Thales of Miletus
Back to the Index Life Cosmology Element Theory and Its Predecessors ... Legends of Thales Thales was the founder of Hellenic philosophy, and was regarded as one of the Seven Wise Men of Greece: he was a cosmologist, originator of science and possibly was an originator of geometry in Hellas. Herodotus tells the story that Thales was a Phoenician by descent. He was supposedly skilful in politics, economics, engineering, geography, astronomy and mathematics: the latter possibly arose from his understanding of Egyptian surveying methods, and Eudemus the Peripatetic reports that he introduced geometry to Hellas. He left no writings, but an account of his beliefs is given in Aristotle's Metaphysics A.3. Most important about the things mentioned above is that Thales attempted to provide natural explanations of earthly phenomena, rather than mythological explanations which were common to his predecessors. Life Back to the Top 624? Born in Miletus to Examyes, a Carian 585 Thales had predicted an eclipse that occurred at the battle of the Halys of the Lydians (under Alyattes ) against the Medians. At some point in the expedition, Thales is reputed to have diverted the course of a river to allow the Lydians to cross. 560 Croesus to power, drawing many intellectuals to his court

And how will we have seen such Phase Tranformations as resulting from such ancient ideas? Dimensional expression not considered in terms of what matter could do in terms of gravitational possibilites, and it would have included, the very nature of such transitions? Wonder how such thought processes has brought such ingenuity to the forefront of strings, and we would have been discussing the interactions of such strings? So it not without some comprehension that such a conversation, would not have considered discussions around the Higgs Feild, feild interpetations, and the continuing course of such string talk? About what does happen at such levels of strings and we would have had a buzz:) indeed?

Attractive properties of Amber
Thales of Miletus (640-546 BC), a Greek philospher, is believed to be the first person to have observed the attractive properties of amber. (His teachings were passed down orally until Aristotle wrote them down.) He observed that when rubbed amber could pick up light objects. We now know that this was due to static electricity, but for many centuries this was considered an interesting "magic" property of amber. Mathematician: Thales of Miletus
Thales was born in 636 B.C. to the parents Examyes and Cleobuline. He was born on Asia Minor. Thales was the first great Greek mathematician and scientist. His mathematics dealt mostly with the area of geometry, and his science in the area of natural science and earth science. He was the mathematician who founded the Milesian School of Natural Philosophers. Plato called Thales one of the Seven Sages of Ancient Greece. Thales died in 546 B.C.
Thales formed many important geometric theorems that set a foundation for much of modern geometry. Having traveled to Egypt, Thales wanted to be able to calculate the height of a pyramid. He used a similar triangle theorem, proportions, and the length of the shadow of the pyramid to determine the pyramid’s height. Through this study he also discovered that at the right time of day when the sun is in the correct position, an object’s shadow is equal to its height.
Thales also discovered five basic Euclidian Theorems. He defined diameter: the diameter of a circle is a straight line drawn through the center of the circle and it bisects the circle. He determined that the angles at the base of an isosceles triangle are congruent. The exterior angles of the angles at the base are also congruent. He figured out that vertical angles formed by two intersecting lines are equal. He discovered the similar triangles theorem, which he used to calculate the height of pyramids and other figures. Thales determined that the angles of a semicircle are both right angles.
