7. The Sacred And Profane Work Of Rudolf Bauer

http://www.porticony.com/archive/bauer/bauer.html
From "Sturm" to "Geistreich": Rudolf Bauer in Berlin It is certainly no coincidence that the rediscovery of Rudolf Bauer takes place in the 1980's. Unique among his contemporaries, he takes up that ambivalent attitude toward art that comes about when the artist/creator is a critic, even the theoretician, as well.
Was not his ardent discussion with Wassily Kandinsky about a "new" art similar to that of today's post-modern artist, who is creator, theoretician, and critic at the same time, and to whom art stands as a warehouse of quotations and who's arrangement is understood as art about art? When Rudolf Bauer arrived in New York in 1939, there was already an air of anticipation at the Solomom R. Guggenheim Foundation. The appearance of Rudolf Bauer would answer questions about the one who was regarded as the most significant representative of a "non-objective art" and whose lectures were already awaited at Yale and Harvard.
Then the first museum retrospective of Bauer's work opened at the Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts in Vienna in 1985, Bauer was widely unknown, although in the 1970's several galleries in Europe and America had made efforts to resurrect his reputation.
At the time of the retrospective the discrepancy between Bauer's own work as an artist and his eventual life as a museum initiator, collector and theoretician was pointed out time and again.. However, as eventful as Bauer's life was readily described, his horizons were limited. He had only two primary showplaces, namely Berlin and New York, and there were three people who were significant in his artistic career: His early patron, Herwarth Walden, who brought him his avant garde Berlin gallery the "Sturm". Hilla Rebay, his close friend and advocate of many years. And Solomon R. Guggenheim who began to form a collection of abstract art under the influence of Hilla Rebay.

Rudolf Sturm 's father was a businessman. After attending the St Maria Magdalena Gymnasium in Breslau he entered Breslau University in October 1859 to study mathematics and physics. There he was taught by Schroeter who encouraged him to study synthetic geometry. He was awarded a doctorate by Breslau in 1863 for a dissertation entitled De superficiebus tertii ordinis disquisitiones geometricae . In this work he studied third degree surfaces in their projective representations and proved theorems which had been stated, but not proved, by Steiner . After the award of his doctorate he taught at Breslau as an assistant. He continued to work on surfaces and, in 1864, he shared with Cremona the Steiner prize of the Berlin Academy for his investigations of surfaces. In 1866 he became a science teacher in Bromberg, which is the German name for the city now called Bydgoszcz in northern Poland. The year after he took up the post in Bromberg he published

Storm / Sturm Genealogy
The three major Storm/Sturm families in the US: 1) German reformed, 2) German Catholic, and 3) Dutch...
  • Reformed Sturm / Storm family originating with arrival of Johann Jacob Sturm, son of Christian Sturm of Schifferstadt Germany, in Philadelphia on the ship Mortonhouse in 1727. The family moved to the Adams County, PA area by the 1750s, and they are associated with the Brunner family. They subsequently spread out to other areas such as Berkeley, (West) Virginia.
  • Catholic Storm family originating with John Storm (John Sturrum) who most likely arrived around 1750 and also moved to the vicinity of Adams County, PA and Frederick/Carroll County, MD by the late 1700s. There is a distinct possibility that John Storm was the son of Christian Sturm, who was a sole holdout to the Reformed Church. We're still trying to prove it, though.
  • The Dutch based Storm family, which originated with arrival of Dirck Storm. and settled in New York.
The linked material is arranged into the above three groupings with the addition of a fourth group for any Storm whose lineage is not obviously part of the above and an initial group for miscellaneous Storm information. Please note that the material below is a compilation of individuals' postings going back as far as mid-1995. Therefore, the information may not be current and the links and addresses may no longer be valid. I will remove addresses as I discover them to no longer be functional.
