John Synge 's father Edward Synge could trace his family back to the fifteenth century. The origin of the name "Synge" is described in the introduction to General relativity : papers in honour of J L Synge The name Synge is said to have originated with Henry VIII, who commanded a favourite choirboy to "Synge, Millington, synge". John Synge's mother, Ellen Price, was of Scottish origin, being descended from the Scottish Stuarts, in particular a Sir William Stuart who went to Ireland in the early seventeenth century. After being educated at St Andrews College in Dublin, Synge entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1915. There his achievements were quite remarkable, winning a Foundation Scholarship at the end of his first year. This scholarship was normally won by students in their third year of study. He was awarded his M.A. in 1919 in Mathematics and Experimental Physics. He received the Large Gold Medal for his outstanding work. After graduating, Synge was appointed to a lectureship in mathematics at Trinity College, but he only held the post for a short time, leaving for Canada in 1920. from 1920 to 1925 Synge was an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto. Then in 1925 he returned to Trinity College, Dublin where he was elected to a fellowship and also appointed to the chair of Natural Philosophy (the older name for Physics).

John Millington Synge (1871-1909) by J.B.Yeats John Millington Synge
was born in I87I in Rathfarnham, now absorbed into the suburbs of south Dublin. His father died in the following year, and Mrs Synge, left with five children and a reduced income, moved to a house next door to her mother in nearby Rathgar. John was a sickly asthmatic child, and laboured under the burden of his mother's vivid belief in hell-fire. An early love of the countryside and wildlife afforded some relief from the fond oppressions of home. Within a few years he no longer regarded himself as a Christian, but as a worshipper of a new goddess, Ireland. He gulped the patriotic balladry published in a nationalist newspaper, the Nation, and scoured the countryside in search of the Irish antiquities he read about in the writings of George Petrie. Synge's enthusiasm for Irish matters did not close his mind to a wider cultural heritage. He took up the violin, and, while scraping through a second-class degree at Trinity College, which introduced him to the Irish languaget and to Hebrew, he worked for and won a scholarship in counterpoint from the Royal Irish Academy of Music. It seemed that music was going to be his life. In the autumn of 1897 Synge experienced the first signs of lymphatic sarcoma, or Hodgkin's Disease. He was operated on in Dublin

John Millington Synge April 16 March 24 ) was an Irish writer, best known for the play Playboy of the Western World Synge was born Rathfarnham, County Dublin . He received his degree from Trinity College , Dublin, then went to Germany to study music. He then travelled on foot through Germany, Italy and France and then went to Paris , where he lived for several years writing literary criticism. Here, in 1899, he met a compatriot, William Butler Yeats , who persuaded Synge to live for a while in the Aran Islands and then return to Dublin and devote himself to creative work. The Aran Islands (1907) is the journal of Synge's retreat. His subsequent work reflected the bleak and tragic lives of Irish peasants and fisherfolk. The plays on which his fame rests were written in the last six years of his life. The first two one-act plays, In the Shadow of the Glen , (1903), a comedy, and Riders to the Sea (1904), were produced by the Irish National Theatre Society. This group, with Synge, Yeats and Lady Gregory as co-directors, organized in 1904 the Abbey Theatre. Two comedies, The Well of the Saints (1905) and The Playboy of the Western World (1907), were presented by the Abbey players. The latter play created an uproar among Irish patriots stung by Synge's bitter humor.

    http://www.emmedici.com/journeys/eire/cultura/letteratura/esynge.htm
    JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE
(Rathfanham 16 April 1871 - Dublin 24 March 1909) LIFE: Coming from a bourgeois family he first studies at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and at Trinity College where he degrees, then to Paris where he comes in contact with the symbolist atmosphere. He travels to France, Germany and Italy observing and meditating and coming then back to Paris where in 1897 he meets the poet William Butler Yeats . Synge shows to the poet some of his works about the French literature but Yeats finds them insufficient; but having immediately understood the great abilities and possibility of this young talent he exhorts him to leave Paris to go to live for some time in the Aran islands, off the Galway bay, in order to learn habits, traditions and language of the Gaelic people.
Synge in contact with that nature of incisive beauty, near those plain and primitive folk, definitively forms his temperament of man and writer. He writes The Aran Islands, 1907 , kind of diary of his stay on the islands, and the dramas The Shadow of the Glen, 1903
