Todd Rundgren and Utopia Reviews on this page: Nazz Runt The Ballad Of Todd Rundgren Something/Anything? ... XTC to Jill Sobule - but he's a musical polymath. Plays guitar, keyboards, horns, who knows what else; has a huge vocal range; writes prolifically; and at least on most of his early records, proves himself with a dead-on command of melody, harmony, and arrangement. His magical early 70s records are shockingly good, combining Carole King -like melodies, Brian Wilson -like harmonies, Jimi Hendrix -like guitar playing, and late 60s Beatles -like production. Problem is, Rundgren has a habit of derailing his career with ambitious, idiosyncratic production experiments that antagonize the critics and confuse his fans. Meanwhile, his lengthy digression with the somewhat faceless pop-rock group Utopia resulted in a lot of entertaining albums, but not a lot of commercial success, locking him ever more tightly into the image of a cult star. Despite all the missed opportunities, Rundgren and Utopia's catalogs are well worth exploring. His first three records were as the leader of Philadelphia's mid-tempo late 60s rockers the Nazz, a band that didn't have a very distinct identity but did make some good music. During the early 70s he produced what many consider his best solo work, successfully keeping up with that era's phenomenal explosion of pop textures and styles. By the mid-70s he'd formed Utopia, which eventually stabilized its composition around four virtuoso musicians who ended up splitting songwriting and singing responsibilities. Rundgren continued putting out self-written/performed/produced solo albums on a regular basis, slowing down only when Utopia collapsed in the mid-80s after failing to gain a consistent mass audience. Over the past decade and a half he's occasionally ventured forth with a "comeback" album, but from what I've heard none of these efforts really match his best records from the 70s.

THE LEGEND(S) OF JOHN TODD (reprint from Feb. 2, 1979 Christianity Today EDITORIAL: THE BEWITCHING OF THE CHURCHES It is an embarrassment to have to write about the John Todd phenomenon (see page 38). Several Christian leaders who travel the nation nonetheless tell us that Todd is the most talked-about topic of these days. Letters continually land on editorial desks, asking in effect, "Is what John Todd is saying true?" No, it is not. Todd was not at the pinacle of a witches' conspiracy for global conquest as he claims to have been. He has not launched key organizations of the charismatic movement or the modern gospel music industry by signing a few checks for them from witch headquarters. He has not been to many of the places (like Duke University and Viet Nam) he says he has been. His memory is fitful. He cannot even seem to remember his right age from one reporter to the next. Important details of the story he tells change from town to town. In 1973 he was a hero among certain charismatics. By 1978 he was well received as a supposedly converted witch by certain strongly anti-charismatic fundamentalists. Among them he tended to keep quiet about his former charismatic ties. Todd has told many people about his conversion under Baptist auspices in San Antonio in 1972, but he has not breathed a word about how as early as 1968 he was a penniless storefront preacher in Phoenix who left trinitarian Pentecostalism for the Jesus Only brand. Instead he seems to indicate to his modern-day followers than in the sixties he was up to his amulet in witchly affairs.

Return to Home Unit 5 Lesson 1 John B. S. Todd and Gabriel Renville In 1850, few white people lived in South Dakota. The grassy prairies went on for miles. They had never been plowed. Only Sioux (Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota) Indians and fur traders lived here. To others, it was the frontier John B. S. Todd and the Making of Dakota Territory John B. S. Todd came to Dakota in 1855. He was a soldier with General William S. Harney. Todd liked what he saw here. He started a trading post. He sold supplies to soldiers at Fort Randall. Todd’s company was named Frost, Todd and Company. Todd saw that he could make more money if there were farms on the prairie. First, the Indians had to say it was okay for people to live in Dakota. Todd helped the Yankton Nakotas negotiate a treaty (you learned about this in Unit 4). The treaty opened part of eastern South Dakota to American settlers. The land was between the Big Sioux River and the Missouri River. Todd’s company bought some of the land. Then he sold it to farmers. He also started the town of Yankton . More settlers would come if the land were part of the United States. First it had to be a territory. Todd got settlers to sign a paper. The paper asked the government to make Dakota Territory. Todd was the cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln. She was the wife of President Abraham Lincoln. This relationship may have been why the president was willing to talk to Congress. He asked them to make Dakota Territory. The year was 1861. Todd went to Washington, D.C., to talk for the settlers. He also helped to make Yankton the capital.

It is believed to contain a substantial percentage of an eventual full listing, but has not been scoured for completeness or organized into sections based on individual works. It should prove informative nonetheless. Discographic material below has been collected to this stage with substantial help from Pierre-F. Roberge. Todd M. McComb Biography Dunstaple may have traveled to Burgundy before 1427, and came to be identified with the adoption of thirds-based harmonies on the Continent. Today it is difficult to separate his work from such contemporaries as Lionel Power (c.1380-1445), and indeed the two surviving mass cycles thought to be by Dunstaple may be by Power instead. Dunstaple and his English contemporaries are, however, thoroughly associated with the first examples of the cantus firmus Dunstaple left at least 52 attributed works, although there continues to be confusion between his work and that of Power and others.
