Radical Psychology Spring 2001, Vol. 2, Issue 1. BEDSIDE AND PHILOSOPHICALLY ORIENTED CLINICAL PRACTICE By Shlomit C. Schuster A review of Alfred I. Tauber's Confessions of a Medicine Man: An Essay in Popular Philosophy . Cambridge, Mass., MIT Press, 1999. pp. 159
If a medical ethics can have a logo, then the ethics proposed in Confessions of a Medicine Man has one. The front piece of the book, a copy of Sir Luke Fildes' painting "The Doctor" ushers in its main theme, and this image accompanies the reader throughout the book: a concerned, pensive-looking physician sitting attentively beside the bed of a patient. In these confessions, Professor Alfred Tauber describes his life and career as an M.D.: his development from a young medical prince, empowered with technological and scientific knowledge, into a wise and empathetic witness of human suffering. Tauber sees his book as an autobiographical and philosophical essay in which he, as the son of a doctor, compares the medical world in which he grew up with that in which his own children are growing up. The exemplary life of Dr. Tauber senior seems to have been a major guiding light in the clinical practice that his son advocates. The father was confronted with exceptional moral dilemmas during the Hitler era in Europe, when he felt morally obliged to give the best medical treatment, not only to those close to him, his Jewish friends, family and community members, but also to the Nazis who would persecute and kill them.

An Intensive Weekend Program 8 Credit Hours You MUST be present at the first class to be considered registered. All class sessions will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. WebCT participation will be a required part of this class.
Program Description: Is health care a right or a privilege? When an individual has an injury or disease how is it socially defined? How has the physical functioning of the human body been interpreted by the scientific community? How have these interpretations shaped the type and quality of medical treatment available? What is the impact of a person's gender, race, ethnicity, class and sexual orientation on the quality of the health care they receive? How does our cultural perception of healing, illness and wellness impact our relationship to our health care system? This two-quarter course is designed for students who wish to enhance their understanding of the social, cultural, and psychological factors that have influenced health and health care in the United States. The focus of the 1 st quarter will be making meaning of how we define and construct health care in our society. We will examine the US system of medical care from a sociological perspective; particular emphasis will be placed on the structure and organization of health care institutions and societal response to problems of illness and disease. The program will acquaint students to the socio-behavioral dynamics that are a vital part of health care, healing and the experience of illness. A central question for this quarter will be: How does our social frameworks and structures effect our expectations of health and our health care delivery system?

"Tauber's book is encyclopedicnot only a revealing and comprehensive study of Thoreau but also a full vision of the Romantic Weltanschauung and its relevance to contemporary concerns in philosophy, science, and poetics. While this scope is wildly ambitious, Tauber admirably delivers, always informing his parts with the whole, consistently altering the whole with his parts."Eric Wilson, author of Emerson's Sublime Science "In arguing for the centrally moral and ethical value of Thoreau's works, Tauber is taking a brave stance in these slippery postmodern times. . . . It's one thing to praise Thoreau for his opposition to the Mexican War, his philosophy of passive resistance, and his fervent opposition to slavery. It's quite another to argue that his entire projecthis whole sense of identity, self-formation, and his relation to natureis part of a deeply moral enterprise. . . .Thoreau's modernity has been defined in many ways in recent years. Tauber adds another important and distinctive dimension to this discussion."H. Daniel Peck, John Guy Vassar Professor of English, Vassar College DESCRIPTION (back to top) In his graceful philosophical account, Alfred I. Tauber shows why Thoreau still seems so relevant todaymore relevant in many respects than he seemed to his contemporaries. Although Thoreau has been skillfully and thoroughly examined as a writer, naturalist, mystic, historian, social thinker, Transcendentalist, and lifelong student, we may find in Tauber's portrait of Thoreau the moralist a characterization that binds all these aspects of his career together.

"What could be more serious than married life?," Richard Strauss once remarked about his Sinfonia domestica (1904), "marriage is the most profound event in life and the spiritual joy of such a union is heightened by the arrival of a child." On the surface the remark appears to be a defense of his domestic symphony (to be performed by the American Symphony Orchestra on April 5, 1998) maligned by a press who saw the sacred art of music desecrated in a celebration of everyday family life. But Strauss was, in fact, quite serious. His preoccupation with marriage and fidelity, with domestic relationships formed a continuous theme throughout his life's work, and it established a significant bond between himself and his librettist of nearly three decades, Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Hofmannsthal was quick to remind Strauss of this motif in Ariadne auf Naxos , when the composer began to lose interest in a project he saw as too stylized. "What
