    William Temple Franklin-George Fox Collection
(0.25 linear feet) B F86f American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract After William Temple Franklin returned to Europe in 1792, he left oversight of his financial interests in America in the hands of his intimate friend and fellow land speculator, George Fox. A physician and member of the American Philosophical Society, Fox also took possession of the remainder of Benjamin Franklin's papers, which eventually passed through his son, Charles Pemberton Fox, to the APS. The Franklin-Fox Collection contains 98 items, consisting mostly of letters from William Temple Franklin to George Fox regarding land holdings and finances, and retained copies of Fox's letters to Franklin. The correspondence is fairly relentlessly focused on business matters and rarely contains personal comments, however there are occasional requests for books and two reference to the yellow fever epidemic of 1798 and the death of Benjamin Franklin Bache.
    • Background note Scope and content Administrative information
Background note The sons of Joseph Fox and Elizabeth Mickle, George (1759-1828) and Samuel Mickel Fox I (1763-1808) became intimate friends of Benjamin Franklin's grandson William Temple Franklin. George, a physician who was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1784, represented Philadelphia in the Assembly in 1800, and was an organizer and director of the Delaware and Chesapeake Canal and an early supporter of the bank of North America, of which he was Director from 1818 until 1828. Samuel also served in public office as a member of City Council, the Common Council (1793-1797), and the Upper Chamber (1797-1800), and he was both an incorporator of the Bank of Pennsylvania and its President from 1797-1808. After the Indian treaties of 1784 and 1785, Samuel and George invested heavily in lands in northern and western Pennsylvania, often investing with the Morrises and other Philadelphians. At his death, Samuel held 118,000 acres.

    The St. George Utah Temple
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
The St. George Temple was the first temple completed in Utah and is the oldest temple still in use today. It was also the only Utah temple completed while Brigham Young was alive. It is built of locally quarried red sandstone plastered white. The ground on which the temple is built was considered to swampy to support the structure so the pioneer saints built a system of drains and packed the foundation with black volcanic rock (basalt?) and lead which they pounded into the ground with an old cannon that they used as a piledriver.
After seeing the completed structure for the first time, Brigham Young complained that the tower was wrong. The temple builders said that it was too late to change and the dedication proceeded as planed. Shortly after Brigham Young died, a lightning strike caused a fire that burned just as much of the tower as President Young had complained about. The builders then followed President Young's instructions and rebuilt the tower as he wanted it, claiming that, even in death, Brigham Young got his way.
The temple was originally built like the Kirtland and Nauvoo Temples, with two large assembly halls. The lower Assembly Hall was partitioned with curtains to provide the ordinance rooms for the Endowment Ceremony. In 1938 the lower Assembly Hall was rebuilt with permanant walls dividing it into the 4 Ordinance rooms. Now the 4 Ordinance rooms have been changed into three rooms and the endowment is presented on video.

The St. George Utah Temple The St. George Temple, located in Utah's Dixie, was dedicated in 1877, the first of the Utah temples. Even today it is an impressive building; imagine the awe with which it must have been greeted when new. The first of the Utah temples. Some Latter-day Saints believe that Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, built in about 1000 BC, was the first temple of their religion (apparently this is not official LDS doctrine). Non-Mormons think this is a bit of a stretch, but so be it. The next temple was built in Kirtland, Ohio, in 1836; it still stands, under the ownership of the Community of Christ (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), and is not used for the ceremonies the other temples are. The third temple (second in "this dispensation") was built in Nauvoo , Illinois, in 1846. Soon after its completion, an arsonist destroyed the interior of the temple. In May 1850, a tornado knocked down one wall of the gutted structure and weakened the other walls, which were eventually taken down. It has now (2002) been rebuilt. St. George was the next, dedicated in 1877. Logan, Manti, and Salt Lake were constructed more or less simultaneously, and were dedicated in that order.

After the martyrdom of Joseph Smith, the Saints were led from Nauvoo to the site of modern day Salt Lake City. It was not too long afterwards that Brigham Young directed the Saints to expand their growth into other areas. One of those areas was modern day, St. George, Utah. The Saints were then directed to build a temple in St. George Utah. The Temple at St. George is the first temple constructed in Utah. It was dedicated on April 6, 1877. This page contains a sample of the best digital photos and pictures that we have taken of the St. George, Utah, Temple. http://faculty.goucher.edu/eng211/george_herbert.htm
George Herbert, The Temple Genre: sacred lyric collection imitating the architectural structure of a church while tracing the story of the persona's struggle with faith. Form: extraordinary metrical experiments, including "shaped poems," the most famous of which are "The Altar" and "Easter Wings." The book as a whole also has the form of a spiritual autobiography in lyrics, sacralizing the sonnet cycle's obsessive narration of the Lover-Beloved relationship and redirecting its interest in philosophy to the limitations of will-directed reason and the power of faith to command the believer. Characters: Herbert's persona is almost indistinguishable from his historical one, except that some of these poetic situations clearly are fanciful, and the personae of "Love," "God," "heart," arise from the medieval allegorical tradition but transcend it by means of Herbert's dexterous and surprising ability to make them psychological forces as well as metaphysical phenomena. Summary: Herbert's struggle tends to reflect his personal ambitions for a worldly life which were set against the demands of his rural parsonage at Bemerton. His ambition raised him from the fifth son of a dead Welch father to a member of Parliament and of the faculty of Cambridge. But the death of patrons led him to reconsider his objectives, and his last 3 years he lived as a poor country parson and wrote all the poems in

3/25/04 - The Church of Beatlism has finally broken its silence on a matter of grave political and moral importance to this country right now. Our Pope has issued an official position on the current debate over the definition of marriage. Please, read it . Our church and our country need to stand strong and stand together to fight for the values that matter most to us. Help us lead the charge to officially Ban Gray Marriage!
BIGGISH NEWS! Semi-Upheaval within the Quasi-Church!!!
Editor's Note: Upon review, the original tone of this article was somewhat overly dramatic. So, I have re-worded some of the text to reflect the church's ever-changing view of these events, and I hope it helps to clarify our official position. The Church is not an exclusionary or authoritarian entity, and we hope the new message reflects the new public-relations face of the Temple....
It is perhaps necessary that we inform you, the occasionally loyal Beatlist public, of some events that may or may not have transpired within the organization. A group of clerics probably have challenged the way of life we have so long promoted, and might have attempted to alter the course of the Temple by preaching their heresy in the name of Beatlism. These heathens guestbook and discussion board with our derisive jeers (or effusive praise). Let us not be seduced by their slick (and frankly distasteful)
