This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

P G Tait 's father was John Tait and his mother was Mary Ronaldson. John Tait was a secretary to Walter Francis Scott, the fifth duke of Buccleuch. Peter had two sisters and he began his schooling in the Grammar School in Dalkeith. However, when he was six years old his father died and Peter, with his two sisters and his mother, moved to Edinburgh to live with an uncle John Ronaldson. An Edinburgh banker, John Ronaldson was nevertheless interested in science, in particular in astronomy, geology and with the newly invented photography. He soon interested his young nephew Peter in these subjects and it is fair to say that Peter's interest in science was a direct consequence of his uncle's enthusiasm for the sciences. When the family moved to Edinburgh Peter, of course, had to leave his school in Dalkeith. He next attended a private school in Circus Place Edinburgh, then in 1841, when he was ten years old, he entered Edinburgh Academy. Lewis Campbell, who later became the professor of Greek at the University of St Andrews, and James Clerk Maxwell were one year above Tait at the Academy. In fact

(Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Peter Tait was at school with Maxwell . Although his early career was in mathematics and he held a chair of mathematics in Belfast for 6 years, most of his later work was in natural philosophy. Tait became an advocate of Hamilton 's quaternions and made contributions to their study, for example in Elementary Treatise on Quaternions (1867), and Introduction to Quaternions (1873). He was a colleague of Chrystal at Edinburgh University where he had been appointed in 1860, chosen in preference to Maxwell who was also a candidate for the post. Jointly with Thomson (later Lord Kelvin) Tait wrote an important treatise Treatise on Natural Philosophy which was published in 1867. He published tables of Knots as part of Thomson 's theory of molecules as vortices in the ether. After this Tait concentrated on thermoelectricity and thermal conductivity. Tait also wrote a classic paper on the trajectory of golf balls. With the physicist Balfour Stewart he wrote

Physicist. Born in Dalkeith. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy with James Clerk Maxwell (1831-79), who became a life-long friend. Tait was appointed to the Chair of Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh (1860), a position for which Maxwell had been a candidate. With William Thomson (1824 - 1907), Tait wrote the important Treatise on Natural Philosophy , published in 1867. Jointly with Balfour Stewart, he wrote The Unseen Universe (1867) which was in such demand that they followed it with a sequel Paradoxical Philosophy (1878). Tait also wrote a classic paper on the trajectory of golf balls! He died in Edinburgh. The Tait Professorship of Mathematical Physics remains an established Chair within the University of Edinburgh. Tait, Peter Guthrie (1831-1901)

Scottish physicist who was a close friend of Maxwell's and his contemporary in the study of fields. With Kelvin , he published Treatise on Natural Philosophy (1867), which was important for establishing energy within the structure of the theory of mechanics. (It was later republished under the title Principles of Mechanics and Dynamics by Dover Publications). Following up of Kelvin's suggestion that atoms were composed of tiny strings knotted in various configurations, Tait made the first systematic study of knots and their properties. Kelvin Maxwell

THE BRITISH SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS Provisional Bibliography of Peter Guthrie Tait Compiled by Chris Pritchard PETER GUTHRIE TAIT (1831-1901): CENTENARY MEETING The Royal Society of Edinburgh July 2001 CONTENTS Introduction General Tait's Books Tait's Addresses ... Miscellaneous Introduction In contrast to his illustrious compatriots, Maxwell and William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), the life and scientific work of Peter Guthrie Tait has been the subject of relatively little research. This booklet has been prepared in the hope that it will stimulate interest among historians of science and provide a starting point for their enquiries. Tait’s biographer, Knott, catalogues some 365 papers, articles, laboratory notes, reviews and obituaries, together with two volumes of collected papers. The books that Tait wrote, in whole or in part, are also listed (see below: Knott, 1911, 351-365). This remains the most authoritative guide to the primary material of one of the nineteenth century’s most colourful scientists, though the biography that precedes it is a study in hagiography. The Royal Society Catalogue of Papers is another useful source.

TAIT, PETER G.
TAIT, A, F.TAIT, P. G. Tait was a Churchman by conviction; but although the work of his life was all done in England, he remained a Scotsman to the end. It was the opinion of some that he never really understood the historical position of the English Church and took no pains to learn. John Tillotson, one of his predecessors in the archbishopric, was a favorite hero of his, and in some ways the two men resembled one another. But Tait had none of Tillotson's gentleness, and he rode roughshod over the obstacles in his way. He cannot be called a great ecclesiastical statesman, but he administered his office well and was undoubtedly one of the foremost public men of his day. See R. T. Davidson and D. Benham, Life of Archbishop Tait, 2 vols. (1891); A. C. Tait, Catharine and Craufurd Tait (1880). (W. E. Co.) TAIT, ARTHUR FITZWILLIAM (1819-1905), American artist, was born pear Liverpool, England, on the 5th of August 1819. He emigrated to the United States in 1850, and was identified with the art life of New York until his death. In 1858 he was elected to full membership in the National Academy of Design, New York. He died at Yonkers, New York, on the 28th of April 1905. He painted barnyard fowls and wild birds as well as sheep and deer, with great dexterity, and reproductions of his minute panels of chickens had an enormous vogue. together with an admirably lucid volume of popular lectures on Recent Advances in Physical Science. With Lord Kelvin he collaborated in writing the well-known Treatise on Natural Philosophy. " Thomson and Tail," as it is familiarly called (" T and T'" was the authors' own formula), was planned soon after Lord Kelvin became acquainted with Tait, on the latter's appointment to his professorship in Edinburgh, and it was intended to be an all-comprehensive treatise on physical science, the foundations being laid in kinematics and dynamics, and the structure completed with the properties of matter, heat, light, electricity and magnetism. But the literary partnership ceased in about eighteen years, when only the first portion of the plan had been completed, because each of the members felt he could work to better advantage separately than jointly. The friendship, however, endured for the twenty-three years which yet remained of Tail's life.
