Bob Thomason
Like many of his colleagues, Bob Thomason hated to waste energy on trivial matters, like fashion. He made the decision early in life to dress only in black clothing, thus simplifying that portion of his life. With his pointed goatee, he looked like a beat poet to outsiders, but mathematicians knew him as one of the greatest talents of his generation. Few have had the simultaneous grasp of topology, algebraic geometry and $K$-theory that Thomason did.

Bob Thomason Biography
In March of 1988 Bob Thomason returned to the University of the Pacific, his alma mater, the school he helped propel to basketball success in the late 60's and early 70's. The glory years of UP basketball when they won 60 games in 3 seasons, had a winning percentage of (74%) and went to the NCAA Tournament. Thomason's desire if not his mandate was to return UP to some semblance of their earlier success. Its fair to say Thomason has accomplished this mission. The UP Tigers' sufferered thru one of their worst seasons ever going 5-24 the season before Thomason's return. He began restoring order to a chaotic situation at UP immediately. In only his second season as head coach the Tigers were playing .500+ basketball. The 2003-04' UP Tigers Tigers had an overall 24-7 mark, tied the school record for most victories in a single season, won the Western Conference Championship and are going to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998 and only the Tigers second appearance since 1979. Thomason has 256 career wins at UP, the second most by any Big West Conference Coach. He was named conference coach of the year for the 2003-04' season, the third time he has earned the award. Obviously, whoever decided to bring Thomason back knew what they were doing.

Go back to Letters from the Road - Part 2 Turn one at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Arriving in the evening on Thursday, Gravity Team members Jason Richard, Billy Gawrych, Art Thomason, Bob Kohl, and Team Manager Jeff Ferris convened at the Comfort Inn of Long Beach. Since most of the athletes participating in this event live in the Southern California Area, they would meet the team at hotel in the morning for the first day of shows. Show times would also be the earliest in Gravity Tour history as Friday and Saturday events kicked-off at the 11:00am hour while on Sunday the first show was scheduled for 9:15am. The team joked that they normally would never be up that early on Sunday or couldn't recall ever performing that early in their lives. With a shrug of the shoulders everyone was off to bed to rest up for a long weekend of shows.

Perceiving this as persecution, he resigned from his position at Chicago in June During the two years after Thomason resigned from Chicago he spent some time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one year at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. This was a mathematically profitable time for him and he was able to complete the results that had gone wrong while he was at Chicago along with some other major pieces of work.
