On Neoplatonism
by M. Moravius Horatius Piscinus On the list for the Religionis I mentioned that there were three parts to becoming a practitioner of the religio romana, which are the practice of its rites, study of the old ways, not only of the religio itself, its rites and mythology but also the philosophies, and that one needed also to adopt an ethical code from paganism whereby one would walk in the ways of the gods. Each is equally important and should be incorporated in tandem. There are different aspects of philosophy which contribute to one's general knowledge of the religio romana, these being metaphysics, ethics, and logic. I do not adhere to or advocate for any one of the ancient philosophies in particular, there is much to learn from each school. What I would like to state here is how I find that in Neoplatonism a modern practitioner of the religio romana is able to find a continuous line of thought from ancient times into a modern setting, and is therefore worthy of our consideration.
There is, to begin with, the teachings of the divine Plato. Not only was Plato influenced in his thought by Socrates, but also by the Eleactic Parmenides, and there is a strong influence of Pythagoreanism. Plato (428-347)is not just a fountain of thought, he is a continuation of the schools of philosophy that came before him. While I would recommend reading all the Dialogues of Plato and his Epistles, the key to his system of philosophy imho lies within his "

Experimentation yielded "Archimedes' Principle" that a body immersed in fluid loses as much weight as the weight of the liquid it displaces. This is a fundamental principle of buoyancy. Using water displacement in this way, Archimedes demonstrated that Hieron's crown was not made of solid gold. Realising his discovery's validity but forgetting to dress before leaving the pool where he was experimenting, he ran down the streets of Syracuse naked shouting the now famous phrase "Eureka!" ("I've found it.") "Give me a place to stand and I'll move the Earth." Archimedes' boast became a fundamental principle of mechanics that states that a great weight can be moved by a small force using levers and other means. The water screw he devised for irrigation is still copied and used in parts of Egypt, and it was used in ancient and medieval Sicily as well.

Jordanus (Jordanis) de Nemore
The name given in MSS. of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries to a mathematician who in the Renaissance period was called Jordanus Nemorarius. A number of his works are extant, but nothing is known of his life. It is customary to place him early in the thirteenth century. Emile Chasles, the geometrician, concluded from a study of the "Algorismus Jordani" that its author lived not later than the twelfth century. In the fourteenth century the English Dominican Nicolas Triveth, in a chronicle of his order, attributed the "De ponderibus Jordani" and the "De lineis datis Jordani" to Jordanus Saxo, who, in 1222, succeeded St. Dominic as master general of the Friars Preachers. Since then, the identity of Jordanus Saxo with Jordanus Nemorarius has been accepted by a great many authors; it seems difficult to maintain this opinion, however, as the Dominican superior general never adds de Nemore to his name, and the mathematician never calls himself Saxo. Ive been adding Space Shuttle missions , Astronaut bios, and anything else space related as I fill in the blanks of space shuttle missions. For example I created the Getaway Special recently featured on the front page. Right now Im basically just trying to transfer over information in bulk form, since one of the great things about wikipedia is that people will help you out as you go. hopefully ill inspire somone to wikify those pages that ive put up but havent got around to yet. If not, itll take a bit longer, but I really think that its more important to have the information available to people using Wikipedia than to have it look nice and pretty with links and everything. Since ive been getting most of my information from NASA websites, and ive had some peoblems with people putting them up for notice of copyvio, Ive created the following boilerplate: This article contains information that originally came from a NASA website. Hypatia of Alexandria
Mathematician, Astronomer, and Philosopher (d. 415 C.E.)
Hypatia was a mathematician, astronomer, and Platonic philosopher. According to the Byzantine encyclopedia The Suda , her father Theon was the last head of the Museum at Alexandria.
Hypatia's prominence was accentuated by the fact that she was both female and pagan in an increasingly Christian environment. Shortly before her death, Cyril was made the Christian bishop of Alexandria, and a conflict arose between Cyril and the prefect Orestes. Orestes was disliked by some Christians and was a friend of Hypatia, and rumors started that Hypatia was to blame for the conflict. In the spring of 415 C.E., the situation reached a tragic conclusion when a band of Christian monks seized Hypatia on the street, beat her, and dragged her body to a church where they mutilated her flesh with sharp tiles and burned her remains.
Her works include:
  • A Commentary on the Arithmetica of Diophantus
  • A Commentary on the Conics of Apollonious
  • She edited the third book of her father's Commentary on the Almagest of Ptolemy

Hypatia
Written by Ginny Adair, Class of 1998 (Agnes Scott College)
The life of Hypatia was one enriched with a passion for knowledge. Hypatia was the daughter of Theon, who was considered one of the most educated men in Alexandria, Egypt. Theon raised Hypatia in a world of education. Most historians now recognize Hypatia not only as a mathematician and scientist, but also as a philosopher. Historians are uncertain of different aspects of Hypatia's life. For example, Hypatia's date of birth is one that is highly debated. Some historians believe that Hypatia was born in the year 370 AD. On the other hand, others argue that she was an older woman (around 60) at the time of her death, thus making her birth in the year 355 AD. Throughout her childhood, Theon raised Hypatia in an environment of thought. Historians believe that Theon tried to raise the perfect human. Theon himself was a well known scholar and a professor of mathematics at the University of Alexandria. Theon and Hypatia formed a strong bond as he taught Hypatia his own knowledge and shared his passion in the search for answers to the unknown. As Hypatia grew older, she began to develop an enthusiasm for mathematics and the sciences (astronomy and astrology). Most historians believe that Hypatia surpassed her father's knowledge at a young age. However, while Hypatia was still under her father's discipline, he also developed for her a physical routine to ensure for her a healthy body as well as a highly functional mind. In her education, Theon instructed Hypatia on the different religions of the world and taught her how to influence people with the power of words. He taught her the fundamentals of teaching, so that Hypatia became a profound orator. People from other cities came to study and learn from her.

Alexandria, March AD 415 - Christian and non-Christian students of Hypatia expressed shock and outrage when informed of their teacher's murder. Hypatia had been a popular, public lecturer in philosophy and mathematics. She was also a close advisor of Orestes, the Roman governor of Alexandria. He and other officials have called for a complete investigation of Hypatia's death.
Hypatia is the most recent victim of the mob violence that has racked this city over the last 6 months. It began with an attack on Orestes by a group of fanatical Christian monks. The monks were enraged over rumors that Orestes had been making sacrifices to outlawed Pagan gods. Orestes escaped from the mob uninjured, but the monk Peter was arrested, put on trial, and executed. The ensuing controversy over Peter' s execution has developed into a serious rift between city hall and church leaders.
Cyril, the Christian Bishop, held a press conference this morning. He denied that he ordered the attack on Hypatia. Meanwhile bands of monks continue to roam freely about the city.
