Relacja z Mistrzostw Polski Po³udniowej W dniach 4-6.10 odby³y siê w Ochabach Mistrzostwa Polski Po³udniowej w kategoriach juniorów i seniorów. W ka¿dej z kategorii mogli¶my ogl±daæ ponad 50 przejazdów. Niestety pogoda - zw³aszcza podczas niedzielnego fina³u - nie dopisa³a. B³otniste i ¶liskie pod³o¿e parkuru by³o przyczyn± wielu b³êdów. W tych warunkach najlepiej poradzili sobie zawodnicy gospodarzy: w kategorii juniorów z³oty medal wywalczy³ obroñca tytu³u £ukasz Matla z Banit± i Aresem, a w kategorii seniorów zwyciê¿y³ Jan Mleczko dosiadaj±cy koni Sioux i Asterix.
Nasz klub reprezentowa³a Magdalena Podsiad³y z Olszynem. By³ to pierwszy start tej pary w zawodach pozaregionalnych. Wyjazd nie by³by mo¿liwy gdyby nie olbrzymi wk³ad pracy trenera pana Jacka Pêkalskiego. Pi±tkowy parkur by³ stosunkowo ³atwy. Mogli¶my ogl±daæ 21 czystych przejazdów. Prowadzenie obj±³, od pocz±tku rewelacyjnie je¿d¿±cy, £ukasz Matla. Zanotowa³ on dwa czyste przejazdy i dodatkowo na Banicie wygra³ konkurs deklasuj±c rywali o 18 sekund! B³±d naszej zawodniczki w szeregu spowodowa³ zrzutkê Olszyna i Magda maj±c na koncie 4pkt karne zajê³a dopiero 22 miejsce.
Seniorzy rozpoczêli rywalizacjê konkursem klasy C szybko¶ci. Wygra³ go junior - syn trenera kadry juniorów i m³odych je¼d¼ców Rudolfa Mruga³y - Mateusz Mruga³a. Mateusz startowa³ na dwóch koniach: Wedze i Rapsodie van't Hof Z.

Village of Thomson
The Village of Thomson, one of the earliest communities in Carlton County was first settled in 1869. Beginning in 1870 until 1889, Thomson served as the county seat.

Source: Pictorial History of Carlton County
After some court battles, the county seat moved to North Pacific Junction, now the town of Carlton Three sawmills and the St. Louis River Slate and Brick Co. produced lumber and bricks in the town. The A.M. Miller sawmill cut ten million board feet of lumber annually between 1872 and 1891. The brick company made eight to ten million bricks a year from ground slate. One theory holds that Thomson was named for David Thompson. Thompson, a Canadian, mapped the St. Louis River and much of northeastern Minnesota in 1825. This theory requires an alternate spelling of his name dropping the letter p Another theory suggests that Jay Cooke named the railroad junction which became the village of Thomson for Edgar Thomson, president of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He invested in a number of Cook's Minnesota projects. He also served as director of the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1870 the Northern Pacific began building westward just outside of Thomson. (1) A reporter for the Duluth Minnesotan described the work camp located at Thomson in February 1870: "The crowd of citizens who visited the Dalles of the St. Louis River, en route to the Northern Pacific Railway Opening, were agreeably disappointed in the aspect of things at that locality. Since the year 1870 commenced, an amount of hard work has been done there and thereabouts, which let daylight in on those pine woods, and has divested them materially of their heretofore wilderness character. That counter demonstrations, the indefatigable, reliable, hospitable and whole-souled Gilbert Graham, having completed his Sevastopol contract on fast time, he on the 7th of January moved himself and men to his other three sections embracing the line of the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad a mile beyond the St. Louis River and two miles this side of it. This included the preparation of the depot grounds and the erection of the sundry large stone culverts and the stone piers of the two bridges which are to span the St. Louis River at Slate Island."

VIRGIL GARNETT THOMSON
A s America celebrates the centenary of Virgil Thomson's birth in 1896 with revivals of his works and a new biography in preparation, there is increasing awareness of what a musician's musician this composer and critic truly was. As a composer he created over 150 compositions which skillfully melded indigenous and cosmopolitan influences, while as a writer and lecturer, he devoted himself energetically to elevating musical standards and taste, to creating a wider public for classical music, and to creating a legacy of some of the most elegant, urbane, and intelligent prose that modern music journalism has witnessed.
Returning to Harvard in 1922, he took his degree in 1923. For the next three years he commuted between New York and Boston where he served as organist for the King's Chapel, and he began to contribute serious music journalism to publications like Mencken's American Mercury and Vanity Fair. It was not long, however, before Europe would once again exert its siren call, and for the next sixteen years he would cross the Atlantic frequently. In 1927 he journeyed to Spain to collaborate with Gertrude Stein on their opera, FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS, which they completed in 1928. That same year also produced his SYMPHONY ON A HYMN TUNE, as well as the first of a genre he can be credited with inventing: the musical portrait. FOUR SAINTS received its premiere in Hartford in 1934 with an all-black cast in an extraordinary visual production with choreography by Frederick Ashton. This was followed by a second collaboration with Stein, based on the life of suffragette Susan B. Anthony, THE MOTHER OF US ALL, which premiered in 1946 shortly before Stein's death. In the intervening years Thomson created film and ballet scores as well as incidental music for the theatre and visited Paris until the Nazi occupation forced him to flee. Back in New York in 1940, he settled into his final home, The Chelsea Hotel, and accepted a job as music critic for the Herald Tribune, which he retained until 1954. After his resignation from the paper he devoted himself to a third opera, LORD BYRON, and to writing his autobiography in 1966 and his book AMERICAN MUSIC SINCE 1910 in 1971.

  • 180. Alexander Greek Thomson - Antiquity Rediscovered
A guide to thomson's architectural work in Glasgow by Gerry Blaikie, part of his Glasgow and Edinburgh A trail of two cities, illustrated with his own drawings of buildings.
    http://www.scotcities.com/greekthomson.htm
    ALEXANDER GREEK THOMSON
    ANTIQUITY REDISCOVERED
Welcome to this celebration of the Glasgow architecture of Alexander Thomson. Many of the images have been featured in my my other architectural explorations which have been arranged by location rather than by individual architects. I have now put all the illustrations in one place as a tribute to one of Scotland's greatest architects. Alexander Thomson Alexander Thomson was born at Balfron in Stirlingshire in 1817.
He spent his working life as an architect in and around Glasgow until his death in 1875. He created some of the most unique secular and ecclesiastical buildings of the Victorian era, blending neo-classical conventionality with Egyptian and oriental themes to produce buildings which have few equals anywhere when it comes to sheer originality.
Caledonia Road Church, Gorbals Caledonia Road Church, Gorbals, was Alexander Thomson's first church in the city, built in 1857. It has an unconventional asymmetric layout which follows the edges of the surrounding roads. It is built in an unusual combination of styles with ancient Greek and provincial Italian elements placed side by side.
The depopulation of the Gorbals left the church without a congregation by 1962. It then was abandoned to dereliction until it was severely damaged by fire in 1965.
