He became an apprentice mathematical instrument maker in 1770, working for his brother John Troughton in London. In 1779 he became a partner with his brother and they bought The Sign of the Orrey at 136 Fleet Street, London. Troughton soon established himself as the leading maker of instruments in England. Not only did he make great improvements in the design of existing instruments, but he also invented many new instruments. He began his instrument making career with instruments to aid navigation, for example, he designed the 'pillar' sextant, patented in 1788, the dip sector, the marine barometer and the reflecting circle built in 1796. Other instruments which he designed were for use in surveying. He designed the pyrometer, the mountain barometer and the large theodolites which were used in the American Coast Survey of 1815, and base-line measuring apparatus. In fact these instruments were later used in surveys of Ireland and of India.

Shop Sextant by John and Edward Troughton Date: 1797 The sextant takes its name from its shape, a sixth of a circle. Astronomical sextants had been in use since the 16th century but the marine version was developed in about 1757 by Captain John Campbell, with the help of the London instrument maker John Bird. It worked on exactly the same principle as the octant but, having a longer scale, could be used for angles up to 120 degrees. This example has the double frame patented by Edward Troughton in 1788, which provided rigidity without too much weight. It was given as a presentation piece and bears the inscription, 'The Gift of Capt Jas Brisbane to Mr. T.H. Hoskins Master of HM Ship Saturn 1802'. GRADUATION GRADUATION (see also GRADTJATE),the art of dividing straight scales, circular arcs or whole circumferences into any required number of equal parts. It is the most important and difficult part of the work of the mathematical instrument maker, and is required in the construction of most physical, astronomical, nautical and surveying instruments. The art was first practised by clockmakers for cutting the teeth of their wheels at regular intervals; but so long as it was confined to them no particular delicacy or accurate nicety in its performance was required. This only arose when astronomy began to be seriously studied, and the exact position of the heavenly bodies to be determined, which created the necessity for strictly accurate means of measuring linear and angular magnitudes. Then it was seen that graduation was an art which required special talents and training, and the best artists gave great attention to the perfecting of astronomical instruments. Of these may be named Abraham Sharp (1651-1742), John Bird (1709-1776), John Smeaton (1724-1792), Jesse Ramsden (1735-1800), John Troughton, Edward Troughton (1753-1835), William Simms (1793-1860) and Andrew Ross. The first graduated instrument must have been done by the hand and eye alone, whether it was in the form of a straightedge with equal divisions, or a screw or a divided plate; but, once in the possession of one such divided instrument, it was a comparatively easy matter to employ it as a standard. Hence graduation divides itself into two distinct branches, original gradualion and copying, which latter may be done either by the hand or by a machine called a dividing engine. Graduation may therefore be treated under the three heads of original graduation, copying and machine gradualion.
