I will discuss progress in understanding the geometry of foliations, particularly in dimension 3, in connection with the program of trying to reconcile and combine several approaches toward three-dimensional topology. A main goal of the program is to find a construction for a geometric decomposition for a 3-manifold based on a taut foliation, an essential lamination, or a tight contact structure. An important related goal is to analyze how these structures relate to a hyperbolic structure. More specifically, I will touch on the following points, discussing some of this in depth. Some of this is quite new, and subject to change before the talk.
  • The pocket principal. By looking at diffusion along the leaves of a foliation (and/or symmetric random walks on groups or pseudo-groups of homeomorphisms), one finds that nearby leaves of a codimension-one foliation mostly converge at infinity, in a sense that can be made precise. A good image is that nearby leaves in the universal cover form pockets, with openings that are small compared to the seams that join them.
  • The geodesic flow of leaves. It is known that foliations with 2-dimensional leaves, under reasonable general circumstances, have Riemannian metrics which are negatively-curved on each leaf. The pocket principal gives a way to compare geodesic flows on different leaves.

Bill Thurston studied at New College, Sarasota, Florida. He received his B.S. from there in 1967 and moved to the University of California at Berkeley to undertake research under Morris Hirsch's and Stephen Smale 's supervision. He was awarded his doctorate in 1972 for a thesis entitled Foliations of 3- manifolds which are circle bundles. This work showed the existence of compact leaves in foliations of 3-dimensional manifolds. After completing his Ph.D., Thurston spent the academic year 1972-73 at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. Then, in 1973, he was appointed an assistant professor of mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1974 he was appointed professor of mathematics at Princeton University. Throughout this period Thurston worked on foliations. Lawson ([5]) sums up this work:- It is evident that Thurston's contributions to the field of foliations are of considerable depth. However, what sets them apart is their marvellous originality. This is also true of his subsequent work on

I think mathematics is a vast territory. The outskirts of mathematics are the outskirts of mathematical civilization. There are certain subjects that people learn about and gather together. Then there is a sort of inevitable development in those fields. You get to the point where a certain theorem is bound to be proved, independent of any particular individual, because it is just in the path of development.

Welding dreams design By Nicole Gagnon
    For The Sun
    • Port Townsend's Bill Thurston-More has nurtured a passion for architectural design. His young life could have easily ended where it began in the concrete labyrinth of central New Jersey, but for Port Townsend's Bill Thurston-More, this hardly registers a flicker of concern. Thurston-More, creator of hand-forged metal furniture and owner of Thurston-More Designs, has nurtured a passion for architectural design that has defied every attempt to quell it. Thurston-More grew up in what he describes as "an experiment" in housing and education. He lived in the largest housing development of its time with apartments so identical that, according to Thurston-More, children would often run into their neighbors' homes by mistake. His school was designed without windows and classes were never held out of doors. Sealed in a world of cement and steel, he remembered feeling isolated from community and especially nature. "The whole passion for design is deeply rooted in nature - especially how I see the world, because I was so disconnected from it," Thurston-More says. Though he was hooked on architecture from early childhood, the sterile environment disheartened him.

The quickest way to become an experienced coach. You thought you were going to sign your kid up for the local youth league. Now, here you are, a newly appointed coach. Part of the successful Baffled Parent's series, Coaching Youth Baseball all your players Work with girls and boys Match your drills and strategies to age and ability Make it fun and rewarding Be the coach you never had Generate enthusiasm Improve your players and your team Coaching Youth Baseball also helps novice coaches determine: How to get uniforms and arrange for practice time What drills are best to teach basic skills like catching, throwing, and batting Some of the safety concerns specific to baseball The 5 tips to being a good coach And much more!
    Synopsis
So you thought you were just going to drop him off at practice? This is the third of Ragged Mountain Press's Baffled Parent's Series (with Coaching Youth Basketball and Coaching Youth Soccer). Coaching Youth Baseball is written for the unprepared parent who is unwittingly thrust into the role of coaching his or her 8- to 12-year-old child's baseball team. It provides the fundamentals a new coach needs to control, motivate, and encourage a disparate group of boys and girls varying skills and dispositions. It address both broad organizational issues (How do I get uniforms or arrange for practice time?) and more focused specifics (What do I do at the first practice? How do I determine a child's position? What drills are best to teach basic skills like catching, throwing, and hitting? What about safety concerns?). The text allows a coach to match drills to his or her players' skills and motivationsand focuses on teaching kids

    Research Area: Topology
Bill Thurston is a topologist, though his work impinges on many other areas of mathematics. He has discovered unexpected links between topology, hyperbolic geometry, and complex analysis. Highlights of his career include his classification of foliations of codimension greater than one, his classification of surface automorphisms, his hyperbolization theorem in three-dimensional topology, and the theories of automatic groups and confoliations. Thurston has also made fundamental contributions to the theory of symplectic and contact manifolds, dynamics of surface diffeomorphisms, and the combinatorics of rational maps. His current research includes random 3-manifolds and relations of knot theory to computational complexity. His main interest remains his geometrization conjecture, a far-reaching proposed generalization of his hyperpolization theorem.

Joe Thurston Los Angeles infield prospect Joe Thurston is having a stellar season for the Dodgers' Las Vegas AAA affiliate, batting .332 and stealing 15 bases through the first three and a half months of the season. Los Angeles' prospective second baseman of the future has even added a little power to his arsenal this year, with 24 doubles, seven triples and eight homeruns to date. Yet one can't help but observe that the total of Thurston's game exceeds the sum of the individual parts. It's the intangibles that mark the 22-year-old left-handed hitter as a special kind of player. "I feel like I go out there and work hard," commented Thurston about the extras he brings to the game, "whether its bunting, getting someone over, getting on base or getting someone out on defense."

Paul Nyman/Max Ratofor VIDEO ANALYSIS OF THE PITCHING MOTION - CHECK POINTS FOR COACHES By Bill Thurston Head Baseball Coach, Amherst College Amherst, MA and Glenn Fleisig, Phd., Director of Research Biomechanical Engineer American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), Birmingham, AL. Mark Wohlers, the hard throwing relief pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, has been video analyzed at the ASMI lab at 500 frames a second. We will use Mark as a model to identify check points and techniques to focus on during the pitching sequence. Throwing a ball is one of the fastest known human actions and is very difficult to study only using the naked eye. For a coach, the use of video analysis, even video taped with a regular camcorder and viewed via a 4 head VCR, is a very effective way to study the specific techniques of the pitching motion.
