Paper $20.00tx 0-226-79760-0 Fall 1994 Traditional ecological approaches to species evolution have frequently studied too few species, relatively small areas, and relatively short time spans. In The Coevolutionary Process, John N. Thompson advances a new conceptual approach to the evolution of species interactionsthe geographic mosaic theory of coevolution. Thompson demonstrates how an integrated study of life histories, genetics, and the geographic structure of populations yields a broader understanding of coevolution, or the development of reciprocal adaptations and specializations in interdependent species. Using examples of species interactions from an enormous range of taxa, Thompson examines how and when extreme specialization evolves in interdependent species and how geographic differences in specialization, adaptation, and the outcomes of interactions shape coevolution. Through the geographic mosaic theory, Thompson bridges the gap between the study of specialization and coevolution in local communities and the study of broader patterns seen in comparisons of the phylogenies of interacting species. Strangers to Us All Lawyers and Poetry John Reuben Thompson
John Reuben Thompson was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1823 and attended school in East Haven, Connecticut and Richmond. He was educated at the University of Virginia where he studied ancient languages, natural philosophy, mathematics, and chemistry and received his degree in 1842. (When Thompson attended the University of Virginia, his biographer, Gerald M. Garmon, notes that the University had only twelve professors and 179 students.) Thompson returned to Richmond and associated himself with the law office of James A. Seddon. He spent two years with Seddon and then returned to the University of Virginia to study law with Henry St. George Tucker . He received his law degree in 1845. Garmon in John Reuben Thompson tells the story of Thompson's ensuing legal career in a single paragraph: When he returned to Richmond this time, he found that Seddon was serving a term in Congress. This may be why Thompson decided to set up his own law practice over his father's store at Fourteenth and Main streets. What success he had has a lawyer is not recorded. He continued for at least two years, but law seems to have held little interest for him. Much of his energy and interest was diverted into his social life. His father was prospering, and young Thompson saw no reason to work at his profession.

2003 oil, enamel/canvas 60 x 72" Referencing cartoons, storybook illustration and the drawings of children, the large-scale paintings of T.L. Solien are derived from a personal obsession with childhood memory. With these images, he creates an arena for himself in which both the contemporary Self and the artist's own personal identity become the subjects of a dreamlike narrative. Veiled in seemingly disparate and highly personal iconography and the artist's own invented visual language, Solien explores the peril and fragility of being human and the ambiguity and conflict of the choices we make. In addition to being included in the 1983 Whitney Biennial, Solien's paintings, drawings and prints have been the subject of many museum exhibitions. This exhibition marks his sixth one-person exhibition in New York. The Great Skate

Search for another athlete DALY, CHUCK July 20, 1933- Basketball coach. In the history of the National Basketball Association, only three coachesRed Auerbach of the dynastic Boston Celtics, Pat Riley of the fabulous Los Angeles Lakers, and Chuck Daly of the swaggering Detroit Piston "Bad Boys"have led their teams to back-to-back championships. If the Larry Bird-led Celtics provided the NBA with a chord-crunching rock-'n'-roll soundtrack in the 1980s and the gifted Lakers were its soul music, then the Bad Boy Pistonsaggressive, menacing, and physically intimidatingwere the league's rap attack. One of basketball's most respected and well-liked coaches, Chuck Daly reached the pinnacle of his profession after more than thirty years of toil, starting out as a lowly $3,600-a-year high school coach in rural Pennsylvania. "People in our business were genuinely happy for Chuck," Ron Rothstein, a former assistant of Daly's, has said. "He worked his way to the top, from high school to college to here. Nobody ever handed Chuck anything." The dapper and fashion-conscious Daly exudes what one writer has called "an easy one-of-the-boys conviviality." "It may have taken a long time," Jack McCallum wrote in Sports Illustrated (December 18, 1989), "but the coach with all those suits and all that hair has proved to be a man of style and a man of substance. And how many men like that are there?"
