Re-sizing cape
Submitted by lance on 07/22/2002. Hi guys,
I've got a problem I hope you can tell me what I did wrong..... i asked a while ago about the re-sizing of a cape that had been streched long and the neck measurements were way too small. I had an article sent to me about the soak in salt water for 1.5 hrs and sweat the cape in a fridge overnight then with the blunt end of a file working from the center line out to the cut edge you can actually gain about 4 to 5 inches and bring it back into shape. Well I'm here to tell you that I either did something wrong or the person that sent this is not a HACKsidermist . I've got slip real bad. It did exactly as it was supposed to . It opened right up. but now the slip problem .... I think I can still get him mounted but don't know about the slippage ? Do you guys think it will be ok once it dries? do I have any other options ? just need some advice ?
Thanks Lance! Return to Deer Taxidermy Category Menu

Paul Tannery was a brother of Jules Tannery whose biography is also given in this archive. Since Paul Tannery is famous as an historian of mathematics it is particularly fitting that we should give details of his life and work in this archive dedicated to the history of mathematics. Paul Tannery's parents were Delphin Tannery, who was an engineer working for the French railways, and Opportune Perrier. Delphin and Opportune Tannery had three children, the eldest being a daughter while the second oldest was Paul and Jules Tannery was the youngest. The family moved from Mantes to Redon in Ille-et-Vilaine in the Brittany region of northwestern France. He later worked at Mondeville close to Caen. The Paul Sweet Tannery 1840-1874
During the last half of the nineteenth century, one of the most important industries in Santa Cruz County was the manufacture of leather. The first known commercial tannery established in the county and in California was the Paul Sweet Tannery in Scotts Valley. The quality of leather from this area was superior to any in the world because of the ready availability of hides and the abundant supply of tan oak trees, which yielded the best kind of bark for tanning. The Paul Sweet Tannery was located on twelve acres near where Lockwood Lane and Mount Hermon Road intersect. In approximately 1840 Francisco LaJeunesse, a French Canadian trapper, began tanning hides on that site. The land, a part of the Rancho San Augustin, was owned by naturalized Mexican citizen Joseph L. Majors. Eventually, LaJeunesse left to join Captain John Fremont, leaving the tannery to Paul Sweet in 1843. At the time Paul Sweet operated the tannery, it consisted of eight vats, made of split redwood logs. The logs were dug out in an oval shape and measured five feet wide and two and one half feet deep. The hides were soaked in these vats which contained the tan oak bark solution until the air was loosened. The bark itself was ground by a large horse-driven wooden wheel, grinding about one half cord of bark per day. The tannery had the capability of processing about 200 steer hides and 300 deer hides annually. In 1846 Sweet joined the Bear Flag battalion selling the tannery business to Pauline Weaver and Pruitt Saint Clair. In 1847 William Blackburn bought the tannery. He brought in Richard C. Kirby to run it for him, paying him $75.00 per month. In 1852 Kirby married and moved to Santa Cruz. Blackburn sold out his interest at that time. Kirby had also worked his own tannery in the Squabble Hollow or Glen Canyon area. He is most famous, however, for his large tannery in Santa Cruz.

Greek mathematics in cultural context
I shall attempt an overview (necessarily sketchy!) of the "career" of Greek mathematics in its cultural setting. Features of the background include Eleatic philosophy, the development of the "liberal arts" tradition, the rivalry of professions, the rise of rhetoric as a technique of demonstration, and Aristotle's formalization of logic. A unifying thread is the emergence of the familiar view-not, of course, uncontested-of mathematics as attaining a unique exactness, certainty and insight into the nature of things.

Overview of tannery module is inspired by photo, page 4xx book #4 of the Logging Railroad Era of Lumbering in Pennsylvania. The tannery and surrounding company town are inspired by the town of Leetonia, PA. Leetonia featured a large tannery, sawmill, town, and railroad facilities. The placement of the buildings on the tannery module loosely follow the placement of buildings in lower portion of Leetonia. The major difference is that the model tannery is on the opposite end of town. The majority of the modeling on this section was done by Paul Miklos. The exceptions being the company houses which were built by Clarke O'Byrne, the company store built by Ed Heeg, and the CPL office and Post Office built by David Keith.
The company houses were built by Clarke O'bern. Paul Miklos built the privies, sheds, and added the details.
Farm animals were common in Leetonia. This house is the exception, having pigs. Most families had cows. The cows would graze in the pastures above town, returning each twice a day for milking.

To: JoyceTice Hi Joyce, I found a Troy newspaper clipping and photo of Bowen's Tannery. The newspaper clipping is not dated but it's probably an article from the Troy Gazette-Register, circa 1978. Brainard Bowen, the man in the photo, died in 1898 so the photo was taken sometime before then. The 1858 Wm. Barker map of Bradford County and the 1869 Beers Atlas of Bradford County both show a tannery located on Sugar Creek across Canton Street from a lot owned by "B. Bowen". It's not clear who actually owned the tannery in 1858, but the Subscriber's Directory for the 1869 Beers Atlas lists "Bowman B., Tanner, Canton st.". The early history documents indicate that Laman Bowen bought the tannery from Calvin Dodge; later, Brainard Bowen (Laman's son) extensively enlarged the tannery. Sincerely

    Paul Louis Toussaint Héroult (1863 - 1914)
Paul Louis Toussaint Héroult was born in 1863 into a world of country folk and cottage industries. His father, Patrice, managed a small tannery on the banks of the Orne River, at Saint-Bénin, a peaceful location where the Héroult family had lived for generations. Paul might have been expected to continue the business his grandfather had started, but rather than an honorable tanner, he became an inventor. The major influence, however, was the fortuitous meeting with an old friend of his father's, Mr. Belliot, a lawyer by profession, highly cultured, with a magnificent personal library. After school, Paul spent hours discovering the joys of reading. Science, and particularly, research and discovery, began to fascinate the Paul. His interest reaches its highest point the day he comes upon the famous work of Sainte-Claire Deville, with the unglamorous title, " Aluminum, its properties, its production and applications ". He entered the prestigious École des Mines after a brilliant entrance examination in , at the age of 19. A friendship developed between him and his chemistry professor, who was also fascinated by aluminum.
