The family of which Mr. TODHUNTER is a worthy scion, was in former years of considerable prominence in the Old Dominion, particularly in Loudoun County, where the grandfather of our subject was born. The family is of Scotch ancestry and for generations belonged to the Orthodox Friends Church. Isaac TODHUNTER married Eleanor JURY, a native of the same county and also of old Quaker stock, but probably of English lineage. In 1805 they left Virginia with their family and emigrated in wagons to Highland County, Ohio, the entire Miami Valley being then a wild waste known as military land. Mr. TODHUNTER secured about one thousand acres in the midst of this heavy timber, his location being determined by a large spring. His grandson says this spring was all that could have induced him to stop, as that part of his possessions was almost worthless, being broken and barren. On this large tract of land six miles from the present site of Leesburg, Isaac TODHUNTER and his wife passed the balance of their lives, dying full of years and clinging to the faith which they had been taught in early life—that of the Friends’ Church. To them were born six sons and three daughters, the second in the family being the father of our subject.

A brief history of the Blencathra Hoxhounds Origins In the early nineteenth century the Keswick Hounds were a trencher-fed pack maintained by local farmers for the purpose of hunting mountain foxes. They were hunted by Joshua Fearon, who became known as a ‘terrible hunter’. In 1826 Mr Crozier senior put the hounds in his own kennels at Gate Ghyll, Threlkeld and hunted them at his own expense, retaining the services of Joshua Fearon as huntsman. They were called ‘Mr Crozier’s Hounds’ or ‘The Threlkeld Hounds’. Mr John Crozier was born in 1822 and was eighteen years old in 1840 when his father handed over to him the Mastership of the hounds, an office which he shared with Joshua Fearon for the first three years. In 1843 he purchased The Riddings estate in Threlkeld and transferred the pack, where it remained until 1945 when new accommodation was built close to the original kennels at Gate Ghyll. Mr Crozier became sole owner and Master, employing ‘Laal’ Isaac Todhunter as huntsman. For thirty years he maintained the hunt at his own expense. John Peel John Peel was born at Park End, Caldbeck in 1776 and died in 1854. In 1829 Sir Frederick Fletcher Vane, who kept a pack of hounds at his Wythop Estate, appointed John Peel as his huntsman. In 1856, two years after Peel’s death, the pack was dispersed. Squire Crozier bought two couples of hounds including Peel’s best and favourite ‘Briton’ whose couple companion was a bitch named ‘Cruel’. Peel’s hounds were used extensively for stud purposes with the best of Mr Crozier’s – justifying to a certain extent the description of the Blencathra as ‘Peel’s old pack’. Other hounds were bought by Sir Wilfrid Lawson of Isel Hall, Master of the Cumberland Foxhounds, which were kennelled at Dalston.

This Week in History Isaac Todhunter Isaac Todhunter in the news Isaac Todhunter November 23 March 1 English mathematician, son of George Todhunter, a Nonconformist minister, was born at Rye. He was educated at Hastings , at which town his mother had opened a school after the death of his father in 1826. He became an assistant master at a school at Peckham, attending at the same time evening classes at the University College, London . In he obtained a mathematical scholarship and graduated as B.A. at London University, and was awarded the gold medal on the M.A. examination. About this time he became mathematical master at a school at Wimbledon In 1844 he entered St John's College, Cambridge , where he was senior wrangler in 1848, and gained the first Smith's prize and the Burney prize; and in 1849 he was elected to a fellowship, and began his life of college lecturer and private tutor. In 1862 he was made a fellow of the Royal Society , and in 1865 a member of the Mathematical Society of London. In 1871 he gained the Adams prize and was elected to the council of the Royal Society. He was elected honorary fellow of St John's in 1874, having resigned his fellowship on his marriage in 1864. In 1880 his eyesight began to fail, and shortly afterwards he was attacked with paralysis.
