Axel Thue was the son of Niels Thue and Nicoline Cathinka Eger. He studied at Voss's school in Oslo, where he showed a great interest in physics, completing his studies there in 1883. He then enrolled at the University of Oslo graduating in 1889. He went to Leipzig in 1890 and spent a year studying under Lie . However, [1]:- ... his works do not reveal Lie 's influence, probably because of Thue's inability to follow anyone else's line of thought. He also spent a while in Berlin where he attended lectures by Helmholtz Fuchs and Kronecker . Back in Olso, Thue held a scholarship in mathematics from 1891 to 1894. On 6 July 1894 he married Lucie Collett Lund who was ten years younger than Thue. Then Thue was appointed to Trondheim Technical College where he worked from 1894 until 1903. He was appointed as professor of applied mathematics at Oslo University in 1903. He held this post until his death in 1922. In 1909 he produced an important paper, published in

Axel Thue
Acta Mathematica from 1916-1922. Thue is sometimes known as the "father of formal languages". He was the first to investigate the problem of finding an infinite sequence over a finite alphabet that did not contain any occurrences of adjacent identical blocks, a property today known as squarefreeness . Unfortunately, because his papers on repetitions in words were published in a relatively obscure Scandinavian journal, his work was forgotten and later rediscovered by many writers, such as Max Euwe and Marston Morse. However, Gustav Hedlund later rediscovered Thue's contribution and popularized it. Thue also made fundamental contributions to number theory (particularly transcendence theory). Thue died in Oslo, Norway, on March 7, 1922.

    Thue-Morse L -system
As our next example of an L -system, we introduce the Thue-Morse system: The sequence of generations starts as follows: a ab abba abbabaab abbabaabbaababba Table 4: Thue-Morse Generations The number of organisms clearly doubles each generation, so that . The first question we might ask is what is the global process that emerges, if any. To answer this question, we first observe that generation does appear at the beginning of . If we look at what follows, we eventually conclude that it resembles , except that each a has been replaced by a b and each b has been replaced by an a . For any word w in , we define R w ) to be the mirror image word where we replace a by b and b by a . Then the global process is As a challenge, we ask the reader to supply a proof. (It's very similar to what one writes down for the Fibonacci process; there is one extra key point.) Since is the beginning of , this L -system produces in the limit an infinite sequence of a 's and b 's that begins: This sequence has many interesting properties and is known as the Thue-Morse sequence . Axel Thue came up with it in 1912 [ ] in his study of formal languages (not the term he used then). Marston Morse rediscovered the same sequence in 1917 [

Abstract: Many of Axel Thue's ideas have been influential in theoretical computer science. In particular, Thue systems, semi-Thue systems and his work on the combinatorics of words are well-known. Here we consider his 1910 paper which contains many notions and ideas about trees, term rewriting and word problems which are surprisingly modern and have later come to play important roles in mathematics, logic, and computer science. A Rant Concerning the Number 3

    Starting thoughts...
This rant has to do with the number 3. Let me begin by telling a story so you can see where my interest in the number 3 comes from. When I was a physics undergraduate student, I used to watch and drool over the studies of a friend of mine who was in the Master's program. I learned to really appreciate my studies by seeing how he was applying the basics of what I was learning to solving really neat problems. One Friday I wandered into the lab where three of them were grinding through the solution of some complex electromagnetic equations. The solution was so complex that they had divided the work up among themselves and had been busy filling page after page of large computer printout paper abscounded from the computer center (this was back in 1970, mind you...). Well it was a sight for a young impressionable lad such as myself to watch. I sat there for hours just watching them grind through their solutions. I was impressed. But, soon I heard the call of the local pub and wandered off to play. Late Sunday afternoon, I went back to see how they were doing. Much to my surprise, they were all jumping up and down and yelling and screaming. Crumpled computer paper was
