Quotations by Edward Charles Titchmarsh
Perhaps the most surprising thing about mathematics is that it is so surprising. The rules which we make up at the beginning seem ordinary and inevitable, but it is impossible to foresee their consequences. These have only been found out by long study, extending over many centuries. Much of our knowledge is due to a comparatively few great mathematicians such as Newton, Euler, Gauss, or Riemann; few careers can have been more satisfying than theirs. They have contributed something to human thought even more lasting than great literature, since it is independent of language.
N Rose Mathematical Maxims and Minims (Raleigh N C 1988). It can be of no practical use to know that is irrational, but if we can know, it surely would be intolerable not to know.
N Rose Mathematical Maxims and Minims (Raleigh N C 1988). I met a man once who told me that far from believing in the square root of minus one, he didn't believe in minus one. This is at any rate a consistent attitude. There are certainly people who regard 2 as something perfectly obvious but jib at -1. This is because they think they can visualise the former as something in physical space but not the latter. Actually

JANUARY 18 - BIRTHS Ray Dolby Born 18 Jan 1933
Physicist, engineer , and inventor of the Dolby Noise Reduction Systems. Dolby is famous for innovations ranging from the high-quality cassettes we use in our car stereos to the latest digital surround sound in movie theaters. As a high school student he went to work part time for Ampex Corporation. While still in college, he joined the small team of Ampex engineers dedicated to inventing the world's first practical video tape recorder, the Ampex VTR (1956). Dolby founded his own company, Dolby Laboratories, in 1965. His first development was Dolby A-type noise reduction, an audio compression and expansion which dramatically reduced background hiss in professional tape recording with no discernible side-effects. Belding H. Scribner
(source)
Born 18 Jan 1921; died 19 Jun 2003.
Dr. Belding Hibbard Scribner was an American physician who invented the Scribner shunt, making long-term kidney dialysis possible. The dialysis machine, which filters the blood of kidney disease patients, as originally developed by Dr. Willem J. Kolff, used glass tubes that were inserted into veins and arteries. These were painful and could not be used indefinitely because of progressive damage to the blood vessels. Scribner's key contribution (1960) was the shunt , a device implanted in a patient that allowed doctors to tap into their blood vessels and keep them on dialysis indefinitely. Scribner also led a team that developed the "artificial gut," a method using a catheter to provide nourishment to patients who have lost their stomachs and intestines.

APRIL 11 - BIRTHS Sir Frank Whittle
(source)
Born 11 Apr 1907; died 8 Aug 1996.
English aviation engineer and pilot who was a pioneer in the field of jet propulsion, which he used to develop aircraft that could fly at faster speeds and higher altitudes than piston-engine propeller airplanes of the 1920s. While he was at Cranwell, still only 21 years of age, Whittle began to consider the possibilities of jet propulsion as applied to aircraft. By 1930, he had designed and patented a jet aircraft engine. After 11 years, Whittle's engine, tested and modified, successfully powered a Gloster-Whittle E.28/39 , on a historic 17-min flight on 15 May 1941. Design work continued, and by the end of WW II, the Gloster Meteor became the RAF's first jet fighter that would fly 200-mph faster than the RAF's Spitfires and Hurricanes.
"Genesis of the Jet: Frank Whittle and the Invention of the Jet Engine"
by John Golley Donald Menzel
(source)
Born 11 Apr 1901; died 14 Dec 1976.
Donald H(oward) Menzel was an American astronomer best known for his arguments against the existance of extraterrestrial UFO's. Menzel was one of the first practitioners of theoretical astrophysics in the United States and pioneered the application of quantum mechanics to astronomical spectroscopy. An authority on the sun's chromosphere, he discovered with J. C. Boyce (1933) that the sun's corona contains oxygen. With W. W. Salisbury he made (1941) the first of the calculations that led to radio contact with the moon in 1946. He supervised the assignment of names to newly discovered lunar features.

John William Nicholson (1881-1955)
Edward Charles Titchmarsh (1899-1963)
Edward Titchmarsh matriculated in 1917, and crowned a glittering undergraduate career by winning the Senior Mathematical Prize. In 1931 he succeeded G.H. Hardy as Savilian Professor of Geometry. Titchmarsh is best known for his work in analysis, particularly his books on Fourier integrals The Theory of functions The Riemann Zeta function , and the two-volume Eigenfunction expansions . In this last mentioned treatise he expounded his mathematically rigorous treatment of several quantum mechanical sytems. For example, it was Titchmarsh who first proved that the spectrum of a hydrogen atom in a uniform electric field is continuous. Further information about Titchmarsh
Lancelot Stephen Bosanquet (1903-1984)
After leaving at Balliol, Bosanquet moved to London where he became in succession, a Reader and then a Professor. He worked mainly on analysis, making important contributions to integration theory, harmonic analysis, Tauberian theorems, inequalities, and convexity theory. Further information about Bosanquet
Tan Sri Sir Alexander Oppenheim (1903-1997)
After graduating from Balliol Alexander Oppenheim worked first with G.H. Hardy in Oxford, and then with Dickson in Chicago. Oppenheim's conjectures stimulated enormous interest over more than half a century, and were eventually settled by Gel'fand. They had further strong influence on the work of Gregory Margulis for which he received the Fields Medal in 1978. After lecturing at Edinburgh, Oppenheim became Professor of Mathematics at Raffles College, Singapore, where he was taking prisoner by the advancing Japanese army in 1942. He taught and gave chess displays in the prison camps in Thailand, and attributed his survival to his ability to immerse himself in mathematics. After the war, and he held chairs successively at the Universities of Malaysia, Reading, Ghana and Benin.
