Otto Toeplitz came from a Jewish family which contained several teachers of mathematics. Both his father, Emil Toeplitz, and his grandfather, Julius Toeplitz, taught mathematics in a Gymnasium and they also both published mathematics papers. Otto was brought up in Breslau and he attended a Gymnasium in that city. His family background made it natural that he also should study mathematics. After completing his secondary education in Breslau, Toeplitz entered the university there to study mathematics. After graduating, he continued with his studies of algebraic geometry at the University of Breslau, being awarded his doctorate in 1905. Hilbert was completing his theory of integral equations . This greatly influenced Toeplitz who began to rework the classical theories of forms on n -dimensional spaces for infinite dimensional spaces. He wrote five papers directly related to

He was also very interested in the history of mathematics. For example he wrote an excellent book on the history of the calculus The Calculus: A Genetic Approach (1963). It was originally published in German in 1949. Excellent antidote to Dawkins and E O Wilson Appleyard writes in a clear concise style and knows his subject extremely well. Although not a scientist he doesn't hesitate to take on the high priests of scientism, asking how many times before science has claimed to have the answer to everything, and how many times before has it been proved wrong. His main thrust however is that lay people need to question scientists and take responsibility for the use of new discoveries. Taking the cloning of Dolly the sheep as his starting point he forecasts the likely effects unquestioning acceptance of the use of such techniques will have on human reproduction; suggesting that without realising it we could be heading for a new type of eugenics, just as immoral as the terrible experiments the world has seen in the past. 8. Learning Module On Reuleaux Triangle

Reuleaux triangle By Daina Taimina and David W. Henderson What is this triangle? If an enormously heavy object has to be moved from one spot to another, it may not be practical to move it on wheels. Instead the object is placed on a flat platform that in turn rests on cylindrical rollers. As the platform is pushed forward, the rollers left behind are picked up and put down in front. An object moved this way over flat horizontal surface does not bob up and down as it rolls along. The reason is that cylindrical rollers have a circular cross section, and a circle is closed curve "with constant width". What does it mean? If a closed convex curve is placed between two parallel lines and the lines are moved together until they touch the curve, the distance between the parallel lines is the curve's "width" in one direction. Because a circle has the same width in all directions, it can be rotated between two parallel lines without altering the distance between the lines. Figure 1 Is the circle the only curve with constant width? Actually there are infinitely many such curves. The simplest noncircular such curve is named the Reuleaux triangle. Mathematicians knew it earlier (some references goes back to Leonard Euler in 18 th century) but Reuleaux was the first to demonstrate its constant width properties.

Reviews Table of Contents What is so special about the number 30? How many colors are needed to color a map? Do the prime numbers go on forever? Are there more whole numbers than even numbers? These and other mathematical puzzles are explored in this delightful book by two eminent mathematicians. Requiring no more background than plane geometry and elementary algebra, this book leads the reader into some of the most fundamental ideas of mathematics, the ideas that make the subject exciting and interesting. Explaining clearly how each problem has arisen and, in some cases, resolved, Hans Rademacher and Otto Toeplitz's deep curiosity for the subject and their outstanding pedagogical talents shine through. Reviews: "A thoroughly enjoyable sampler of fascinating mathematical problems and their solutions." Science "Each chapter is a gem of mathematical exposition.... [The book] will not only stretch the imagination of the amateur, but it will also give pleasure to the sophisticated mathematician."

Toeplitz matrix
In linear algebra , a Toeplitz matrix is a square matrix with constant (negatively sloped) diagonals, i.e; In mathematical terms: These matrices have uses in computer science because it can be shown that the addition of two Toeplitz matrices can be done in O( n time and the matrix multiplication of two Toeplitz matrices can be done in O( n log n ) time. Toeplitz systems of form can be solved by Levinson recursion . The name is after Otto Toeplitz ), a
