Sylvester, James Joseph English mathematician who was one of the discoverers of the theory of algebraic invariants. He coined the term 'matrix' in 1850 to describe a rectangular array of numbers out of which determinants can be formed.
Sylvester was born in London and studied mainly at Cambridge. He became professor of natural philosophy at University College, London, 1837. In 1841 he went to the USA to become professor at the University of Virginia, but resigned 1845 and returned to England. For the next ten years he abandoned academic life, although he took in private pupils, including nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale. In 1844 he joined an insurance company, and in 1850 he became a barrister. In 1855 he returned to academic life, becoming professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich, London.
In 1877 he again went to the USA, becoming professor at the newly founded Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Returning to the UK, he was from 1883 professor at Oxford.

d. March 15, 1897, London British mathematician who with Arthur Cayley founded the theory of algebraic invariants, algebraic-equation coefficients that are unaltered when the coordinate axes are translated or rotated. In 1838 Sylvester became professor of natural philosophy at University College, London. In 1841 he accepted the professorship of mathematics at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, but resigned after only three months. Four years later he went to London, where he became an actuary for an insurance company, retaining his interest in mathematics only through tutoring. One of the most notable of his private pupils was Florence Nightingale. In 1846 he became a law student at the Inner Temple, and in 1850 he was admitted to the bar. While working as a lawyer Sylvester began an enthusiastic and profitable partnership with Cayley. Together, they created the theory of algebraic forms. From 1855 to 1870 Sylvester was professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He went to the United States once again in 1876 to become professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. While there he founded (1878) and became the first editor of the American Journal of Mathematics

James Joseph was educated at the Royal Institution School, Liverpool, he proceeded to St. John's College, Cambridge, where he earned the coveted Second Wrangler in mathematics in 1837. Unable to swear to the Thirty-nine Articles of the Anglican Church, however, Sylvester was barred from obtaining a degree. Still, he earned the post of Professor of Natural Philosophy at University College, London, on Nov. 25, 1837.
Single all his life, and dedicated more to public research than to regular teaching, Sylvester led a restless academic life. Appointed as Professor of Mathematics, University of Virginia, 1841, the year he obtained an M.A. degree from the University of Dublin, he resigned soon after, in March 1842, evidently because of an altercation with a student who had insulted him. He returned to England to work at Equity and Law Life Assurance Company from 1845 to 1855. Sylvester was called to the Bar in 1850. His next post was as Professor of Mathematics, Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, from 1855 to 1870. During this stint he became President of the London Mathematical Society and of the Mathematical and Physical Section of the British Association.

Kepler's Apostrophe
Yes! on the annals of my race, In characters of flame, Which time shall dim not nor deface, I'll stamp, my deathless name.
The fire which on my vitals preys, And inly smouldering lies, Shall flash out to a meteor's blaze And stream along the skies.
Clafed as the angry ocean's swell My soul within me boils, Like a chained monarch in his cell, Or lion in the toils.
To wealth, to pride, to lofty state, No more I'll bend the knee, But Fortune's minions, meanly great, Shall stoop their necks to me.
The God which formed me for command, And gave me strength to rise, Shall plant His sceptre in my hand, His lightning in my eyes;
Shall with the thorny crown of fame My aching temples bind, And hail me by a mighty name A monarch of the mind.
Me, heaven's bright galaxy shall greet Theirs by primordial choice, And earth the eternal tones repeat Of my prophetic voice.
Stung in her turn, the heartless fair

Kepler's Apostrophe
Remonstrance
Quotations "Mathematics is not a book confined within a cover and bound between brazen clasps, whose contents it needs only patience to ransack; it is not a mine, whose treasures may take long to reduce into possession, but which fill only a limited number of veins and lodes; it is not a soil, whose fertility can be exhausted by the yield of successive harvests; it is not a continent or an ocean, whose area can be mapped out and its contour defined: it is limitless as that space which it finds too narrow for its aspirations; its possibilities are as infinite as the worlds which are forever crowding in and multiplying upon the astronomer's gaze."

Sylvester, James (1814-1897)

Eccentric and gifted English mathematician who was a close friend of Cayley . He was absent-minded, but nonetheless an accomplished poet and musician. After a brief stint as a professor in America, he returned to England. Here, he could not find a job and became a lawyer, in which capacity he met Cayley . Following a professorship at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich from 1855-1870, he became a professor at Johns Hopkins in 1876. He invented Sylvester's dialytic method for eliminating an unknown in two polynomial equations. He also collaborated with Cayley in his work on forms, discovering canonical binary forms for odd degrees. Forms for even degrees were later solved by E. K. Wakeford Sylvester also founded the American Journal of Mathematics in 1878. In 1883, he returned to England to fill the Savilian professorship of Geometry at Oxford after the death of Henry Smith . At the ripe age of 71, he invented the theory of reciprocants (differential invariants).

This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

    Life and Work in Letters
    by Karen Hunger Parshall
    Reviewed by June Barrow-Green
By comparison with his contemporaries, James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897), one of the dominant figures of nineteenth-century British mathematics, had an unconventional career. He twice crossed the Atlantic in pursuit of academic employment, he held chairs in London, Woolwich and Oxford, and for more than a decade he was engaged in the practice of law. But while Sylvester may have spent many years physically separated from the mainstream of British and European mathematics, his letter-writing ensured that he remained very much in touch with its developments. Sylvester, like many Victorian mathematicians, was a prolific correspondentalthough not in quite the same league as Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) who wrote more than 98,000 letters in the last 37 years of his life! As Karen Hunger Parshall shows, Sylvester's correspondence makes for informative reading. From a collection of some 1200 letters of Sylvester and his circle Parshall has selected 140 "to cover Sylvester's life and work as completely and as substantively as the imperfect historical record allows." [p.viii] Starting with Sylvester's application for the chair of Natural Philosophy at University College London (UCL) in 1837, and ending with a letter to the Editor of
