs Simpson that, in 1936, caused a constitutional crisis and Edward Vlll's eventual abdication. The series covered the period of 1928 (two years before the couple met) and the King's emotional farewell broadcast to the nation in December 1936. Edward and Mrs Simpson , filmed on location in Britain, Kenya and France, depicted a Britain torn apart by class distinction where the poor were subjected to Means Testing and the rich lived a life of luxury. Edward portrayed a public image of deep concern for the poverty stricken and often undertook visits to distressed areas of the country. However, when in 1936 he visited South Wales and said passionately: "Something must be done" - he was just three weeks away from abdication. Edward's reign as King lasted just 325 days, after which he left Portsmouth on a Naval destroyer bound for France. There, some six months later he married Mrs Simpson, and although they were recognised as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, royal status was denied Wallis Simpson, who died in 1986, fourteen years after her husband.

58. DOCTOR WHO REVIEWS:HARTNELL AND TROUGHTON
Watch out for troughton crackingup when Zoe rescues him from the foam outsidethe As usual, Philip Madoc and edward Brayshaw turn-in sterling performances.
http://members.aol.com/hehehedc/docs12.html
DOCTOR WHO - STORY BY STORY WILLIAM HARTNELL An Unearthly Child
Obviously this story is a bit special but in truth, whilst the first episode does it's job of introducing the series very well, it is rather slow and tedious. The remaining episodes however are surprisingly dramatic and violent and feature some nice direction from Waris Hussein. The cave scenes are particularly well lit. RATING: 6/10 Watch out for: Ian's camp staggering around when the TARDIS takes-off is particularly bad. The Daleks
Another story that it is difficult to be objective about because of it's "legendary" status. The Daleks themselves are impressive (although their voices begin to get a little wearing after a while) and the story is certainly ambitious but suffers from a plot that is terribly slow-moving and concentrates too much on the very wet Thals, for whom it is difficult to summon up much sympathy. Fine performance from Hartnell though and Jacqueline Hill and William Russell are already showing signs of being the perfect companions. RATING: 7/10 Watch out for: Susan being pursued through the petrified forest - lots of stagehands slap her with plants while she runs on the spot.
