Veterinary History
The practice of veterinary medicine probably began in Africa and Asia about 2000 B.C. We find essays on animal diseases in ancient Egyptian literature; and this knowledge was further developed by the Greeks, particularly Hippocrates and Aristotle. Alexander the Great instituted programs to study animal diseases in the late 4th century B.C. The Romans also made important breakthroughs in the study of diseases based upon their work with animals. They advanced ideas of quarantine as a preventative practice. But the first proper college of veterinary medicine was not founded until 1762 when the Ecole Nationale Veterinaire was begun in France.

University of Wisconsin - Madison Whewell, William (b Lancaster, England, 24 May 1794; d Cambridge, England, 6 March 1866) Born the eldest son of a carpenter, William Whewell rose to become Master of Trinity College, Cambridge and a central figure in Victorian science. After attending the grammar school at Heversham in Westmorland, Whewell entered Trinity College, Cambridge and graduated Second Wrangler. He became a Fellow of the College in 1817, took his M.A. degree in 1819, and his D.D. degree in 1844. By the first quarter of the nineteenth century, French mathematicians, led by Pierre-Simon de Laplace and Joseph Lagrange, had established a supremacy over British mathematicians in applying analytical methods to Newtonian physics. Fourier on heat, Ampere on electromagnetism, and Fresnel on light represent only a few of the triumphs of French mathematical physics. In 1819, the year Whewell helped form the Cambridge Philosophical Society, he also published his first textbook, An Elementary Treatise on Mechanics . It was the first English text on applied mathematics that consistently used continental symbolism and became the standard text used by undergraduates at Cambridge. Along with his second textbook

He became an assistant master at a school at Peckham, attending at the same time evening classes at the University College, London . In he obtained a mathematical scholarship and graduated as B.A. at London University, and was awarded the gold medal on the M.A. examination. About this time he became mathematical master at a school at Wimbledon In 1844 he entered St John's College, Cambridge , where he was senior wrangler in 1848, and gained the first Smith's prize and the Burney prize; and in 1849 he was elected to a fellowship, and began his life of college lecturer and private tutor.
