Kraus, Jr - Brief Article Art in America April, 2000 by Sidney Tillim Early paper photographs wereand areno match for the daguerreotype in recording sheer information. Paper prints, especially calotypes, are inherently pictorial in that light and mass prevail over depicted detail. The clarity of a fine daguerreotype is almost linear. After attempts to etch them for purposes of reproduction largely failed, however, the daguerreotype gradually became obsolete. The ease with which paper prints could be reproduced was the basis of the proliferation of photographic images. Talbot's negative-positive process was a major factor in the decline of the daguerreotypewhich was a one-shot, like a Polaroid. Talbot's first photographs, which the English experimenter called photogenic drawings, were direct positives, followed around 1840 by a chemically developed negative from which multiple positives, called calotypes or Talbotypes, could be produced. It was this promethean moment that was recorded in this exhibition of calotype negatives and salt prints, so called because they were "fixed" with common salt to prevent darkening. (The images faded anyway, with the result that Talbot sought to replicate them mechanically, producing one of the earliest photomechanical processes, the photoglyphic engraving).
