Journalist Andrei Babitski in court
The legal case against the journalist Andrei Babitski, of the Russian Radio Station Svoboda, associated with RFE (Radio Free Europe) restarted yesterday. He is accused of having been part of a group of armed bandits.
He claims that he is being victimised for having written reports criticising the Russian campaign in Chechnya.
Imprisoned in Grozny in January, exchanged for captured Russian soldiers, arrested again in February for using a false passport, this journalist has lived a rocambolesque year.
Russian Envoy returns from Yugoslavia with empty hands
Neither of the parties in the Yugoslav election officially replied to the initiative of President Putin, although the opposition candidate awaits an official invitation…
Vladimir Tchijov, Russia’s Balkans envoy, returned to Russia yesterday without any firm agreements from either of the protagonists in Yugoslavia’s Presidential elections of 24th September, President Slobodan Milosevic or opposition Candidate Vladimir Kostunica, to go to Moscow to discuss the election process and a resolution to its problems.
Also noteworthy is the refusal of both parties to recognize US attempts to mediate.

VIKTOR TIKHONOV REFUSED TO TELL TO THE COURT ABOUT HIS ATTEMPT AT AMAN TULEEV
Today, at the Novosibirsk regional court’s sitting, Viktor Tikhonov accused of attempt at Kemerovo governor Aman Tuleev refused to give evidences. He alleged his bad health condition. By the court’s decision, ambulance was called to examine the defendant. The doctor certified the defendant had troubles with circulation of the blood in his brain. In this connection the trial was postponed till September 7. Today Viktor Tikhonov must be questioned.
The day before the defendant did not admitted the accusation of “attempt at statesman’s life”. Though earlier he acknowledged his guilt. In the doom it is fixed, that 46-year-old Viktor Tikhonov arrested in August of last year testified against himself.
He reported ‘MIKOM’ company’s head Mikhail Zhivilo had ordered the governor’s murder, because Aman Tuleev hindered his business. Viktor Tikhonov’s alder brother, Olympic champion Alexandr Tikhonov acquainted him with the businessman. Viktor Tikhonov had just to find killers and to give over the money received from the customer. Viktor Tikhonov admitted he had performed the order: he found a killer and gave over to him 179 thousand dollars. The total sum must be 330 thousand dollars, though the killer spent the greater part of money and informed FSB (Federal Security Service) about attempt to be prepared.

THE STATISTICS
Many summaries have been made about the wonderful Israeli League of 2000-01, both official and unofficial. One of the ways to sum up the season, though undoubtedly not complete and perfect, is to look upon the bare facts. Who was the best, who played well both home and away, who scored most, etc. I tried to make these summaries as short and interesting as possible, to touch every relevant and interesting point that can explain the relegation or the great success. Unfortunately, as this year I spent large parts of time in Germany, and therefore was away from the real Israeli action, the summaries lack the certain information (keepers, goal passes, the best, etc.) they possessed in the last years; still, I think it's better to have at least something than nothing at all. So, don't judge me too severely, would you NOTE: I would like to thank my foreign subscribers who fixed my spelling in some of the foreign names. Here I'll try to bring the names of the foreign players in the most correct spelling possible.

WC'98 Preliminaries. Group 5. Ramat-Gan, Israel. 09/10/1996. Israel - Russia 1:1 (0:0). 40 years ago, Israel and Russia (then - still the Soviet Union) had their only opportunity to meet in two official games, the Melbourne'56 Olympic games preliminaries. It ended 5:0 to Russia in Moscow and 2:1 to Russia in Ramat-Gan; and in Israel, the 2nd game was considered for a long time nearly as glorious as an historic victory, due to the header of Nakhum Stelmakh to land in the net of the fabulous Lev Yashin. One of the stories says that 70,000 people (!) were then in Ramat-Gan. New world, new standards... 40 years have passed, and yesterday half a number of spectators in Ramat-Gan saw the Israeli home draw 1:1 against Russia with a mixed feeling. On one hand, Russia was a better team, and its pressure during the last minutes of play was terrible and luckily for us didn't result in a goal; but on the other hand, Israel seemed capable of preserving the advantage gained with a tremendous shot of Gadi Brumer. Just 10 minutes more to hold on... The Israeli team faced the better team, and it was felt; and here a lot of warm words should be said for our guys. Rafi Cohen in the net made hardly any mistake, forgetting about his League troubles. Eyal Berkovich wasn't bad at all, and Amir Shelakh did his job in defence. Felix Halfon and David Amsalem saved a certain goal each, and on the other side, Haim Revivo and Ronen Harazi managed to create several good moments against the cool Russian defence (though I personally waited for more from those two). Alon Hazan and Avi Nimni were effective and helped to a defence. But a head above everybody, there were Tal Banin and Gadi Brumer. Banin was, as usual, the brain and the spirit of any Israeli move, and Brumer, returning to the National squad after an injury, made the difference in the defence; and in addition, he was the man to bring Israel the point, scoring with a superb free kick that was shown again and again in Europe.

Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

Failed scoring chances lead to 2-0 setback to Russia in Moscow.
MOSCOW (Wednesday, April 26, 2000) Russia may have failed to qualify for the 2000 European Championships, but the team was able to take a break from the inevitable torrent of criticism by blanking the United States tonight 2-0 behind goals by Igor Titov and Valery Karpin at Dynamo Stadium. Russia improved to 3-0-1 against the U.S., which wasted several first-half scoring opportunities and falling to 3-1-3 this year. "We were missing some of our strikers and a couple of other good players, but that's not an excuse," U.S. coach Bruce Arena told Associated Press. Russia failed qualify for Euro 2000 when it allowed an 88th minute goal at home to Ukraine in its final qualifying match. Titov put Russia ahead to stay 1-0 in the 63rd minute, taking a pass from his Moscow Spartak club teammate Andrei Tikhonov for a free run into the left side of the penalty area. Titov stepped left around goalkeeper Kasey Keller and fired into an unattended net.

Russian Figure Skating Championships - 2004
Highlights
January 13, 2004
The 2004 Russian Figure Skating Championships were held Jan 7-11 at the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Men
In the men's event, Evgeni Plushenko (St. Petersburg) didn't have to fear his competitors as they all struggled. He alone put out two splendid performances to claim his fifth national title as well as a lot of 6.0s. Ilia Klimkin (Moscow) won his second silver while Andrei Griazev (Moscow) won the bronze - his first senior national medal. Griazev, a student of Tatiana Tarasova (and Alexei Yagudin), reeled off a huge triple Axel-double toe combination, but the landing was off balance. He executed a triple flip and finished with Yagudinesque footwork followed by a double Axel which earned him marks ranging from 5.2 to 5.6 for a third place finish after the short. Klimkin started out well with a solid short program that contained a triple Axel-double toeloop combination as well as an effortless looking solo quad toeloop. His performance to Swan Lake earned marks ranging from 5.5 to 5.8, for a second place finish after the short.
