Oswald Teichmuller
) introduced quasi-conformal mappings and differential geometric methods into complex analysis . His work was published in Deutsche Mathematik , a journal in synthetic mathematics founded by Bieberbach and was been neglected for a while for political reasons. "Rediscovered" few years after his death, the theory of Teichmuller spaces (a moduli space theory for Riemann surface s) was further developed by Lars Ahlfors , Lipman Bers and others. The Teichmuller representative or Teichmuller character is a construction with p-adic number s. Teichmuller was a passionate Nazi , who joined the German army in and died fighting on the Russian front. Return to Main Index of Wikipedia Articles

Jukka Sarvas. Boundary of a Homogeneous Jordan Domain * oswald teichmuller. Ein Verschiebungssatz der Quasikonformen Abbildung .
http://www.math.ntnu.no/~hjelle/skole/quasidisks/
Hovedoppgaven, Postscript/PDF quasidisks.pdf

Abstract A quasidisk is a Euclidean disk under a quasiconformal self-mapping of the entire plane. We discuss a few of the many different characterizing properties of quasidisks; Ahlfors' three point condition, the reversed triangle inequality, homogeneity and the behavior of conformal invariants such as the modulus of quadrilaterals and harmonic measure of boundary arcs. Examples and counterexamples in connection with these characterizations are given. In particular, an elementary example of a simply connected homogeneous domain which is not a quasidisk is given. This shows that the hypothesis of Sarvas' Theorem can not be weakened. Finally, the construction of the Gehring-Väisälä quasidisk is discussed, and the dimension of its boundary is estimated.

Faculty of Arts and Sciences - Memorial Minute:
Lars Valerian Ahlfors
At a meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on October 17, 2000, the following Minute was placed upon the records. Lars' lectures, as well as his writings, were famous for their clarity, economy and elegance. The lectures were delivered in a strongly flavored Scandinavian accent, and his textbook, "Complex Analysis" (1953), is still the leading elementary text on the subject for students of pure mathematics. Lars Valerian Ahlfors was born under tragic circumstances in Helsinki on April 18, 1907: his mother died in childbirth. His father, a professor of engineering, remarried and tried to give Lars a normal boyhood as Finland struggled through World War I and gained its independence from Russia. When he entered the university in 1924, Ahlfors soon caught the eye of Ernst Lindelof, the patriarch of Finnish mathematics, and Rolf Nevanlinna, a rising mathematical star. The year after Ahlfors graduated, Nevanlinna was invited to Zurich and Ahlfors accompanied him. There he met many of the leading mathematicians of Europe and solved an important problem in complex variable theory. Back in Finland he got a lectureship at the University of Turku, where he wrote his thesis and several other papers that attracted international attention and brought him an invitation to Harvard. The Fields Medals were first awarded in 1936, and Ahlfors was one of the two recipients.

34. Beethoven!
Another example of a highly intelligent person with bizarre habits (in this casea devotion to Nazi ideology) is the mathematician oswald teichmuller.
http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~norman/CurrentAffairs/Beethoven.html
Beethoven!
Beethoven's 9th symphony manuscript is now 3 million pounds of music! Last week (20 May 2003) it fetched almost that. Beethoven's String Quartet Opus 59 no 3 (of the Razoumovsky series) can be downloaded. It is a good MP3 file in 4 movements, played by the gorgeous Canadian Borealis String Quartet. Why gorgeous? It's not only their playing, but look at their photo and see how cool they are! More MP3 files of many of his other string quartets are also downloadable from here . The quality of MP3 is not as good as as a cd on your hi-fi, but hey, they are free. You can just play them on your PC while you are clearing e-mail and other chores. As the files can be big, maybe you want to just audio stream them. Now, as I mentioned before, it is possible for someone to be a genius in one aspect of life but be utterly revolting in another. Beethoven wrote divine music. I recommend his string quartets (example above) as a great provider of solace when you go through difficult and emotionally wrenching times I know, for they help me a lot when I had tough episodes. But Beethoven was a slob. He even left an un-emptied chamber pot under his piano.
